Shaxi is definitely worth staying. It's a place for experiencing instead of short visit. One-day tour only to the ancient town or other listed spots will not give you enough chances to experience Shaxi's lifestyle.
Here's what I got in Shaxi:
1) Picking up mushrooms in the mountain with local guide and enjoyed picnic and camping afterwards (summer experience)
2) Bonfire party and barbecue in local homes
3) Picturesque morning fog at Yujin Bridge (winter experience)
4) Unplugged singing concert, listening to local music under starlight
5) Cafes with splendid view
6) Hand-made flower cake
7) Tie-dyeing clothes with beautiful patterns and folk-style colors
8) Local people's Friday market selling groceries and local specialties
......
Shaxi is a gem for people who has the chance to discover it. It's a perfect destination for sojourn and relax. I love this place and those friendly people here and will undoubtedly come back again. Leave comments if you have any questions about Shaxi and I will try my best to answer. Hope you like here too.

A little out of the way but worth a night or two. Less touristy than other well known larger towns in the region. Very scenic, local minority people. Interesting shops and very good eating from simple noodles to more sophisticated. Enjoyed this town.

This is a less touristic typical ‘minority’ town where Bai and Yi people live. It’s partly renovated but you can still find some traditional houses in the little streets. When you visit on Friday there’s a market. Also take a walk by the river!

It is a remote town between Dali and Lijiang. One has to go through winding roads to get here.
It is surrounded by flower fields ,waterways and bridges . There are eateries, bars, foodstands . There is presence of supermarket, but it appears not many people are visiting as most of the lights are not on. In browsing, not much variety to choose from
The major attraction is the city square where there is an ancient stage once stood facing a large tree which fans out to provide shades on hot summer days.
If one is looking for quiet relaxation atmosphere, this is the place to be. It is not for everybody. The part where the stone bridge crosses the river is quite scenice, lots of newly weds gather here for their photos.
There is also a market place which operates on Friday starting at nine till twelve. You can see most are old folks farmers bring their products here for sale. There are lots of varieties especially fruits, leather goods, woodwork, mushrooms, etc. The street is quite crowded with bicycles, trucks and people travelling on this narrow cobblestone street

In fact I was hesitating between 3 and 4. But it was not possible to put 3.6. The village is very nice, there are certainly shops but there are streets which have really kept an old charm. There is also an old house to visit to get an idea of the life of the Chinese in their windowless house, a typical house in which some still live (from experience). There is a slightly upper class atmosphere, or at least tourists attracted by something other than kitsch souvenirs and crowds. There are also quite a few local craft shops and very tasteful Chinese clothing. It can be a nice village for a lunch stop and so. I stopped on the road between Lijiang and Dali. And I find it very different from what I saw in Lijiang and Shangri-La (especially the ocher walls). there is also the possibility of taking a walk to see the rice fields with the hills in the background. I think having a bike could be nice because everything is flat and there is almost no traffic. It cost me 160 RMB to return to Dali with 58 RMB toll. of course the route by highway is faster (30 minutes less) but the landscape is not of much interest, as with almost all highways in the world. here is the full address and in Chinese: Yunnan Jianchuan xian shaxisizhen

I love this small quaint ancient town. We went end March 2024 and there is a vast field of Rapeseed Yellow flowers blooming. It’s beautiful. If you miss seeing it at Luoping between mid-Feb to mid-Mar, then end March-early April, you can find it at Shaxi. You may rent a Miao tribal costume without make up for RMB60 and take photos in the ancient town, Yujin old bridge and Rapeseed field (just after Yujin bridge) either in the early morning or evening around 5pm when crowd is lesser. I heard you can find Rapeseed flowers bloom in June at Shangrila near Napa Lake or near High Resort Shangrila hotel.
We stayed at Shaxi Kogongdi Culture Hall. It’s new, modern, clean, quiet accommodation with free self-laundry. Good personalized service, too. Breakfast is adequate and pretty good.

This is a cool little place. Quiet, not crowded. Lots of character. A couple good western restaurants and a few bars. Great views of mountains and farms. Around two hours from Dali by van.

if you've ever seen clips in movies about what a village should look like, then this is it. It's been updated, but remains authentic, with the village still full of local citizenry.

For a look at true ancient history, it is amazing to walk around this town. most of the building are 600+ years old and the history dates back over 1000 years. Definitely worth a visit. This was part of the old Tea Horse road and later part of the southern silk road.

We are planning a visit to Shaxi in December but understand that the village is undergoing some major roadwork. Can anyone confirm this? And if so, would Shaxi still be worth a visit, or should I skip this? Thank you!
Skrevet 27. oktober 2019
We just left this morning (end Nov) and it was really not worth it as 80% of the town is dug up. It's a long trip for little benefit.

From Dali to shaxi to lijiang, what's the best way? I'll be in Dali but want to stop in shaxi for a half day on my way to lijiang. Can I do buses between the three or is it best to hire a private driver?
Skrevet 4. september 2017
Hi, buses are slower & I am not sure if there is a direct bus from Dali to Shaxi. If you take a bus, you probably have to go to Jianchuan, then get another bus Jianchuan to Shaxi.
You can ask your hotel or driver if there are already other tourists going directly to Shaxi, then you can share the car (& of course the fare) with them.
Shaxi half day is not enough, especially if you want to see the Friday farmer market.

This is a charming authentic village, not as tourist infested as Dali or Lijiang.
A beautiful main square and old temple are the highlights

Hi, I have intending to visit this town for 2 nights
need to seek advise from members :
(1) I am travelling from Dali to Lijiang then to Shangrilla by road, then fly back to Kunming.
I am having a dragging bag, shall I travel to Shaxi after Dali before Lijiang ?
or Shall I go to Lijiang first, leave the luggage at Lijiang then travel to shaxi.
(2) or shall I travel to Shangrilla from Lijiang , then come to Lijiang, shaxi . after Shaxi to Dali , Kunming
Thanks

Hi, members.
we (2 of us) plan to stay a night in this old town. need some advise . Please help.
i) we will be travelling from Lijiang to Shangrilla by bus, Is there any direct bus from Lijiang to shaxi Ancient town ? from which Lijiang bus station ? any time table ?
ii) Is there any bus leaving Shaxi to Shangrilla direct ? any time table ?
iii) which hotel to your knowledge is good for walking around ?
iv) is 1 night sufficient ?
v) any other advise is helpful.
Thanks
Skrevet 7. mai 2015
I can only say 1 night is definitely sufficient. We in fact did it as a day trip from Lijiang that also included a visit to Shibaoshan. We had a private driver/guide, though, and that certainly gave us more flexibility. Enjoy your trip.
