Once the home of the largest slave-trading company in Virginia, this building is now home to the Freedom House Museum. Built between 1810 and 1820, the home is most famous for holding the offices of Isaac Franklin and John Armfield, the owners of the largest slave trading firm in the region. The museum was dedicated to Henry Louis Bailey, a slave held in the building's basement who later returned to Alexandria and established schools and a church. The museum offers numerous exhibits about the slave trade and the lives of the slaves. Our guide Andrew was wonderful- he gave us a great overview of the building's history and what the museum contained. The third floor houses a collection of art from African American Artists, as well as some documents from prominent African Americans in the mid 50-70's who worked for equality and change in the city. The museum does have an elevator so it is handicap accessible for the majority of the exhibits. We used our coupon from the Key to the City pass for entry. I recommend you get the pass prior to your trip- it will save a lot of money on entry fees.

An interesting little museum which addresses an important element of local history. The introductory talk by a member of staff was the best bit - much of the rest of the building is a collection of local archaeology linked with slavery and the site. The tope floor is more of a local community association, which seemed more for the local audience.

Freedom House is a newly renovated museum that honors the history of enslaved individuals who were trafficked in the domestic slave trade. The scope of the museum stretches to current times and highlights the profiles of people who have promoted freedom, equality, and justice. The history of the building— as offices of the slave trade and later used by the Union Army— is also featured. As a site of conscience, it is impossible not to feel the weight of the tragedy that occurred here— standing in a space that was once dedicated to trafficking people into bondage. At the same time, it is a space that honors the best of humanity, even when faced with the worst of it. I received a thoughtful and thorough introduction from Karen as I entered the museum. As I made my way to the third floor, she met me there to ask if I had any questions— a very attentive gesture that I sincerely appreciated. There is a modest $5 entrance fee for anyone who is not an Alexandria resident.

This museum was thoughtful and well planned. I enjoyed the transition from when slavery existed to what current activists have accomplished in the last few decades in the city of Alexandria. You can explore without crowds of people around you.

The artwork on the top floor was beautiful.

I was very impressed.

A great museum with knowledgeable staff that explain well the history of the building in a respectful and clear way.

Our 3 year old son began to understand enslavement and how cruelly people were treated. As someone who was taught this history from an early age, I often wondered how I would do the same for my kids. The answer is to take them to a place like this. The museum is well curated and their small kids area of picture books really makes families with young kids feel welcomed and able to take our time explaining what it all means to a small child. I was worried my family might be too loud with a couple of sometimes crying babies/toddlers but everyone made us feel at ease.

Highly recommend for people of all ages.

Excellent museum about the domestic slave trade through Alexandria. It is a small museum but the docent, Karen, does a great job explaining the slave trade from VA down to the Lower South for the cotton trade. My teenage daughters are now of the age they understand the content so they enjoyed talking with Karen. A must see in the area.

Can’t recommend this museum highly enough. Very friendly, welcoming and informative staff. The museum is extremely well curated with displays very engaging, accessible and interesting. The museum tells such an important story of the domestic slave trade and the impact on enslaved people in a superb way. There’s much to learn and reflect on here. We’ll worth a visit!

Re-opened after a renovation, the museum is a great mix of interpretation and some artifacts in a well-balanced social context. I'm a bit sad the basement is no longer open and that they didn't restore one of the rooms to show the overseer's opulence compared to the people they enslaved but this is a fantastic museum. A must-see for the history buff and also for children that need to hear this story. Good book shop too.

The posted info is clear and well written, and attractively displayed. There is a video and books for sale in the entrance hall. It's a good first stop to walk along a circuit of several historic attractions in Old Town Alexandria. They give a map out to orient visitors to the city. Open only Friday and Saturday afternoons. They may let groups in at other times by prior arrangement. Especially important stop for anyone wishing to understand the reasons for the Domestic Slave Trade pattern of the 19th century linking Virginia and Louisiana and the Deep South.
