A pretty garden, a collection of Victorian houses, and a fantastic view over Nagasaki dockyard. Historically interesting, but not really worth a visit for Westerners, though fascinating for the Japanese.

As a 'seventy-something' solo traveller, I would recommend any 'Senior' intending to see Glover Garden to take the tram to the terminus of Line 5 at Ishibashi; it's only a short walk from there (150m) to the Glover Sky Road where you can ride the funicular/elevator to the upper entrance/exit (Gate 2) of Glover Garden. Once in the Garden itself, it's much more of a gentle downhill stroll to take in the various properties on your way down to the lower exit near Oura Cathedral.
I must say that the Glover Garden far exceeded my initial expectations and I can see why it is so highly rated (No. 3) on Trip Advisor. There are a total of 9 'Nationally Designated Important Cultural Properties' in the Garden; 3 of which were originally located here (Former Ringer House, Former Alt House and Former Glover House) and the remaining 6 of which having been relocated here from other parts of Nagasaki. I spent over 3-hours admiring the tastefully renovated buildings and their contents, and only moved on as began to tire.

It was a wonderful view. The park is also thoroughly cleaned.
I could see the achievements of Glover and his son well, but if the information on the exhibition was not more appealing, I would overlook it.
There are lots of plants, but there is no name.
No staff outside.
There are few information boards, it is difficult to understand the route, the handwriting on the information board I finally found is small.
It is likely to be buried if there are no easy-to-understand guidance schemes for middle-aged and older people and school excursion students.

This is less of a traditional "garden" but more of an outdoors museum with a view. The complex contains several relocated buildings from 19th century when the city was undergoing rapid industrialization. Most of them are like little museums you can enter (if they are not undergoing renovation works). Homes of several western businessman who contributed heavily to the city's modernization can be found here, including Mr Glover's. Due to discrimination laws, Mr Glover and other foreigners were not allowed to live in the city center, but in this outskirt of the city. Interestingly, that's likely also the reason why these buildings survived the atomic bomb.
The complex is very beautiful and well maintained. The location gives you an outstanding view to city center and its harbor. Nagasaki is a beautiful city and this is probably the most beautiful corner a tourist would go. As a bonus, you get to visit a museum about Nagasaki Kunchi, a major local festival on your way out. Not a place to be missed while you are in Nagasaki (unless it's raining).

It has been open since 8 a.m. Oura Cathedral is also open from 8:30. So we were able to see Glover Garden and Oura Cathedral before the morning tour of Gunkanjima Concierge (very close by). However, both parties can only take about an hour and a half at most, so it is a rush. Glover Garden has a great view of the harbour from above as well as the buildings and gardens. It was just a large cruise ship docked and I could see it clearly.
The large black equipment, which was installed here and there for projection mapping, spoiled the landscape.

Nagasaki is a must-see attraction of Nagasaki... It's also nice to take a look at Nagasaki's opening history, but it's especially nice to see Nagasaki's city, the sea and the mountains... Instead of climbing the climb to the Oura Temple, we recommend the course going down to the Oura Temple after entering the back door via the Globe Sky Road Elevator.

It is located on a mountain slope facing Nagasaki Port.
There are two entrances: the first gate near Oura Cathedral on the lower side of the slope and the second gate on the upper side of the slope.
Once you enter through the first gate, you will need to go up from the bottom to go around the park.
There are moving walkways (escalators), but climbing the stairs is hard.
The second gate is easily accessed using the Glover Sky Road, so it is Recommendation to enter from there.
The admission fee is 620 yen, but 100 yen discount is available when you show your ion card.
Once you enter the gate, you will first find a building called the former Mitsubishi No. 2 Dockhouse.
There is a souvenir shop on the first floor, and we took a short break to soak up the air conditioning in the extremely hot summer.
This is the meeting point for tours of the park.
Name in the registration book and wait for the start time.
A history Guide will show you around the park. It is free.
First, we will climb to the second floor to see the park and Nagasaki city center.
He lamented the reclamation of Dejima as a misgovernment of the city.
From here, you go down the stairs and go around the park.
The main stops are the former Walker House, the former Ringer House and finally the former Glover House.
The former Olt House was under repair and could not be visited.
The former Ringer House featured cutlery from Ringer’s Nagasaki Hotel, which was discovered during renovation work at the Nara Hotel.
Mr. Glover is the creator of Kirin Beer.
From the observation deck, I could see the Diamond Princess majestically anchored in Nagasaki Port.
Before leaving the exit, we stopped by the Nagasaki Traditional Performing Arts Center to watch a video about Nagasaki-kunchi.

The Orto House was currently under construction. The famous circular parterre, possibly due to the heat, was being replaced.
It was cool inside Glover's house, and I could see the photos and scenery slowly inside the garden.

This is a place where you can learn a lot about the history of Japan at that time. The flowers in the gardens and greenhouses are well-maintained and worth a visit. Because it is on high ground, the view of the harbor below is beautiful. However, there are quite a few slopes that were not visible on the map. There were some escalators, but there were also many steep stairs, so I think it would be a bit difficult for elderly people and people with disabilities.

We saw some amazing gardens while we were in Japan (Adachi Museum and Nanrakuen Garden) and while this is a nice location, it wasn't as impressive. The topography of the location (Mr. Glover's home) isn't conducive to the large, beautifully arranged Japanese gardens we saw, but it is more reflective of gardens he was familiar with in Scotland and England. Being able to go through his home was very interesting, especially in light of the role he played behind the scenes in local politics. I wouldn't highly recommend this attraction, but if you're already in the area, it is worth an hour of your time.

Hi,
What is the recommended length of visit?
Thanks
Andrea
Skrevet 7. desember 2016
Hiya, we were there approx 2hrs but really could've happily stayed longer. We were only in Nagasaki for the day (cruise) and spent longer than we anticipated at the Peace Garden & museum area on the opposite side of the city. Only regret was only having the single day there though, Glover Gardens are lovely and Ground Zero area truly awesome. Enjoy.

Is it far from the cruise terminal? Also it possible go there without booking a tour?
Skrevet 26. mars 2016
Yes to both . Definitely you don't need a tour guide . It's not too far away from the cruise terminal. Grab a taxi and you should be there within 15 minutes . When you are done with it and if the weather permits, you can consider walking back to the cruise terminal .
