Mount Moiwa is a small, forested mountain lookout, about 5km southwest of the centre of Sapporo. It is accessible by a ropeway from the base of the mountain which goes about ¾ of the way up where you then switch to a small cable car which takes you to the summit. It runs between 10:30am and 10:00pm, with the roundtrip for the ropeway at ¥1,400 and ¥700 for the cable car roundtrip. There is an open observation deck, restaurant, shop and restrooms at the summit, toilets and a small gallery at the transfer station, and toilets at the base.

The lookout at the summit can get quite popular, because of the spectacular views from the summit, particularly after sunset, when the city lights up. We went in the afternoon during summer, so we avoided the queues that you experience at peak times. It is worth the visit to get a great perspective of where you are.

Such a fun time! Sapporo was great. Such great food. We went for the Sapporo Snow Festival in 2024 and it was fantastic. While you’re there definitely try Miso Ramen and Curry Soup from Suage+ Honten. The Sapporo Beer Museum and Genghis Khan in the food hall there was delicious and such a fun experience. Will definitely go back to check out what Sapporo has to offer during the summer months. It was an easy trip via ANA airlines from Haneda airport from Tokyo.

We had blue skies for our cable ride to the top of Mt Moiwa. There was plenty of snow for us to frolick in. The view over Sapporo was amazing, a definite winter wonderland. We sat inside the cafe with a hot drink & soaked in the atmosphere of the snow & scenery outside. An awesome time had in the snow. We rang the summi bell.

We went up around 3 pm so our children could play in the snow before it got dark at 4-4.30. Bought a plastic sledge in DCM for about 2000 yen. Came back about 5. So we got the views in the daytime and in the dark. No complaints about the views or the area for kids to slide and build a snowman. But the restaurant was closed - we'd brought our own food anyway, but that may have disappointed some visitors. There was a kind of snack bar at the entrance to the restaurant with the menu in Japanese only. Another surprise was that the shuttle bus from the tram stop doesn't start running until about 5 on weekdays, and it's a stiff walk up the hill for older people. Maybe different in peak season, but this was early December, which meant plenty of room in the ropeway and no long waiting times. More people going up after dark though - that's maybe the most popular time on weekdays after working hours. So, if you can, I'd recommend going on a weekday in the daytime in off-season. If you don't mind the stiff walk (or you could take a taxi), you may almost have the ropeway car to yourselves!

The view of a city from the top of a nearby mountain is always very beautiful and is completely different from the view from the top of a tower or building: from the top of the mountain the view is panoramic, you can see the entire city from the same point. The view of Sapporo from the top of Mount Moiwa is really beautiful. It's interesting to go up about 30 minutes before sunset because that way we can see the transition until it gets dark and the lights illuminate the city.
It is considered one of the most beautiful night views in Japan, along with Nagasaki and Hakodate.
It's worth the visit.

It's close to the city center, and although it was crowded, it's an easy spot to drop by.
The beautiful night view spreads out before you, and even paying 2,100 yen per person isn't too expensive.
It's about 7 stops by tram from the city center, so access isn't bad and I was able to get there smoothly even for my first time. It was great.

This was my first visit to Mt. Moiwa in decades. The ropeway goes only up to the middle of the mountain, and then there's a mini cable car that goes from there to the summit (I think in the past you could only easily go up to the middle of the mountain).
From the summit, you can see all the way to Ishikari Bay to the north, and I realized that the sea is surprisingly close. To the south spreads out Minami-ku, which continues to Jozankei, and the former stone quarry also comes into view.
Photos from the left, from the ground. Looking south from the summit. A warning sign for bears posted on the mountain path from the summit. We went a little way and then turned back, but the climbers were carrying bells and radios to protect themselves.
It was a little early for the autumn leaves, so we enjoyed the changing autumn colors.

It is located about 20 minutes from Sapporo Station. You can also take the city tram to the ropeway entrance.

It takes about 70 minutes to reach the summit, so I recommend climbing the mountain. It is Japan's first natural monument and is also one of Japan's New Three Great Night Views.

If you do climb the mountain, the trail can become slippery due to the increase in climbers, so it's a good idea to bring trekking boots and trekking poles.
There is also a parking lot at the trailhead.
If you are traveling to Hokkaido, bringing trekking boots if possible will allow you to enjoy the outdoors even more.

Getting out here on public transport was ok but took us a few connections and therefore took a while, but it was totally worth it. We headed up after dark and got to see the lights of the city which is pretty picturesque. There are also a few places on the observation deck to take photos. The ropeway and fenicular are fairly quick to get you to the top, but run at set intervals so they can be a queue, particaurly at night coming back down. When we arrived the queue was approx an hour to go back down and we probably only spent about 15 minutes at the top. Thankfully things had cleared somewhat by then.
May not be the easiest place to get to by public transport but very doable and definitely worth going up for some really lovely views of the city. It got a thumbs up from my teenage daughter as well.

晩秋の日中に来ました。ロープウェイの営業時間を確認せずに来てしまったため、少し時間を潰す必要がありました(^^;
