Perfect on a wet day!

Interesting museum. 30-45mins is all you need. Particularly liked the top floor on natural history. Variety of stuffed local animals and learnt about the amphibious lim which lives in caves. €5 for two.

Lep muzej i dobre postavke
aug. 2019

A treasure in Trebije.
jul. 2019 • Alene
I almost missed this charming museum. From the outside it looked closed, but I ventured to the front door and, alas!, it was open. I was greeted by Jelena Pujic, one of the Museum Curators. She gave me an introduction to the museum and it certainly payed off to try the door.
This four-storey building once served as Austro-Hungarian barracks within Trebinje's walled Old Town. The museum has some permanent and some temporary exhibits. For a regional small museum, it is Austro-Hungarian impressive.
I started my tour with a walk through a most interesting temporary exhibit of Contemporary Art
Though the style is not my favorite, this exhibit is unique in that it is geared for the sight impaired. Each piece has a duplicate in relief, so the visitor may have a tactile experience on the piece. Also, each piece has an audio component, where a full description may be heard.
Sarcophagus fragments and Roman busts are dispersed between two piano rooms and there are many displays memorialising nationalist hero Jovan Dučić. The top floor offers a fairly comprehensive summary of Hercegovina's history, from a narrow point of view. There's also a very interesting and detailed ethnographic selection exhibited, with captions mostly in the Serbo-Croatian language only.

Worth a pop in during old town amble
jul. 2019 • Familie
7 out of 10. The guide spoke perfect English and could not have been more welcoming or knowledgeable. The free temporary exhibition is on the ground floor and basic. On this occasion it was for the blind with braille and audio. The permanent 3 floors which are easily worth the 5 marks( £3) highlight the history of the Austrian Hungarian occupation, a famous artist and archeological pieces. Only the top floor had English translation but come and enjoy.

Hercegovina müzesi TREBINJE
jun. 2019 • Venner

A Serb perspective on history
sep. 2018 • Alene
The museum is in an old military building from the Austrian-Habsburg period. Currently it is a bit difficult to reach because of street renovation activities. Worthwhile to visit.

There are four floors with exhibits of which for me two stand out: the upper floor (the loft) with an overview of the history of the region (10th century until 1941) and the second floor with an ethnological exhibition of mainly Serbian traditions. The latter is done very well, but there are no translations in English or German, though many of the exhibits speak for themselves.

The historich overview highlights the Serb nation has fiercely and consistently fought the Ottoman Turkish occupation Indeed a struggle not only the Christian Serbs can be proud of, but the whole of Europe. I understood that initially the people on the Balkan did not gain a lot from the defeat of the Ottomans. Large parts of the Balkans including the Trebinje area were occupied by the Austrian-Habsburg monarchy. Only after WOI Yugoslavia was formed and a Serbian king ruled the country of united Slovenes, Croats and Serbs.

Claims that the Serbs were more tolerant than the Croats and others I found not very well substantiated. There are many long texts for reading and photos are not well displayed. You have to bend over cupboards to see them from the right angle. Still very worthwhile to get the Serb perspective on history. I hope in future there will be a section on the Tito era and perhaps even the 1991 - 1995 war.

Entrance fee for foreigners 5 BAM.
Very friendly staff.

Very informative

Lots of exhibits and lots of info - what else do you need from a museum? Before my visit to BH I was very confused about how this country: what is Bosnia, what is Herzegovina, what is Republika Srpska? Now I think I have a clearer idea. Very friendly front desk, gave a notebook and some postcards to our kids.

All that you need to know about Trebinje
jul. 2017 • Venner
And about Bosnia and Herzegovina. It's a small museum, where you can find facts about history of the town and the country, some exhibits of culture and living of local people, interesting pictures and photos. Girls that work there are very friendly.
