Warning, this park has a racist entrance policy where a security guard can pull people out of the stream of people entering the park and demand they hand over private information at will (info including NAME, PASSPORT NUMBER, PHONE NUMBER and ADDRESS). The reason I was given for being the only one single out was because I had 'different color eyes' and 'didn't look Chinese'. I was told this was a park policy. Martyr's Park is a government run public park! What a shameful policy, racism is blooming at Martys' Park Guangzhou.
Needless to say, I don't recommend this place.

To walk around this park was quite an interesting experience. Though most signages are in Chinese, you can still get a sense of why this is historic. Lots to see and if you enjoy being outdoor then this is a nice place to walk around.

SWMBO and I got to this park in which is the 4 Martyrs Cemetery (TA reviewed) and GuangZhou Museum of Modern History (TA reviewed), by taking Metro Line #1 and alighting at the aptly named Martyrs Park. We took exit ‘D’ and found ourselves only a few metres from the big red iron front gates.

The 4 Martyrs Cemetery and The Museum of Modern History were visited before we made out way up the straight pathway flanked by small pine trees and climbed the steps to the impressive skyward pointing main memorial.

This is a popular backdrop for a photo. Having the Pentax around my neck ensured I was approached by a very nice family to use Dad’s phone to take a family snap of them in-front of the memorial, a bit tricky as it’s tall and I didn’t want to cut off their feet or the top of the memorial but by getting down low I managed. Thumbs-up from dad!

To the right of the memorial and up a long flight of steps is the large, grass mound surrounded by a concrete wall which is the Tomb of the Martyrs of GuangZhou Commune. Once again SWMBO stayed well clear, she reckons there’s well over five-thousand martyrs buried under the grass. There’s nothing to see, and after a few photos and I descended the step to meet SWMBO.

We walked back towards the main gate but just before the gate we turned right and took the path in to the part of the park that is next to the Sun Yat-sen University. A nice walk along a winding path, past the men playing Chinese checkers and ending up by the lake where the ‘old folk’ were gathered also playing Chinese checkers.

There’s a long flight of steps leading up to the Tomb of the Martyrs, recognizable by the grass mound and grey surrounding wall. At the bottom of the steps was a short path onto a single-arch bridge which leads to the Blood Sacrificed Pavilion. Very nice I thought until SWMBO informed me the that ‘blood sacrificed’ is a Chinese euphemism for execution. There are pavilions for Russia and North Korea, to remind you that it was an international struggle. In other words, the martyrs were executed in the pavilion and their bodies dragged up the hill and dumped in the tomb.
Nevertheless, its grisly history didn’t deter locals from sitting and chatting there.

We wandered back to the main gate along the winding path, diverting briefly to find that both the Flower Exhibition Hall and Ai Yi Art Museum were closed.

We took the metro one stop to the Peasant Movement Institute and then the #76A bus back to the stop near out apartment.

That was us done for the afternoon. Three in one, not bad!

We visited the park on a Saturday morning and a lot of activity was going on. Locals were taking salsa class, drawing characters, singing in a choir, playing sports... The park was free when we visited it.
