Longmen Grottoes Scenic Area is relatively close to Luoyang City. The history behind the building of the Buddha statues here required a bit of time to absorb and understand but knowing enough will help to appreciate this place more. From our guide we were told that the local tourism authority used the Covid lockdown time to carry out some on-going maintenance. Due to it's natural setting, meaning wind and water erosion, most of the caves have suffered some damages from it. However, it is still a very impressive and inspiring place to visit, especially those smaller statues have fairly intricate carving with fine details. The craftsmen who worked on the statues did not treat it as just their jobs, but a dedication to what they believed in. Those statues which were on a lower level were destroyed/removed either by vandalism, museum/collectors or various dynasties policies (Emperors anti-Buddhism due to fear of power held by temple). It was also interesting to note that the faces of the statues changed over time, again, influenced by the government of the day.
If you spend your time to take in most places, it could easily take more than 3 hours. Some part of the pathway could also be a bit challenging for those who may find climbing up and down the steps difficult. The day we were here the temperature was hovering around 32-34C! So instead of walking most of the way, we took a boat ride (cost $40RMB/pax) from one end of the river to the other side. Even though it was supposed to be low season, it was still fairly crowded, making some of the viewing area a bit tough going.
Overall, if you are within Xi"An and Shaolin Temple, put this place on your "to visit" list as well.

We booked a day tour from Xian to Louyang and visited the Longmen Grottoes and White Horse Temple. Our guide Lisa from China Highlights picked us up from the train station and the private car ride to Longmen was very comfortable and relaxing. Lisa will explain every details of each sites very thoroughly and we can enjoy seeing the grottoes at a leisurely pace. She is also very flexible and accommodating and took us to a local restaurant for some really delicious local lunch. As we managed to finish visiting the two locations earlier, Lisa helped us to change our train tickets to return to Xian early.

During my February 2022 visit they required a green arrow, the green QR code from a Chinese government pandemic prevention (screenshots for the programs in my last picture) and a negative nucleic test done with 48 hours of your visit. They checked multiple times and said both foreigners and locals have to have all of these items in order to enter. The grottoes were under maintenance during my visit and some scaffolding blocked the views for restoration work. There were also some stairs I could not use but I felt there was still so much to see and the main parts were left uncovered.
The grottoes are the best I've seen in China and are much worth the trek of going out to Luoyang. There was enough English signs to explain the signifance of certain caves and carvings. The signage was also pretty good too. The ticket covers you for the main west side of the grottoes but will allow you to access the east side carvings, a temple and a couple other attractions on the east side.
I got here as early as I could and I'm glad I did. It got busier as the morning went on and the sun coming from the east helped light up the caves. I had setup all my health codes the night before and was able to quickly get through lines where I feel I would normally have struggled! The east side isn't as built up so don't plan to spend a lot of time here. You can however get some good pictures of the west side from the east side.
I was in a hurry so I took a Didi right to the Longmen Grottoes scenic area ticket office. The metro station is about 5 km away from my understanding but I had troubles getting didis on the south side of Luoyang.
Cost to enter is 90 RMB which covers all attractions on both sides of the river. It is about a 2 km walk to the grottoes from the ticket center, the sales people encouraged it and so I bought a 10 RMB one way ticket to get to the park gate. I thought it was worth it as there isn't much to see on the walk to the grottoes. Once done you can take another bus back to the ticket office but once you get close enough you can get a Didi.
Bring good shoes and plan to go on a sunny day. The rock/stone surfaces were slippery in some spots and the light helps see inside the many many caves better! Plan to spend 2 to 3 hours in the area.

This was one of my favourite experiences and finest examples of Chinese Buddhist art. Housing tens of thousands of statues of Shakyamuni Buddha and a tribute to the ancient China that attained inner peace and prosperity. This is a 12km stretch of beauty and skill surmounts many wonders of the world including the Great wall of China.

Kaiken kaikkiaan mielenkiintoinen paikka jo pelkän historiansa vuoksi. Suosittelen käymään jos Luoyangiin eksyy.

Although we live in China, we only found out through following a photographer on Instagram. It is not one of the most famous ‘foreigner’ sites to visit but compared to those that are deemed ‘must do’ this is much better. Parts are over 1,600 years old. Only a 15 minute car journey from Luoyang station, it can take anywhere from 1-3+hrs depending on what you want to see and learn. The best is at the end (of course) but learning about the history is fantastic. We had a tour guide who was great. One tip- take the golf buggy from the ticket office (10¥) as it is one heck of a trek if you don’t. We stayed in Xi’an, visited there, and then did a day trip- start early, beat the crowds. Got an 8:10am train.

Longmen Grottoes is located at Luoyang which is not far from Xian and was my highlight of the trip in China. Amazing place with thousands of Buddhas and spectacular view. Leave 2-3 hours it walk around.

Hey i’m travelling from xian to luoyang by speed train. is it advisable to buy tickets on spot at the counter, or book online in advance?

Many people use the efficient, inexpensive, and frequent high speed trains throughout China. It is true they sell out, but I have never had a problem getting a ticket the day of going anywhere. I think that would depend on when you are traveling. Do not go during a Chinese holiday, don't travel anywhere in China during a Chinese holiday. I am not sure about Xian to Luoyang, maybe Xian to Zhengzhou, but buying online is your best bet, do so in advance and make sure you are on time, or you won't get a refund. Our friends found that out the hard way. Longmen Grottoes are the most beautiful thing I've seen in China, and I've been to 15 Provinces and 5 SAE (including Hong Kong and Macau). Have fun!

Anywhere between 2 & 4 hours depending how quickly you like to walk. Lots of stairs/steps up involved, so you need to rest once in a while

Hi,
I am a solo traveller... Is it manageable at Terracota warriors museum and Longman cave without knowing Chinese language. Also planned to catch speed train to commute between Xian and Longmen Grottoes. Can we manage the railway station without knowing chinese language?

How much time required to go through the sculptures.?
Phil C
Xi'an, Kina130 bidrag
I'd agree, 3 to 4 hours if you find these kind of sculptures of major interest. The minimum would be an hour and a half, that's if you take the bus to the entrance (Not the visitors centre) and don't spend much time at each grouping of statues or the East bank. But I'd personally recommend leaving at least 3 hours.
