The goal of the museum is to show you the history of Yon beginning from its prehistoric creation to later times, including the Ching dynasty. I found the prehistory part not that interesting but people tell me that kids love the dinosaurs. However, the Chinese history portion was quite fascinating and included artifacts and bronze styles that I had never seen before. I would highly recommend it.

A decent museum showcasing Yunnan's history, but only 10% of the information has English translations. So only visit if you can read Chinese, or are prepared to translate signage on your phone, or you don't mind forgoing the historical info in favour of the visual aspects of the displays - most of which are worth seeing.

Curiously, part of the natural history section attempts to discredit the global scientific consensus that all people alive today are descended from early humans in Africa. One particular, centrally-displayed sign explicitly dismisses the out-of-Africa paradigm, and instead claims there is greater evidence showing that the evolution of the ancient humans of China from apes transpired entirely within East Asia, separately from other human lineages. This is directly contradicted by another part of the same exhibit, tucked away in a corner, which says that genetic studies by Chinese scientists actually confirm the African origin hypothesis. A muddled narrative!

You have to go.
This is a must-go for those who want to learn about Chinese culture in the context of the history of the Yunnan province. The most interesting parts are on the first floor, whereas the second and third are mostly more science museum- like. Go.

We took a taxi from our hotel near the Kunming train station to the museum. The cost was 40 rmb and took us about 30 min. I was rather concerned that the driver was giving us a run around without realizing I had an old version of the city map showing the former address. Our driver was actually rather experienced and knew exactly where to go. I was relieved when arrived. The entrance was free and no id was required. We needed to go through the security check at the entrance,
The museum was 3 floors and each floor has separate rooms showing the history of Yunnan in a chronological order. There were some English explanations but the details were in Chinese only. The museum has an excellent representations of bronze ware jade, silver, embroidery...etc. The museum is not overwhelmingly huge and is very manageable to go through each room. Time spent could be a couple of hours to half a day. It is well worth a visit even though it is somewhat far away especially having to deal with the congested traffic.

The YPM has moved to the outskirts of the city but do not let that put you off this amazing new museum. The old Museum was in Guangfu Rd but the new museum has only just opened.

What you get are three floors of purpose built interactive displays. The ground floor holds a temporary gallery and then the history of the Long March with some fascinating artefacts. Go upstairs to the first floor to early cultures of Yunnan be prepared be astonished. The bronze work is incredible, delicate drums, stunning swords and a variety of crafts. Galleries of daily life, art, textiles and early history build into a comprehensive experience....it really is excellent.

Do take the audio tour as there is only limited amount of english translation.

This is also a free experience and enjoy every minute...

Well, for a start, tripadvisor continues to show a wrong picture -- since 2015 the museum is in magnificent, purpose built, new premises. You can easily spend a whole day in this place -- every floor is well done, but the third floor is particularly good, especially the section covering the post-1900 period.
Purchasing souvenirs from here creates problems even for the locals -- effectively cash only.

This museum is newly built (I think that’s why it is not good rated yet), the collection is interesting and amazing, the decoration is very modern. A place worth visit for sure

one thing this museum needs improve is add more English description

If you are visiting Kunming in south Western China, a visit to the Yunnan Provincial Museum is a must. Its a newly built complex south of the city centre, and is easily reached by the very efficient Kunming Rail Transit train network, less than 20 minutes from the city.
The museum itself is stunning with an incredible range of fascinating exhibits tracing the history of Yunnan right through to incredible dinosaur displays, highlighting the jurassic past of Yunnan. There's a very special Kids section focussed on dinosaurs and archaeology, if you have kids from primary age right through to teens, this part of the museum is something you should not miss.
It's a full day out to cover the thousands of exhibits, and there's great for available at the museums restaurants.
The museum building is itself a great attraction, fine modern Chinese architecture at its best.
