There was so much more at the National Museum of Fine Arts than we could ever hope to conquer in a couple of hours, especially when that time is at the end of a day where sightseeing began at 8am! Loved the work of Vicente Silva Manansala and Carlos V. Francisco, particularly the latter’s gigantic ‘History of Manila’. Sat and drank that one in for ages from many angles.
If we could’ve replanned our visit, it would not have been after a big day of sightseeing (although it is also a lovely place to escape the afternoon heat).

this is the first time that i get to visit this museum again after more than 30 years. we frequent this place when i was in grade school as part of our yearly educational trips.

a lot of things have changed since then. for one, our national museum has expanded and housed a lot of other materials that were not present three decades prior. it has separate provisions now - one each for fine arts and for natural history. a full day is not enough to roam the place.

for a minimal fee, one can enjoy a guided tour of the place. be sure your cameras have full batteries and enough memory storage.

Incredible museum, both its organization by rooms and the painting of the walls so that the works stand out, as well as the building itself, which is beautiful.
Paintings, sculptures, wood carvings, both religious and sacred art, the mural on the second floor telling the history of the Philippines and the latest modern works, a must see, free entry.
The history of the Philippines told with art.

This museum is filled with artwork that does a good job illustrating the history of the Philippines. The exhibits are very informative and is worth your time to go see. Manila traffic is predictably heavy, so make sure you budget time for the commute accordingly. But you will be pleased with what you see at the National Museum.

I went to the museum on a Sunday. I took the public transport and got down on TM Kalaw because I wanted to pass by the Rizal monument first before heading to the museums. This is a great first stop.

It was quite a walk from Luneta Park to the museums. The part of Luneta that was supposed to be the short route in between the buildings is being renovated so you must go around the block to get from one building to another.

My first stop was the Museum of Natural History. This building is a great stop for those visiting with kids. They will enjoy the exhibits here. This is the most modern of the three buildings.

My second stop was the Fine Arts Museum. I have been to this building many times and most of the pieces on display remain the same except for the contemporary exhibits. But the Spoliarium in all its majesty never fails to leave me in awe.

My third and final stop was the Antropology building where artifacts and the culture of the Philippine heritage is displayed. I have also been here many times and the exhibits were much more extensive than what I saw during my last visit.

I can say that the buildings per se, the facilities, and the quality of the exhibits have drastically improved from my past visits. I was so happy to see this positive change.

I hope that admission is FREE, will encourage more people to come and learn about our rich culture.

Tips:
1. If you don’t want to walk, you can ride a tricycle for a fee. I preferred to walk so I was not able to get the tricycle fees.
2. If you prefer to walk, it can get quite hot so bring an umbrella. If you forgot your umbrella, there are street vendors selling foldable umbrellas for Php100-Php150.00 each.
3. The nearest eating places are in TM Kalaw or in SM Manila. If you want to go further, you can have lunch in Binondo (Chinatown). If you get too hungry, there are street food stalls right at the entrance of each building.
4. Food and drink are not allowed inside the museum. There are baggage counters at the entrance of each building where you can leave your things for safekeeping.
5. Small handbags are allowed inside the museums.
6. You need to present your ID at the registration counter. If you are coming in a group, only one person needs to queue.
7. I did not pay any entrance fees.
8. To appreciate the exhibits more, you can book a guided tour online in the NM website.
9. All of the three buildings are airconditioned.
10. To me, here is the ideal building route – Fine Arts – Anthropology – Natural History

I learnt a lot about the history of the Philippines and saw the evolution of painting in the country from early days through to contemporary. A number of specialist exhibits of artists and a wonderful new exhibit about Magellan’s voyages. The building itself is of historical interest and it was a good introduction to the culture, history. There is considerable pride expressed about the exhibits and while some of the art is hard to understand in the absence of detailed knowledge it was a great overview of the experiences the country has gone through.
