This home is nothing special, but is nice if you want to learn about the Antebellum history. The home is smaller than I was expected, and you watch a short film before you go into the house. There are guides there that explain things and can answer questions, but there is nothing special about this home.

This wasn't exactly what I expected. I've visited many mansions/homes over the years. I was surprised as to how small the main house is. I believe some of the rooms have been expanded to create one large room. Either way there are signs to tell you about the room and the home inside the house. You watch a short film before you enter the home to let you know about the history etc. It's not in the greatest neighborhood, but it is well-kept. I wouldn't say it's a must-do, but if you are interested in the history of the Antebellum period then you will probably enjoy it.

Classic 4 over 4 Greek Revival, nicely decorated with good quality period furnishings. Self tour - essentially no one is around (even in the visitor center). Your knowledge gleaned via video and small cards scattered through the rooms - which are all cordoned off, some much less generously so than others. All in all there's a sense that a lot more could be done with the place - as it is, it's rather static - though a pretty set piece. Nominal cost, as it probably should be - maintenance is the line item, not operations. Budget an hour.

An architectural gem well preserved. Tour is self guided reading cards set on furniture and watching video before the tour started. Grounds are interesting as well. If you visit this plantation house and Gaineswood in Demopolis you will be pleased. State could improve the experience by offering audio recordings of the history like is done at the Alamo in San Antonio. Security guards are friendly and helpful.

Website does not list one way or another if pets are welcome. We came, with our small pet, in a stroller, and were greeted by a defensive and rude security woman who basically scolded us off the property. We just wanted to walk around a historic site for a little while, to be off the road. They were clearly having a slow day, but that didn't seem to matter. As it was 87* we were NOT going to leave him in the car, for even a few minutes.
Our plan was to wander a bit, then hit a local place for lunch, gas up, and be on our way. Thanks to this security woman, we took our dollars to the next town up the road, who welcomed us, and our pet. I'll be thinking twice about stopping in Birmingham, again.

Judging by the number of visitors, this site does not appear to be too widely known. Definitely worth going to if you're in the Birmingham area. The house is beautifully restored, incredible furnishings and a wealth of fascinating history

A nice historic home, the only antebellum mansion remaining in Birmingham. Due to the weather conditions I could only view the gardens from afar, but they looked nice.

This is an interesting home with gardens to visit, but nothing spectacular. It's always interesting to hear of the lives of those who lived before us.

My wife and I just luckily was invited to join a history professor and her students to tour the home. Don't forget the gardens as well.

This is a very low key experience, self guided with only average descriptions. Not over priced, but not sure it is worth the effort to drive to it. Some good history of Birmingham but not much else.

there is a party room that is very nice in the back of the house. No one can eat in the historic house itself but the party room is old and looks very nice.

Does anyone know if there is, for sure, an elevator for people with disabilities?

Will this house be open for tours after Christmas? December 26-30?

Is the house handicap accessible? When are meals served, and do you need reservations?
Skrevet 21. august 2015
Hi! As far as I can tell, Arlington is not FULLY handicapped accessible, as there is an upstairs. There may be a hidden elevator that I don't know about, but the house was built well before elevators, so there may not be one. I think the downstairs has a ramp to get in, but I can't recall for sure. The phone number there is (205) 780-5656. As to the food... normally the only food is done when ladies' clubs hire the facility for a meeting or the like. However, I think I have heard of teas or luncheons occasionally being held there that are more for the public, and I think you can reserve a spot on those. Do call and ask! Thanks. :)
