During the Edo period, it was an island and today it is in a town. It is easily accessible because it is in the town. It's not that big, so you walk around the island. There are cafes and restaurants nearby, so there is no trouble eating.

It's right downtown, and right off the main tram line, so quite convenient to visit.

As another reviewer noted, the entrance is not obvious if you are getting off the tram at the Dejima station. After getting off the tram, you have to cross the bridge over the river, then turn right and walk along the north bank of the river to a pedestrian bridge which will take you into Dejima. The walk there gives some good photo opportunities for overall views of Dejima.

This collection of restored buildings gives an excellent overview of why and how Nagasaki became so influential in trade with European countries. You do have to have an interest in history to really enjoy this, although the architecture of the buildings, and the interior of the buildings with their simulations of what they likely looked like the 1600s to 1800s, is interesting in itself.

Other reviewers have given much more detailed overviews of the historical background and significance. The price is certainly right, so - if you have the time, and like history, have a look.

July visit, it was the end of the rainy season of light rain.
It was a short stay (1.5 hours) compared to the last visit, and it was a great opportunity to fully enjoy the exhibition, as it was full of historical Dejima artifacts learned from the textbooks.
The local cider also had a gentle taste that left it heavy.

Dejima (exit Island in Japanese) is a small curved island built offshore that served as a colony which was set up to keep the Dutch isolated from the local Japanese. During the long period of isolation (1641 -1859) Nagasaki was the only port open for foreign businessmen and traders. About 15,000 sq. meters in area, Dejima was surrounded by 10 foot high earthen wall. The Dutch resided here for two centuries but enjoyed European cuisines in western style residences, with floors covered in tatami mats, had servants from Batavia (Java) and were attended by courtesans from the flower quarter of the city. The Dutch were required to pay tribute to the emperor once a year by travelling to Tokyo. It would take 90 days for the round trip. This trip to Edo (previous name for Tokyo) was conducted annually from 1633; to meet Tokugawa Shogun to express their thanks for the trade privileges. One year earlier in their stay four Dutch emissaries not knowing the local customs and practices of the time encountered a local Shogun leader. Instead of getting off their horses and laying prostate on the ground to show respect, they stayed on their steeds. Three had their heads cut off and the fourth sent back to Dejima. One of the recreated room with a desk, which was rebuilt from old illustrations, was used for daily administrative duties. In the room a clock which was fitted with a music box, with its packing case on the floor, on the table shows the tribute gift which the chief factor presented to the Tokugawa Shogunate. The main items imported by the Dutch from Japan was raw silk, copper, camphor, ceramics and lacquer ware. While they exported cotton fabrics, velvet, pepper, sugar, glassware etc.
Later in their history after the end of national isolation (1641 – 1859) the Shoguns realised that to trade with the world would be beneficial to their country and the western technologies would assist them to progress their own society. Dejima served as a gateway for the introduction and spread of western knowledge and culture in to Japan.

Best thing about this historical site was the gift shop, especially the cards and magnets. Most of the buildings are closed and we had to rush through the ones that were open because our tour groups was off schedule due to traffic. It is impressive to imagine the Dutch traders being willingly restricted to this tiny space just so that they could trade with the Japanese.

Very nice to see the history of this former Dutch trading post. Very special because Dejima was the only place where foreigners (Dutch) were allowed to trade in Japan. The trading post has been completely rebuilt and you feel like you have gone back hundreds of years. Very nice to visit.

Built in 1634, this artificial island was to allow Portuguese and Dutch traders who were not allowed to access the city to still exchange or sell their goods, without Christianity being able to spread in the country. The buildings have been restored and the island takes us back to the atmosphere of the time.

Very interesting place to visit to learn about the history of Nagasaki and the western influence with a mix of Japanese and western style buildings. It is necessary to understand the background of Nagasaki and the Christian influence. The entry was only around $5 each, so not a huge impost. We enjoyed looking at the local school kids all dressed up. It takes about an hour to wander through at a leisurely pace. The gift shop is also filled with local items. Remember to climb up to the 2nd story of one of the buildings and take some photos of the street below. We got off the streetcar at the Dejima stop and then had to walk a fair way and try and work out how to get in as the nearest entry was closed. You have to walk over the river, walk a bit and then walk over another moat bridge to get in. There is a lovely little gift shop outside Irohaya Dejima which sells local goods and not as crowded.

A train runs nearby, but the entrance is across the bridge along the river.
Unfortunately it was raining, but there were quite a few tourists there.
The recreated buildings are wonderful, and the exhibits inside are also substantial. The mini Dejima was bigger than I expected and well worth seeing.
There are free guided tours available.

If you go down the river from near Meganebashi Bridge, you will arrive at Dejima. Depending on the direction you are coming from, the entrance may be a little difficult to find. Looking at the restored buildings and streetscape, it reminded me of Kyoto Uzumasa Movie Village. It looks like a movie set. However, unlike a set, not only the exterior but also the inside of the buildings have been carefully restored. There are easy-to-understand explanations along with the exhibits. It was very educational.
