Drove up to the top, and hiked to the Summit via the Slot Trail. Then visited the western peak where hang gliders can take off. Good trails, great views. Modest fee, but our entrance was covered by Wilgus State Park. As warned on brochure, our brakes overheated on the way down. Need to use even lower gear next time. Spot a pot on parking lot.

This was spectacular! On this perfect October afternoon few things could outdo this. Though the colors were not quite peak, the splash of color was incredible. The drive to the top was nothing short of postcard perfect. There is a viewing overlook part of the way up allowing for a panoramic view of the valley. Once at the top, the view is even more breathtaking. We decided to hike the .7 miles to the summit, though stopped at the observation deck, .1 miles short of the summit. The view from here is 360 degrees and the distance is nearly mind boggling. It was definitely worth the effort. The hike is magnificent taking you through huge rock formations some covered in moss as well as beautiful forests, bushes and flowers. This is a moderate level hike and like any hike you should go prepared. Remember, descending yields to ascending!!

We rode our tandem MTB with friends. If you do not have good technical experience you'll be doing allot of Hike-a-bike.

We went up the futures trail and started 1/2 way up ...very rocky but terrific views
The fire tower at the top was excellent and we could see all of Vermont from the viewpoint

$4.00 per person admission fee paid at the base of the mountain. Drive to the top of the mountain is a steep 3.6 miles with one scenic turn-off. Appeared to be ample parking at the end of the road. The hike to the look out tower/summit is a moderate .7 miles. I was able to do the climb in my crocs (which is certainly not recommended). The trail passes through lovely groves of hemlock trees and the view from the top of the tower is really terrific. We opted for the "Slab" route as the guide indicated it was a slightly easier route to the summit. A lovely way to spend a cool August morning!

This is a very old campground, sites 1-18 were built by the CCC. Sites 19-38 and the lean-tos are newer. Cabins are in the works. Each section has a bathhouse with sinks, stalls and a shower. Shower costs quarters. Sites are raked after checkout and each has a table, fire pit or place and a chopping log. Firewood and ice at the entrance for a fee. Water spigots in various spots. Extra parking, trash, and RV station are available.
NOTE: If you have a large camper or extra people, call before reserving online. Many sites are tent only, small or have tight spots. Some sites in the old section are really close to the road.
Highway and road noise can be problematic. Roads are not wide and/or one way. Restrooms are antiquated but adequate.

Hiked 2.7m trail up Ascutney Mtn today after a couple days of rain in May. What a great decision! The waterfalls were beautiful and Cascade Falls in particular was amazing. On the far side of the waterfall, we decided to go "rogue" and hike the steep non-path down to the bottom of the falls. It was well worth the effort and got some beautiful pics of the rushing sun filled water falling.

At the top of Ascutney we did the fire tower, summit, Brownsville rock, & west summit where we were "buzzed" by some large white gliders that were really cool. Also, on Memorial Day wkd the ATA hosts an annual picnic at the summit, which we were fortunate to come upon. Talked with some people & learned some history of the founding Trail Blazers, like Gus Aldrich.

It was a great hike, and would recommend this trail to anyone in the spring when the water is flowing!

I recommend driving 3/4 of the way up the mountain and then taking the mile hike to the observation tower from there. The views, from the top, are beautiful and there are a lot of great spots to picnic and enjoy the views.
