Jiaohe City (or Yar City) was an ancient city that was strategically located along the ancient Silk Road. What was unique about this City is that it was built on a plateau or terrace which gave this City a natural barrier from any attacking enemies. To get into the City, one must walk up a long pathway uphill, and then there was once large gates that had protected entry from enemies.

Upon entering the City, you can see that this this was once a sizeable city because of all the structural remains in the area. As can be seen from the photos, many of the structures are deteriorating from the weather elements. The structural remains are made from an earthen material (adobe), which is susceptible to the weather. It appears to me that eventually this City will be "no more" because I could see no protection from the elements and no major "restoration" projects going on here.

This City is definitely a worthwhile place to visit because of its historic history and location along the China Silk Road. The Visitor Center located at the entrance to the City is also a nice place to visit because it has interesting photos and displays about the history of this City.

Ancient city. Large area. You are allowed to walk only on the designated path. You can get lost due to the maze of the path. Highly recommended. Need at least 3 hrs

The site is beautifully set in the desert mountains, on a cliff between two forks in a river. The official staff are helpful and the site is well organized with signs and busses and souvenirs. Other than for a few of the larger religious structures such as the temples, there isn’t much left intact from the original city they once stood but it’s still with a visit. In my opinion, if you don’t come in a hot day, skip the short bus ride and walk to the site from the guest services building. It will save you money and the walk is only about a kilometer long.

Definitely worth a visit. Skip the ruined village and just do the city. Also, make sure you get the ticket that includes the shuttle bus. The way the place works it isn’t really an option not to. Beware, it will be VERY hot. It’s a sun trap even in mid-September.

Interesting place. Apparently 2000 years old.
Will I come again?
Not during September!! It was 41’C which was too hot to walk anywhere!
I would come again maybe in March or April where I can appreciate this World Heritage better!

The Jiaohe ruins are one of the best preserved earthen architecture sights in the world. It is not as large as the Gaochang ruins, but we found it a much better experience. It is easily reached by taxi from Turpan center for RMB30. There is no public transportation to this site. We arrived early and bought tickets for RMB130, which includes electric cart and the Jiaohe cultural village museum. There are a few interesting sculptures and reliefs,a film area and other displays provide information on the city. You then pass through gift shops on the way to the electric cart area. Unlike in Gaochang where the electric car takes you around the city and walking is minimal, at Jiaohe you will be required to walk the entire city which is 1500m in length.

I would recommend that you carry a minimum of 1 litre of cold water before arriving at the site, as water is expensive here. The first stop is the Cultural Village museum. This is a good experience before going on to the main city, as it uses mannequins, models and pictures to show how life was in the ancient city. This will definitely give you a better appreciation of the city before you start exploring. Not many people view this area, and it can also be visited after the city ruins. An added attraction here is an example of a Uighur house which we thought was well done. You then stand in front of the museum and await the next cart heading into the village.

The next stop is the southern gate to the city. Before reaching the city gate you walk through a gift shop area which is the last opportunity that you will have to purchase a cold beverage as none are available in the ancient city. Head cover is a must, and hats are also sold here. Note that the pathway through the city is a steady uphill walk. If you have done some research on the city, a self guided tour and map are recommended. It is best to first see the courtyard, offices and residential area, the East gate and then the central viewing platform.. The path to the right of the central avenue is known as secondary street and meets east/west street which connects to the viewing platform.

The main attractions are at the northern section of the city, namely the Buddhist Temples, Stupa Forrest and Grand Central Pagoda. You will not see much persons here, as the walk is quite difficult in the heat and many persons do not go beyond the observation platform. This means that you will have much time to take great photos. It is essential to rest every 15-20 minutes, as we took 90 minutes to walk the city and the heat made it extremely difficult. There is a great model of the city at the electric cart station just outside the entrance to the city. This will give a better appreciation of the area that you have just explored. Taxis back to Turpan may be difficult, and I advise that you stand in the parking lot and quickly approach any that are bringing visitors, or you will have a long wait. Some persons paid taxis to wait while they explored the city.
