The Texas Air And Space Museum is located at The Amarillo Airport. We were lucky to arrive just as one of the persons there was starting a guided tour. There was an old DC 3 that you could go inside, a couple of Vietnam era troop carriers, a helicopter and a jet airplane that some of the NASA astronauts used to train for dead stick landings for the space shuttle. The guide was very good and explained everything very well.

This museum has a wide range of aircraft expanding several decades of engineering and very interesting history. Visiting this place helped us expand our knowledge on aviation, important events and people who made a positive impact in the manufacturing, use and improvements in the aviation world. This museum is free, but donations are always welcome to help them achieve the goal to move to their new planned locations nearby. For those willing to make a generous donation, they are a 501 C3 nonprofit and they are tax deductible.

We stopped in on a Thursday afternoon and happened to get Ken Hanson as our docent. What a treasure to the museum this man is!! Ken provided lots of background information on the planes and various items of equipment. He was friendly, funny, and chock full of anecdotes and real life info. The museum is crushed for space at the moment but we hope they can get bigger facilities soon in order to showcase their wonderful collection. Go there on Tuesday or Thursday from 12 to 4 and ask for Ken.

Fabulous museum. Looks are deceiving- there is so much stuff in this smaller space. Ron was our tour guide and he was so knowledgeable and fun. He took several awesome family photos for us and took the time to show us everything. Our kids (13, 9, and 5) LOVED IT. Great for families.

If you're into air and space craft, and you like history, this is the place for you. It's rather small, but they fill it with as much as possible. You're greeted by a vet who tells you right off the bat - We're going to get you into as many planes as possible. You can actually sit in and enter most of the aircraft there. Your host takes you outside and gives you some history on the planes out there. It was wondering speaking with him and hearing his stories and those of others who served our country. We will definitely tell our friends and family to stop by if they're in Amarillo.

Really enjoyed our time here, which was capped off by a one on one tour that included tons of information about the planes, a photo shoot and some great life advice-wish we had gotten our guide’s name, he was fantastic! Definitely recommend a stop here if you’re in Amarillo-they have some really interesting aircrafts, memorabilia, etc. Everyone there was super friendly and informative. They mentioned they will be expanding over the next few years so we’ll definitely have to plan a follow up visit.

Though i am not american, i felt the need to learn more about human history, so me and my fiance (from Europe) visited this museum. There are several reliquias, aeroplanes you can go inside, sit where pilots used to, listen very interesting stories. The gentleman (with very bright blue eyes) is the key of your visit, the tour guide, he knows so much and has a huge knowladge. It was a pleasure to listen him. This place is running by local valentiers, we apprichiate their work a lot!

If you're expecting something like Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, then you'll be disappointed. But if you want a smaller collection of vintage aircraft, most with stories behind them, then the Texas Air & Space Museum is for you. The volunteers are wonderful, showing you around and providing you with history of each craft. My guide even showed me all of the wires and cables used to control the tail rudder and rear flaps in the DC-3. You can actually go in a few of the planes, sit in the cockpits and see what pilots would feel. My favorite was the DC-3, an old tail-dragger. All of the dials, gauges and levers in the cockpit impress upon you how difficult this old bird was to fly. There's also a C-7A Caribou cargo plane that was used to ferry paratroopers during the Vietnam War. It even carried a lot of pigs to a starving village. It even still has the cable that the parachutists attached their ripcords to as they baled out of the plane. The model room, which has models of many historic planes, also is really neat. The skill and the detail put into each plane is amazing.

We have been too many air and space museums, and this was probably the most disappointing. Luckily, it is free to visit and the volunteers are very nice. There just isn’t much of anything to see. The most interesting part was seeing the NASA training aircraft.
