Gone - history is a victim of cancel culture
jul. 2020
Those who do not remember the past are doomed to repeat its mistakes. Alexandria was a pivotal location during the Civil War, for both armies, but no one cares about actual history anymore. Was a poignant reminder of the human toll of war and how it deeply touched and divided our town... it was a daily reminder that families living in the beautiful old houses we see today suffered and may have lost family members in the Civil War.

It's gone.
sep. 2020
Bowing to the tide of the times, the Appomattox Statue was taken down on June 2, 2020. It was a traffic hazard which devolved into a historical embarrassment.

A piece of confederacy that still stands
mar. 2019 • Alene
At the currnet public outcry of ridding of statues related to Confederacy and Cilvil, the Appomattox Statue withstands all the pressure to be removed from the original site (1889) because of a support and constitutional technicality. The Statue is located in the middle of S. Washington and Prince in the heart of Old Town Alexandria and was dedicated to commemorate the loss of life of Alexandria citizen during the Civil War. The Statue does not represent a specific person but an appearance of Southern Soldier. Worth to stop by to take photo of a piece of history when in the area.

Outdoor statue which has some controversy around it
feb. 2019 • Alene
Passing by here many times since first moving here in 2009. There has been some controversy about this statute saying that it should be moved because of it glorifying the Confederate forces. However if you look more closely you will notice that this soldier is unarmed with his head held looking down. Also the monument was put at this site because it is the same spot where the actual troops did meet to march out of town before Alexandria was captured by the North.

Wonderful old statue

You can’t really get to close with all the traffic but wow! The plaque on the corner of Prince and S Washington explains the meaning of the statue very well.

Appomattox Statue, affectionately known as APPY
mai 2018 • Venner
this statue has stood looking South, for many, many years! LEAVE IT WHERE IT IS. I grew up in awe of this statue, many times placed flowers there as a child, when it had an iron fence and grass around it, and my gr-gr-uncle's name is on it. It does not stand for slavery, nor any racism, nothing against anyone of any color, nationality, race, etc.

It stands as a solemn symbol of everyone who fought in the war, gave their lives for what they believed and is protected by law. It doesnt need to be moved any place else.

As many have said, it is "thought provoking", Appy stands looking South, remembering and guarding all those who have passed his way. This is his home, his city, and should remain in his original spot watching the new world pass by, and hoping everything was not in vain......

Impressive Statue
mai 2018 • Par
This bronze statue stands at the Junction of two main streets in Alexandria and shows a Confederate soldier. Erected in 1899 by Robert E. Lee camp veterans and relating to the time when Lee finally surrendered to the Union General Ulysses S. Grant. It is not for me to make any comment regarding the present controversy over this and similar statues, but it is a fact that this has been very well sculpted.

Not amazing statue but thought provoking, and a good reminder of where we were.. Out in the middle of a busy street when I was there. so can't really contemplate; that in itself says maybe put it in a park.

The Cost of War.
nov. 2017 • Par
At one time, this statue was in a large traffic island, but not now. The statue honors Alexandria vets who died during the Civil War. This is a very sensitive, poignant statue of a surviving soldier simply standing and likely reflecting upon the terrible cost of war. As a vet, I am sympathetic. It is of value to look at this statue, and do some reflection.

A very intersting and controversial statue.
jan. 2017 • Alene
This statue has been watching the road to Richmond for decades. It is a southern Soldier but in my opinion does not represent racism or promote anything other than the sacrifices soldiers make in war. Regardless of which side they were on. there is a push to have this statue removed and placed in a less prominent location. If you really look at and analyze the statue for what it seems to represent. an excellent way to view the controversies associated with both war and peace.
