Probably one of the most informative attractions I have been to in China. After buying tickets you go and watch 2 films in 2 different cinema rooms, which tell you all about the history and show some amazing close up graphics of the the caves - they give you a headset for English audio. Following this you go on a tour bus and drive about 15 minutes to the caves, where if you have booked a tour (280RMB) they show you around 8 of caves - a random 8 depending on how busy each cave is. Everyone gets to see the biggest indoor buddah. Tour guide was very knowledgeable and was interesting to hear more about the history of them. Leaving the tour area was very busy, again a barage of selfie sticks! A few restaurants and souvenirs shops around, then a bus back to the ticket centre. Great to see though, and amazing history to learn about. No photos allowed inside the caves, I think tourists should respect this and not be slyly using a go pro to take photos as someone else in the group was!

In order to get to the ticket you go to the tourist center and buy your ticket from the window (you will need your passport).. A staff member found us in line and brought us headsets that had the English translations of the two movies. The first was a general history of the town. After the first movie you move to a second theater that has a screen that wraps around onto the ceiling. This has high detail pictures of many of the most famous caves paintings, and is a good place to take pictures as photography is not allowed in the caves. After the second movie you board a bus to the cave. There is a long line that forms but that is for people who are on package tours. There was no clear signage as to where to go, but if you walk toward the entrance, there were some staff members there who directed us to wait for a guide. If you don't speak Chinese you probably could just show them your tickets. After a short wait and some other people were gathered up an English speaking guide appear and took us on the tour of the caves. The tour is impressive, though there are a lot of stairs to go up and down. Which caves they take you in appear to be a bit random, and the guides English, while quite good, was not always able to explain all of the nuances of some of the items. There is also a museum on the way back to the parking lot that has interesting exhibits as well as several reproductions of some of the more famous caves. You can than take the shuttle bus back to the tourist center.

These caves were constructed over hundreds of years, and the guide really allows you to understand the slight differences in styles throughout the dynasties. No photos allowed inside the caves.
- first you should pre purchase a ticket at Mogao Reservation and ticket centre in town or online (Apple Maps will say that it is closed) and book an English tour. It is also possible to buy them at the visitor centre.
- go to the Mogao Visitor Centre. About 20rmb with DiDi.
- once entering you will be given headphones so you can hear the 2 movies in English (they were both very interesting)
- then take the shuttle bus to the caves
- follow the signs/crowds to the entrance
- when you are in line, you will be removed so you can join the English tour. You might have to wait for the rest of your group.
- your tour guide will take you to visit the caves
- at the end, take shuttle bus back to visitor centre
- there was plenty of taxis there to take me back to town

An amazing caves with Buddhist painting from 6th century. It almost 2000 years ago, but they preserve the painting and sculpture in a very good condition, unbelievable.

There are even original wooden doors from that period.

This caves has been listed as one of the UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987.
In conclusion, it’s worth to go if you’re in or near Dunhuang city.

The Mogao Caves or grottos, Dunhuang are amazing and one of the best places I have been to in Asia. I visited Mogao on New Year’s Day 2021, minus 6 degrees centigrade but no snow. I had an English-speaking Chinese tour guide who was excellent – her English was very good; her knowledge of history, art and religion was extensive; and she was gracious in answering my questions. I’ve studied Chinese history at university but Western lecturers and textbooks are no match for a local person who is a part of the culture!
I visited 12 caves as this is the low season. If you visit in other seasons, you will see 8 caves. I was mesmerized by the Buddhist sculptures and murals, especially as I could see an evolution of styles through the centuries. The 492 Mogao Caves have art works ranging from the 5th to the 17th Centuries CE with restorations occurring during the Qing Dynasty, even into the early 20th Century.
I was amazed at the resilience of the art to earthquakes and humidity, but also perturbed by the looting and vandalism of European and American treasure hunters in the early 20th Century.
I spent 5 hours at the caves. This included the tour, visiting the museum (which has special exhibitions), buying books at the giftshop (two in English), having a coffee at the café, and wandering around taking photographs.
Some Important Tips:
# In high season, there is a daily limit of visitors.
# You cannot take photos inside the caves and in parts of the museum. This is important as the light from phones and cameras (even without flash) damages the murals. Be respectful, don’t complain.
# You need to go to the Mogao Caves Exhibition Centre first to purchase a ticket (140RMB). This is 5 kms from the centre of Dunhuang town. (Taxi – 30RMB or bus). Here you can watch a film if you wish. Please ask about the frequency of shuttle buses, especially in low season. In 2021, you will need a clear Health Code on your mobile phone (same as per booking into your hotel).
# The shuttle bus will take you to the Mogao site 20 kms away (part of the ticket price).
# Follow the passengers to the entry gate and show your ticket. If you want an English tour guide, please let them know here. I am unsure which other languages are available.
# You cannot choose the caves you wish to see but all groups will see the main ones.
# Don’t forget the onsite museum, gift and bookshop and café.
# Shuttle buses leave regularly to the Exhibition Centre. From here, hop on a town bus or grab one of the waiting taxis in the car park back to Dunhuang town.
# Doing a little reading about Tibetan and Chinese Buddhism, and Chinese history beforehand might influence your experience.

I really enjoyed our experience at the Mogao caves. Everything was very organized and there was a lot to see. First, we watched two short films at the visitor center before starting the tour. There wasn’t English subtitles for most of the film, so you will need to understand a little Chinese to fully understand, but you can basically guess what the films are about just from watching. After that, we took a bus to the actual site. This took about 20 minutes. When we got there, we had to queue up. My husband and I got pulled to the side with the two other foreigners who were visiting the site that day. We had an English speaking tour guide show us around. This was great as we were in a small group and could ask more questions and appreciate the caves more. The Chinese groups had more than 20 people. The lady who showed us around was very nice and answered all our questions. Overall, it was a very good experience!
