Although many of these statues are in disarray or have been extensively repaired, one still has the feeling of the royal walkway that royal coffins once passed enroute to their tombs. Empress Wu's stele still stands, marking her rule, next to the beheaded (vandalism? art thieves?) stone figures that represent the foreign traders that once marked Xi'an as one of the period's greatest trade cities. Avoid the walkway of shops and head straight onto the main path leading towards the mount (tomb).

This is a huge place with a lot of walking (but then again, where in China you don't have to walk). The place is well organised (for a tomb).

I have seen the location on various TV show regarding Chinese history. I found the long walkway, stone guards, and a fantastic view. I was hoping for more in-depth information. Still, to think of what was at this location....

This was one of my favorite sights my husband took me to in Xian. One of his friends drove us there. It was definitely very interesting, amazing and beautiful!!! I loved the scenery, quiet an the history behind it. It was so peaceful especially when the sun sets at night. We recently went last week and the weather was perfect!

A great many of the statues have been damaged or removed to museums, but you get a good idea of the vastness of the area. A long journey and not one I would revisit.

I am attracted by the story of Wu Zetian that this place has a blank stele for the first empress Lady Wu in China. The stele is about 99 tons. This stele is located at the garden of Qianling Mausoleum. Going here requires about 1.5 hours from the Xi'an City.
The tomb of the empress which is also his husband's is built with wisdom. At this moment, even the main entrance is discovered, it is not possible to go inside.
There are also tombs of some princess that you may walk into it. You will be amazed that the coffin is made by the black colored jade.
I would reccomend this place if you are interested in Chinese history and the lady Wu. Otherwise, I concern if you come here to visit a grave !

I had seen the story of Empress Wu on TV and was interested in visiting her mausoleum, even though I knew that her tomb had not been excavated. I wasn’t disappointed. It took about 2 hours to get there from my Xian city centre hotel by private car; which composed of my myself, guide and driver. The entrance fee 140 Yuan was not included in the tour price. When we arrived it was light rain but despite this, as I got out of the car, turned, looked around and saw a great hill of steps and a tree-lined avenue stretching into the clouded distance. I was getting impressed! As my guide and myself made our way up the steps, she mentioned there was 500 hundred of them to reach the top. Trying not to get too out of breath, I kept stopping and looking around at the spectacular views (getting more impressed!). Luckily the steps were not too steep, so I made it to the top without too much trouble, apart from being a bit wet. As you cross over the last step the Grand Processional Way opens up in front of you (I was jaw droppingly impressed now!!). The Way is lined with large stone sculptures leading to another flight of steps to the main platform displaying Wu’s stele, lines of headless statues, two large entrance towers, stone Lions and other objects. In the background are two large grass covered tombs of Empress Wu and her Emperor husband with small temples atop. You can wander close but cannot enter. I’d say this was a wonderful place to visit, less crowded with awesome views.

The Qianling mausoleums of Emperor Tang Gaozong and Empress Wu Zetain are located on top of Mt Liangshan. The views are great, well worth the walk up the long path up to tombs. If you have time it’s worth visiting the tombs of princess Yongtai, princes Yide and Zhanghuni which are a short drive away 5 - 20mins; however the smaller tombs do not have the views as the Tangs but you can walk down into the tombs and they do have some historical artifacts in the side museums on the sites Note you can buy a combined ticket for 82RMB. Once you visited the tombs then the next day visit history museum in Xian as the wall paintings that adorned the walls are on display in the basement of the museum

This is a must see if you are interested in Chinese history .... especially on Tang Dynasty. This mausoleum was built in 684 AD. It is the joint tomb of the third Tang Emperor Gaozong and his Empress Wu Zetian. The latter later became the first and only female emperor in China and started the second Zhou Dynasty. The Spirit Way walk toward the tomb (a 800 meters mountain to be exact) is lined with stone guardian statues on both side. You also get to see 61 stone statues (most without their heads) of foreign delegates paying their respects to the late Emperor Gaozong. Another interesting feature of the mausoleum is the ‘wordless’ stele built to commemorate the ‘achievements’ of Wu Zetian. The mountain tomb has not been excavated. You can also hike up the mountain. Do be careful when you are nearing the top section as it is pretty steep in some sections and have smooth rocks. You will be rewarded with an excellent view of the villages below although there is nothing much else to see up there. Alternatively, you can ride horses with guides up the mountain (you do not get to the top on these horses though). The tickets to enter Qianling mausoleum complex also allows you to visit other satellite tombs - for example, the excavated tombs of Prince Zhanghuai and Princess Yontai. There, you will be able to see the interesting wall murals, potteries and of course, the stone caskets.
