Today, we're visiting the beautiful McKee Covered Bridge, a little gem of Applegate Americana, and close to where I live, and one I've been to dozens of times. It has just snowed overnight, and was a beautiful day so I drove up and hoped for some nice pictures.
Nothing has changed much here in well over 100 years. A beautiful spot where if feels like time might just be standing still, and one of the reasons is, it's the oldest covered bridge to stand continuously at its original location, unlike most surviving covered bridges which have been moved to other locations.
Built in 1917 in Upper Applegate Valley, over Applegate River and just eight miles from the California border, it was in use until 1956. It's named for Aldelbert "Deb" McKee who donated the land on which it was built.
Oregon's second oldest covered bridge, and one of the longest at 122 feet, as well as the highest at 45 feet. Built with a Howe truss design, flying buttresses, open day lighting windows at the roof-line, with a shingle roof.
Built to bypass an 1876 wagon road. A discovery of gold caused a new north-south route to be developed. It was used as a rest stop due to it being located halfway between Jacksonville and the Blue Ledge Cooper Mine who used it until 1919.
At the west end of the bridge is McKee Picnic Grounds, built in 1933. Beautiful spot with stone built BBQ's, and an interesting picnic shelter that includes a huge fireplace built with river rock.
I noticed 2 pianos underneath the picnic covering (not sure what they're for, see pics). They probably wont last long out in the weather.

We drove here to have a tailgate picnic. It has an adjacent park but only one shelter with a picnic table. Anyway it was packed because it was Father's Day Sunday but we still got a parking space in the shade right next to the bridge. We could hear kids in the Applegate river/creek swimming, the bridge was in lovely shape with cut outs for views of the Applegate. Just a lovely hour spent picnicking and a slow walk over the bridge and back. The drive there through rolling country was beautiful and relaxing. Afterward we drove to the town of Jacksonville. walked along it's small streets and 150 year old buildings, had an ice cream cone, walked thru the park and ended the lovely day. It was 90 degrees out but felt 10 degrees cooler in the shade.

Drove out from Medford to check out this covered bridge to add it to our list of visited Oregon covered bridges--and my paternal grandmother was a McKee--tho no connection to this local resident that I could fine. Bridge is larger that most, and solidly built in 1917. It no longer allows drive-thru traffic. I like that the renovators added what they call 'graffiti boards' throughout the interior of the bridge, and ask that the usual graffiti be written on those boards. Surprisingly, it looks like those individuals have done so! There is a nice picnic ground at the bridge to sit and enjoy a picnic or BBQ, and a path along the Applegate River if that is your thing as well.
