There are a lot of people in this desert. The main reason to come here is to see Crescent Lake. You can ride camels, sandboard and drive four-wheel drive vehicles. But the fee is high, but this is the only way to pass through Dunhuang. In fact, there is no other choice. If you don't go to Dunhuang, I suggest going to Heidu Mountain. The desert here is more beautiful and the whole route is more beautiful. I think Dunhuang is not worth going because I have taken both routes. Going the other side of the road and asking the local tour guide to arrange your own itinerary to Heidu Mountain may be more fun. You may not know where to have dinner here. My favorite is a food stall nearby, which is opened by people from Chengdu, Sichuan. The boiled fish here is reserved first. It is really the best in my entire trip. I sincerely recommend it. This restaurant is called Chengdu Restaurant. Because my friend suddenly wanted to eat Sichuan cuisine. When I arrived near Crescent Lake, this restaurant had the highest review score and found that it was a food stall. It was a little different from the restaurant I usually eat, but I was too hungry and it was already late, so I sat down. The double pepper fish recommended by the boss is probably the best I have ever eaten in my life. The taste of this double pepper fish is very layered, and the fish meat is cooked just right. The fish is fresh, and the boss took it out and showed us before killing it. The ice jelly here is also very unique. It can definitely be seen that the boss is a person who is dedicated to running a restaurant. The boss is from Sichuan, so the food he makes is very authentic. Our tour guide driver is also from Sichuan. He likes this fish to a degree that we can't imagine. It turns out that he has been here before, but he was embarrassed to tell us. I guess this is his favorite restaurant nearby. Anyway, if I come to Crescent Lake next time, I will come again.

The first time I arrived at 3:00 p.m., which was just in time. Walk up to the top of the sand mountain. Just as the sun sets in the 10th month, the weather gets cold very quickly. From 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., it goes down to more than 15C. The weather is good. Don't be careless. It's going to be deadly cold.
This place is extremely beautiful. Every angle is beautiful, especially when the sun changes. The light and shadow changed accordingly. If you have enough time, you can also go ride a two-humped camel for 100Y.
Since the ticket was valid for 2 days, I came again at 6 a.m. We got another view. There were still fewer people. It was more comfortable to take photos than in the afternoon.
Tip1 : Bus line 3 runs from the city to the park entrance. and parked and waited at the same place on the return trip
Tip2: The entrance ticket is valid for 2 days. In the past, you had to inform the staff that you would be coming for 2 days, but now it seems you don't have to.
Tip3: If you're afraid of sand getting into your shoes After the card check point, there will be a point for selling orange cloth bags. But if you want to save Let's walk in a little further. Stand and wait in front of the trash can for a moment. Someone will bring it for us to use ourselves. After using it, come back and remove it from the original place. There will be someone waiting to receive you.
Tip4: Take drinking water with you. Inside, when there's little to sell But there are a lot of bathrooms.

Could not believe my eyes. Maybe 1000 or so tourist on camels, in traffic (ehm, camel) jams. Maybe only 5 or so hectares available for tourism; the rest of the Sand Mountains are off-limits. Screaming tourists, even a camel-traffic light, no kidding (See picture enclosed). We did the came ride and climbed up the sand dune/mountain with 17000 other tourists. Truly amazing, truly disappointing.
And did I already mention the helicopters flying over every 8 minutes or so? Sand buggies? Sounds like fun but you can't self-drive unlike e.g. in Dubai or Morocco.

On a separate note; We booked a camp-site close by for the 10 of us. Astonishing experience. Maybe 2000 tourist in a small area with over 500 tents, cordoned off by fences preventing you from entering the sand dunes area. Of course there was a 120db nightshow with KTV style singing and fireworks for sale resulting in additional noise until at least 1am.

Anything positive? If you've never seen sand dunes or rode a camel, by all means do go. But if you, like us, have Dubai/Egypt/etc experience, don't bother.

Unashamedly touristy but definitely worth a visit, and close to Dunhuang city, for the beautiful sand dunes and crescent moon lake which somehow never gets covered by sand. Activities include camel riding, hot air balloon, four wheel drive buggies. Snacks available but take water as sun can be blistering and little shade.

The desert can be harsh, difficult and dangerous. But also incredibly beautiful and exciting.

In Gansu province there is a huge desert which is full of life. Not green life but human life. It's become an attraction for fun. Formed around a Cresent Lake, it's become a form of Oasis

You can ride ATV quad vehicles across the sand, admire the sweeping awesome beauty of the sand and skyline. You can ride camels, and even check out the camel crossing which is a surreal sight.

There are also sky activities such as helicopter and gliding. There is more to the desert than just sand

We really enjoyed the striking views of the sand dunes. The entrance fee is 100 RM, but the ticket is actually good for three days, so you can come back at sunset and sunrise if you want. Once you are inside, you have an option to take a bus to the base of a dune for a small fee, or to take a camel ride, or rent an ATV. We choose none of the above and simply walked. slightly off the main bath was a path thru some greenery which was much cooler. On the main dune they have set wires in the sand to give you a little traction going up. There are plenty of concessions within the park and you can wander about as much as you want. According to the signage their is no worries about erosion of the dune because so much sand gets blown up every day.

We just spent 8 days traveling around Gansu province and this was one of the highlights. We visited at around 3pm and stayed there for a couple of hours. First, the views are absolutely incredible, especially from the top of the sand dune. We walked around for a little while and then took the camel ride. It costs ¥100 per person and the ride took around 45 minutes. We are budget travelers, so we were a little hesitant about paying for it at first, but it was definitely worth it. You can also pay ¥20 for the guide to take photos for you. I would recommend doing this, especially if you want some nice photos to remember the experience. They take the camels out in groups of 5 and they seem to treat them well from what I could tell.

After the camel ride, we climbed to the top of one of the sand dunes. It’s a pretty tough climb, but there’s a rope ladder to help you get a better grip in the sand. If you walk up without this, your feet will keep getting stuck in the sand. We spent around half an hour or so at the top taking photos and enjoying the beautiful views. There was a guy with a dune buggy at the top offering rides to people who were interested. We didn’t try it, so I’m not sure how much it costs.

Like most tourist places in China, it is heavily commercialized, so go there with this in mind and try and have an idea of what you would like your trip to be like in advance to avoid disappointment. We visited during the off-peak season, so it wasn’t too crowded.

This place turned out to be a lot more fun than I anticipate. We set off early to try to avoid the crowds. Even though this was just after the October Holidays, there was still a lot of people for 8:30 AM arrival.

Our first stop was the camel ride. For 100 RMB this is well worth the experience. The guides will set off in groups of five. The entire journey is about one hour. Along the way the guide offered to take photo with the our camera for 20 RMB. We took the offer and she took plenty of good photos.

Next stop is to the Crescent Moon Spring. The view from the ground level is OK but if you really want to see the spring and the pavillion that is next to it, you will have to climb up the sand dunes.

The climb is well worth it as the view from up there is fantastic. We used the rope ladders they were laid on the floor and that really helped our climb . Coming down is a lot easier as we just use gravity.

All in all, this is a fun outing and do set aside at least 3 hours to enjoy the place.
