I took the train from Yokohama to the JR Kamakura train station; then it was about a 750 m walk from the station to the start of the (large) grounds for this temple, so quite easy to get to.
Expect crowds at the two main temple buildings, and lots of students on school outings in the fall, but the remainder of the temple area is much less crowded (but also less beautiful . . .)
It has some really beautiful detailed wood carving on the two main temple buildings. It's interesting to follow up a visit here with a visit to the nearby Kenchoji temple, abut 750 m further. The contrast between the sombre Kenchoji temple and the bright-coloured Tsurugaoka shrine is startling.

Located at a height, the shrine is approachable by foot from the station. Nice views of the city down below from the top. Pious atmosphere.

It's been a good few years since I last visited but it's still just as lovely as how I last remember it!
It's a pleasant tree-lined walk from the Kamakura JR/Enoden Station though we missed the cherry blossoms by a couple weeks so I can only imagine how much more beautiful it may have been! I did manage to collect another goshuin/seal stamp here thanks to the pleasant shrine staff. Of course, this place was no exception to the resurgence of tourism in Japan so do prepare accordingly for crowds especially later in the day.
That said, I know it goes without saying in a lot of major tourist sights in Japan do please keep in mind that this is a place of worship and please be considerate to the religious visitors and fellow tourists especially when trying to take photos! It was quite the experience to dodge folks suddenly stop to take a shot.

Amazing Shrine perched high above the plaza. What was occurring in the lower plaza Shrine...a wedding. So traditional, beautiful and auspicious.
We arrived after 1pm. The area was full of tourists and wedding participants. The stairs leading to the Shrine are steep and I would think slick in the rain. Stair wardens stop everyone from taking selfies for safety.
It was quite a walk along the Cherry blossom filled boulevard to this area. Worth viewing once. We enjoyed both the Hasedara Temple and/or the Great Buddha more. Would rate this as #3 on our to do list.

This was definitely the least favourite shrine of our Kamakura trip. There were masses of people there and it didn't feel very tranquil with bus loads of people coming up the steps. It didn't stand our in terms of the buildings, but for religious reasons you might get a lot more out of visiting than we did. The ponds at the bottom are nice however.

I know it’s important from a historical perspective but I didn’t like the temple. It’s a large and the buildings are decent but the whole place seems geared to selling you wishes. I found it very tacky.
My wife and I enjoyed the walk through the town but the temple was a major let-down for us. We felt that the Hasa-dera Temple in Hase was vastly superior.

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu is Kamakura's most important shrine. The shrine is reached via a long, wide approach that leads from the multiple torii gates along the way.
We took the JR Yokosuka Line from Tokyo for about an hour. While Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine is a 10-minute walk from JR Kamakura Station all of us will spend 30 mins or more, and that's due to the large crowd and busy 鎌倉小町通 Street that draws our attention away (see separate Review).
Dedicated to Hachiman, the family’s patron god, the whole Shrine grounds feature a stage, a main hall with a terrace, even a museum and some secondary shrines. Flanking the main approach to the shrine are two ponds. One pond represents the Minamoto Clan and has three islands, while the other represents the Taira Clan, the Minamoto's arch rivals, and has four islands, as the number four can be pronounced the same as "death" in Japanese. A garden, known for its peonies, surrounds the Minamoto Pond halfway. During April's cherry blossoms it’s not hard to miss; a cherry blossom-lined pathway leading through the city center, you will be led straight to its main Torri Gate!
The main hall (Hongu or Jogu) stands on a terrace at the top of a wide stairway. The main hall includes a small museum, which displays various treasures owned by the shrine, such as swords, masks and documents. Not to be missed is the Maiden dancing stage at Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine which is often used for ceremonies. Various events are held at the shrine throughout the year but in December when we were here, we just missed them
We were here on a Sunday noon time and the crowd was large, challenging to get nice photoshoots. Popular souvenirs among tourists from the shrine include charms for good luck, happiness, or longevity as well as amulets.
We spent an hour or so and left the wonderful place, via the same route we came.

It's probably one of the most popular attractions in Kamakura, so expect crowds. The shrine is easily accessible from Kamakura station.

It's just a 10-minute walk from Kamakura Station.
This is a nationally famous shrine with ties to the Genji clan.
It's a valuable place with a long history of about 800 years, and is full of history and culture.
Even on a weekday, it was bustling with worshippers and tourists.
Perhaps this is due to the influence of the taiga drama? I wonder.
The grounds are very large, so it will take some time just to look around.
There is a lot to see, so if you go to Kamakura, I recommend visiting here first.
