In spite of the cold weather my daughter and I had a great experience. The grounds and artwork are beautiful. We also enjoyed learning the history behind the house and grounds.

Laguna Gloria is a beautiful, peaceful setting for this sculpture garden. Because it is 'contemporary' it is more than just dusty old sculptures of dead people. Even if you don't think of yourself as an art lover, it is fun to look at the sculpture, marvel at the creativity and ponder what the artist wants you to see and think. It is easy to appreciate the grounds that are filled with nicely-tended native plants and provide shore level views of Lake Austin.
Hours are limited but admission is free on certain days. It is outdoors with lots of shade, but the best time to visit is when the weather is pleasant.
Consider combining your visit with a stop at adjacent Mayfield Park and explore the trails and gardens (and peacocks!!!) of this city park. Accessing all of Mayfield or the Contemporary will be difficult if you are mobility-impaired.

This is an outdoor modern art sculpture garden. The grounds and lake were beautiful and it was fun walking around and finding the different sculptures, often hidden in the trees, and the villa is beautiful. There was a couple getting (engagement?) photos around the villa and it looked like the perfect spot for something like that. Warning: it was HOT on a June day even though we tried to stay in the shade. The grounds are beautiful but I think you have to really be into modern art to appreciate most of the sculptures here. A few of them looked rather gruesome, like people with melted faces, and others just looked like junk. Shrug. We ended up skipping a few sculptures to return to the car and air conditioning.

Open air art at your own pace. Some stairs and overgrown paths. Watch for ivy.
Grounds in natural setting so the pieces are tucked in and around. Fun for the kids to use the map.

Since we can't shop and drink all day, we thought we ought take in a little of art and culture in Austin. On a good sunny day in winter, Laguna Gloria makes a for a pleasant stroll in the woods along the Colorado river. You'll see modern contemporary works of art...some fascinating, weird, some questionable...all of which can be really good...or really bad in some cases. Can't explain it, just look at the pictures. Overall not a bad way to spend $10 and 60-75 minutes, if its not over 90 degrees during the hot Texas summer.

Do yourself a favor and allow a couple of hours to visit this beautiful museum. Wander the lovely grounds to find works of contemporary sculpture by some of the best artists working today, in all styles. Visit the Mediterranean villa as well. Great but small gift shop. A must see!

Laguna Gloria is a nice place in Austin. The main feature is this large 35’ statue which looks like it is made from crumpled aluminium. The title is “man looking up to sky”. It projects many feelings such as Curiosity, awe, inspiration etc. There is a new (or under renovation) museum. There are a few other smaller statues. And a garden going down to a lake..

lovely place to walk an appreciate the green colors of Austin. Excellent for pictures. All the installations had the correct descriptions and info. Just one of the pieces wasn’t complete. The staff at the front desk wasn’t so cheerful at the beginning but at the end He was kind and friendly. At the restroom area they have lockers to keep your things and make easier your walk. The restrooms were clean and there is water fountains to refill your bottles.
