Many very nice sculptures, with each telling a story. Nice pathways and stream through the gardens and forest areas. There is also a bronze sculpture of a bull and bear. Most depict the bull winning.

A lovely park to walk amongst a range of sculptures & garden art. Plenty of open park space for a picnic. A good place relax! The park is free to enter.

On the recommendation of one of her friends SWMBO suggested we visit the sculpture park to see the flower displays. As it was a lovely autumn day (it’s the best time to visit GZ) we prepared to venture forth. Without much further ado I grabbed my newish Pentax K70 camera, clipped on a Sigma 28-300 lens I’d not used for years, and was ready to go. SWMBO took much longer as essentials such as tea, nibbles, umbrellas, spare t-shirts, rain jackets, chopsticks and bowls packed put in the bag.

The Sculpture Park main entrance is only a 20 minute or so walk from our humble abode. The walk is presently rather torturous as the No. 12 Metro line is being built on the way to the park.

There were certainly more people there than on previous visits. The main gate and entrance are a riot of flowers, mainly purple bougainvillea. A little sign inside the gate explains how they were brought from Rio de Janerio by the French explorer Louis Antoine de Bougainvillea. They’re now all over GZ.

The fish pond at the entrance is now home to the bougainvillea display, so my fish food remained in my man-bag. I hope the fish didn’t end-up in somebody’s cooking pot.

SWMBO and I decided on a medium walk which misses out the busts of famous people, so we turned left and walked up the hill past the impressive new toilet block towards the tall red sculpture which I think represents a flower but I could be mistaken, and the four warriors carrying a block of stone with a snake on the top.
Then we headed for the famous people avenue but veered right rather than visiting them. We meandered along the road past another not so new toilet block noting that were still a few McDonald’s stones, and then turned sharp right and down the hill towards the lawn.

More flower displays with a predominance of bougainvillea were on the lawn which was not fenced off, so we took the opportunity to walk on the grass. An activity that’s not encouraged in the park at other times of the year. To enjoy the sunshine I sat down on the grass much to SWMBO’s consternation as she’s sure I’d get some deadly disease.

After a few minutes I was still alive she joined me and was soon engrossed in her social media while I looked around at the antics of the locals posing for photographs, and upwards at the planes departing Canton airport every couple of minutes.

Later in the evening I discovered I’d got slightly sunburnt arms. That’s a first for GZ and proof that the city’s efforts to reduce the pollution are effective.
After twenty minutes or so of basking we made a move and headed towards the main gate past the lake, even more flower displays and a couple of snack stalls.

All in all, a very nice was to spend a lovely afternoon. The air temperature was 38C but a slight cooling breeze made it just right for strolling and sitting.

There are plenty of clean toilets around the park, but I’d wouldn’t been to sure of buying water or nibbles at the park on a normal day. No ID check or entrance fee either.

Yesterday was National Day (Monday, 1st October) and today is the second day of Golden 1 Week, a seven-day public holiday. Traffic on the road outside the apartment is very light with hardly any buses or taxis. If we want to walk it’s got to be local and that means the Sculpture Park.

Outside it’s eerily quiet and miracle of miracles, there’s a clear blue cloudless sky. We hadn’t seen one of them since New Year. SWMBO and I ambled along near deserted streets. All offices and most shops were closed. It’s only as we near the main road by the North (Main) entrance to the park that there was much traffic.

Entrance to the park is free, there’s no ID check or bag searches. You just wander in between the two massive stone pillars that serve as gate posts.

Normally we keep right and walk around the lawn (that’s it’s English name) with its herd of horses, but this time we decided to keep left, walk up a few steps and follow the shaded path up the hill. Rather necessary as the mercury was pushing 38C according to the park’s thermometer.

There’s lots of statues to see on the right. By the bust of the white nurse, a SARS memorial, we turned left where there are many memorials to heroes of GuangZhou. Most of them have plaques with an English inscription. There are dozens of sculptures, both stone and bronze, to browse. In every nook and cranny there’s a work of art.

We stopped occasionally to sit and admire the statues but more importantly rest while eating a chunk of melon which SWMBO produced from her bag, there was also small sponge cakes and tea on the menu.

Eventually the statues stopped but the path carried on, and so did we. Up and down dale meandered the path. We lost count of the McDonald’s ‘I’m lovin’ it’ stones. They’re to tell you that Mai Dang Lao sponsored the planting lots of trees to make the place green. There are flights of steep steps up to various pavilions and viewing platforms, but the weather was not conducive to strenuous excursion. We kept on the main path and when we reached the small East gate we turned right.

We sat and got our breath back. Then it was onwards and what seemed to be ever upwards. SWMBO visited a ‘restroom’ and declared it spotless. There’s not much to see except trees and bushes but the air is clean and fresh. Plenty of benches to sit but no views unless you appreciate tower-blocks or radio/television masts through trees. Eventually the path started to descend, and we found ourselves next to ‘the lawn’ with its herd of horses.

Of course, we stopped so I could feed the fish in the small lake and then it was only a few minutes’ walk back to the main gate. We’ been walking around the park for two hours, plus another thirty minutes for the walk to and from our apartment.
SWMBO didn’t fancy preparing dinner, so we diverted into Chang’s Cuisine for dim sum and hong cha (red tea) on the way back.

The large, well located park covers about 115 acres/ 46 Hectares and, is divided into four sections-- highlighting Guangzhou's and China's history, wonderful statues, sculptures and a forest. It is China's largest "sculpture themed" Park. It also emphatically demonstrates the "synergistic interaction" between "Nature and Art"! There is no entrance fee and the cost of the Metro is about 2-3 Yuan. It is an attraction which will add to one's" more pleasant" and interesting memories of Guangzhou and China!!

I hope that this Review has been helpful.

Visiting the Sculpture Park on a Saturday afternoon was a great decision. Spacious sidewalks, beautiful nature with big trees and flowers, the park shows reveals impressive sculpture arrangements, mostly in Metal or stone. You learn a lot about the state of the art aesthetics, Chinese culture and local heroes. While walking through the park you climb up the hills, get a good exercise and fresh air. The trip can be in between 2-4 hours, depending how fast you walk and how much you interact with the art itself. A great place to escape the noise and rush of the big city.
