Everything was okay going up.
As we came down, we heard gun fire from both the Vigigal side (look this up in Wikipedia, it is a dangerous favela) and the Rochinha side (look this up as well, this is the most infamous favela in Brazil.)
We were so frightened by the gun fire that we stopped to say a prayer.
Then we kept walking down the trail. Behind us came two young adults carrying one giant bag of cocaine and another giant bag of marijuana. I speak Portuguese and we engaged in a conversation. They offered to sell us drugs. It occurred to me that I did NOT want these people to go down to Vigigal and tell other gangsters we were coming down the hill who may rob us. So, I asked them to accompany us down. They were nice and agreed. Upon walking it occurred to them that we must have money so they asked us if we would pay them when we got to the bottom. I agreed, but they argued a lot about how much. And, they only meant they would help us to the bottom of the trail, not to the bottom of the favela.
When we got to the bottom of the trail, they took all of the Brazilian money we had, so we could not afford to take a motorcycle down to the bottom off the favela. The motorcycle people would not take US dollars and angrily drove away. The drug traffickers agreed to walk us to the bottom of favela if we would give them more money.
We walked through the favela which seemed suddenly a lot different. We walked past a man with a machine gun (literally) and our 'guide' gave the man a hi-five. We kept walking past checkpoints where 10-15 year-olds were using walkie talkies to tell people of our movements. We wound our way through narrow alley ways to go past two more men with machine guns.
When we got out of the favela, the two 'guides' wanted everything we had. I gave them some US dollars (which we still had) but pretended to be confused about the rest of their requests and turned around and we left.
We feel very fortunate to be alive!!!
I DO NOT RECOMMEND this hike. If we had not encountered these drug runners, we would have had to descend through the favela past men with machine guns and hoped one of them didn't turn their guns on us.
Don't do it!!!! There is NO WAY to get to this trail without going through a dangerous favela.
BTW, at the bottom of the favela, there was a normal Brazilian police person. I think the city of Rio is well aware that they are NOT in charge of Vigigal and Rochinha. You enter these areas and you are depending on the kindness of drug traffickers to depend on your safety, not the police; I doubt they would have come up there to help us; they would have had to challenge at least three men with machine guns.
There is a Sheraton at the bottom of the hill, and while we are on the top we called and asked for help. They told us to just walk down he hill!!!
Don't go here!!!

I am not writing a massive review as there are similar entries already.
Easy to get to, friendly people all the way up to the viewpoint (including the guys and kids with the machine guns and sniper rifles...) ohh and nice monkeys too.
Stunning views, definitely feeling it was worth it until the shootings and explosions started....
Then we decided to just wait for the shooting to stop, but it didn’t and started to sound closer... ran to a clear area closer to the top so at least we could be clearly identified as stupid tourists.
More tourists came down, we waited together and then came back to the previously crowded but now eerily empty football square... waiting 10-15’ for a kombi to get back and end of the story, here we are, we have nice pictures but definitely not worth to get exposed to that risk...

Very nice trail (medium difficulty)... bring water and hiking shoes, it is quite steep and you will sweat a lot but it’s worth it! First we were in a cloud and couldn’t see anything, after about 1,5 hours the cloud disappeared and we got a stunning view!

O visual compensa!

This was great and 100% worth doing. I don’t think it took an hour and a half as a few people wrote, it was a bit quicker, but it wasn’t easy! It’s quite hard to get to the top only because it is tiring and all up hill, but we saw older people doing it so it is definitely doable! The view from the top is spectacular and you feel such an achievement! Warning, we were idiots and forgot water and read there were ladies selling it along the way - there wasn’t! We had to wait till we got down but we’re fine haha

I went to morro dois irmaos (2 brothers peak) in May, my objective was to take some cool photos at sunrise, as the general comments were that the view was incredible (it was).
I was staying in Copacabana and at this time of the year the sunrise starts about 6:00 am, so I left Copacabana hotel about 4 am, at 4:30 it will be fine as well. I took an Uber that charge me about 10 Reals to drop me at the bottom of the favela Vidigal, it took about 15 minutes to get there, this is the starting point of the hiking as you need to get a moto taxi that drive you to the starting point of the peak, it will charge you 5 Reals. Once you get to the bottom the feeling of security is nothing to be worried about as in general terms everyone is very kind. As soon as you start passing thru the favela you start thinking if it was a good idea to that as it is really dark and a place you’ve never been to. It takes about 5 minutes to get to the hiking starting point, you need to walk from the place the moto taxi drops you off to the entrance of the peak, it is basically to walk behind the soccer pitch. The path to follow once you start is very intuitive however it is imperative that you take a lantern with you as it is not an easy path to climb (it is not impossible, but takes some time) it took me about 30 minutes to get to the top, and the view was incredible!! You can see the ipanema beach, copacabana, sugar loaf, corcovado, it is just great to take really cool photos.
Once i finished taking my photos i started my return about 6:40 and 10 minutes later at the favela next to the peak (not Vidigal) I don’t know the name a massive shooting started, it felt like a war down there, so I decided to stop at the middle of my return and just stand there until the shooting stops, about 1 hour later it stopped and then I continued my way back. Once you arrive again to the soccer pitch yo need to start walking down as there are no motos waiting there, I walked about 5 minutes and then a moto taxi appeared (all the guys have a reflective vest to recognize them) and drove me to the bottom where I took a Taxi back to copacabana.
