We didn't have time for a tour (estimated to last an hour) so we just walked around outside. There are still signs posted that explain the significance of the 16th Street Baptist Church. The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute also has a segment about the bombing. Great stop on a Civil Rights Tour, but it is close to Kelly Ingram Park where panhandlers hang out, and we saw panhandlers approach some other visitors just after we left the church.

Volunteers do a great job of sharing the history, importance, tragedy and beauty of this landmark. Learn the circumstances of the infamous bombing and see the beautiful sanctuary which is still in use. Elevator available.

I really wanted more from this tour. We arrived 15 minutes early as the email instructed and read the historical boards in the basement while we waited. The first 30 minutes of the hour-long tour were three videos (one of which wasn’t even about the church bombing), and the tour guide walking us around the boards we’d already read. The last part was in the sanctuary where we got a history of the building itself and history of the stained glass windows that had been repaired.
The tour guides (there were 3) must have assumed we already knew the group/people who planted the bomb, their motive, etc., because they never mentioned anything about it. I totally understand not wanting to glorify the criminals, but it would have been nice to know how many of them there were, were they caught or arrested, did they ever go on trial, were they convicted, etc. Thankfully, one of the brochures they handed out had that information, but I thought it was so odd that it wasn’t a part of the tour... made it feel very incomplete.

I arrived too late in the day to be able to properly see the church. I had just finished touring the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute. Thankfully I was able to walk around the outside and take pictures of the church where 4 girls were killed by the Klan in 1963.

We got there too late for a Tour, so we didn't get to see inside, but we did look around at everything and read everything on the outside of the Church, which was still quite a bit of good information to read about. However it was a very Sad feeling to know that the 4 Girls that were Killed in the Church in the 1960s from a KKK Bomb that was thrown into the Window on the bottom of the Church, and also a couple of Boys were Killed that day as well regarding the violence, which all spurred the Civil Right's Movement with the help of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and other Leaders coming to help the terrible situation of segregation in Birmingham Alabama, especially with the Church being hit during that time. The Church is still an operating Church for Religious Services for the Public and Members who belong to the Church within the Community, which is why they don't have it open all day long for the Public just as a Historical Site only. They have scheduled Tours with certain Hours so be sure to know of the Times before you go. They do have a lot of Homeless Citizens that come over to that Church, and they look to ask the Tourist for Money, but we happen to meet a fairly young Black Homeless man in his 40's, he told us his name was Mr. Walker, he was actually a very kind man, who insisted to show us the Park across the Street and see the Timeline to the Civil Rights and all that had happened back then, he was quite knowledgeable of everything, and was an original Citizen born and raised in the area, and in fact his House, he told us, was right across the Street from the Church, which no longer has those Homes existing there. Mr. Walker said that he didn't just want to ask for Money but that he wanted to help Teach people about what happened there, but that People usually run from him and hurt his feelings, and of course he wanted a monetary donation, but at least he was interested in working for it. We learned a lot with Mr. Walker's help, especially in the Kelly Ingram Park, which has many Statues and information that not everyone remembers to go to that Park and see the Timeline on the incident that happened in the 1960s. The Park does have a lot of the Homeless Citizens hanging out in it, but they seemed harmless when we were there with Mr. Walker showing us around. There are photos at the Park of the 4 Girls who were Killed in the Church. Also the Church itself has a Black Box with the 4 Girls names on it next to the Window that the Bomb was thrown into and exploded. Mr. Walker told me that not only is the Window shown where the Bomb was thrown in but that the Burnt Marks are still there on those parts of the building that had Burned back then, and he pointed the Burnt marks out to us at the Window with the Black Memorial Box with the names on it.
If you come to Birmingham Alabama seeing this Church and the Park (Kelly Ingram) across the Street is certainly worth doing so, but it is best to go during the day, where it is a little safer than going over there at Night.

Excellent tour! I teach this history in my classroom, and this has been on my bucket list for many years! Must see if you’re in Birmingham. A chapter of history everyone should know.

We were educated about the civil rights movement and the importance of the community, marches and the horrific bombing by 3 excellent tour guides and videos. Great perspective about contributions of black churches to the movement. Very professional and moving.

What a historic church that welcomes everyone! We toured this church steeped in civil rights history last week and I must admit the church members did a fantastic job making sure every got into the tour to see all of the artifacts and understand the history. This is an amazing tour. If you can make it please go. This history is harrowing and you leave with even more respect for the experience then when you came. Thank you!

Visit this to see where the four girls Addie Mae Collins, Carole Robertson, Cynthia Wesley and Denise McNair were excited, giggling, dressed up for church when the bomb exploded and took their young lives, and to learn the history of the church, its beginnings, its community of middle-class black professionals and meet guides there who were children during the civil rights movement of the 1960s. It is living history.

Thought it was a good idea to go and visit this historic site. Didn’t know that you had to pay to go inside so I didn’t. The building is in great condition knowing it’s history. Maybe one day I’ll go back and pay to see the inside.

how to schedule a tour the week before Christmas or between Christmas and New Years

You have to call the church. The phone number is on their website. Look under tours. They schedule for the middle of the day during the week and not sure about Saturdays. Obviously no tours on Sunday. Absolutely do not by-pass the Civil Rights Institute next door. Incredibly good museum. Dr. King's cell where he wrote his Birmingham letter is there. And there are some great people working there. Also be sure to go to the park. The statue of the little girls is very moving.
Just curious. Our church group is headed there next weekend, and trying to also book a tour at Civil Rights Institute. How long is the 16th Street tour? I don't want to rush our group through.
Many thanks!

The tour of the church doesn't take very long, I believe it maybe self guided. There was an information number you could call at one time. Here is the church's phone number (205) 251-9402
