According to legend, Trakošćan got its name from the Thracian fortress (arx Thacorum), which allegedly existed in ancient times. Another tradition says that it was named after the Drachenstein knights who ruled these areas in the early Middle Age. The toponym Trakošćan was first mentioned in written documents in 1334. The owners of the fortress in the beginning are not known but from the end of the 14th century the owners were Counts of Celje, who at the same time ruled the entire Zagorje County. In the 16th century the king Maximilian donated the castle to Juraj Drašković and the family restored the castle in the 19th century together with a park.
The immediate surrounding of the castle is designed as a landscape park in which the lake, meadows, groups of trees and shrubs form a harmonious horticultural whole. Various exotic species of trees have been planted in it, which, especially in autumn, give it color and dynamism. A most recognizable feature of Trakošćan is a large artificial lake, about a kilometer and a half long, with an area of about 17 hectares and a depth of about 2.5 meters. It was an interesting visit, although the atmosphere in the castle is a bit damp and cold, even in summer…

We walked ~800 m from Hotel Trakošćan, up and around the inclining pathway, to access the entry of the 1344 Castle for the 10 AM opening(40 kn each). It was a perfect 1 way, self guided tour climbing through its 3 floors, each with 4-5 main rooms, then descending a tower staircase to its lower level kitchen. The beautiful neo-Gothic structure displays period furniture, 18th C paintings, and 17-18th C swords, guns and armory. After 1 hour, we descended to the 5 km “Fairy Path” around the lake featuring the reflected castle, the “fisherman hut” and numerous information signs about the extant flowers, trees and mushrooms.
At 1 PM, we completed our morning’s exercise on this dry fall day and returned to our hotel anticipating its picnic lunch.

Trakoscan Castle is a great castle to visit. It has an incredibly picturesque exterior, a nice lake to walk around, and beautiful 19th century furnishings inside the castle. Many of the furnishings are made from incredibly carved wood.

If you like looking at old furniture from a distance then this is the spot for you.
I don't much like castles. They all look the same to me and are, imho, depressing and uninteresting. But this one looked very photogenic and so we went.
Walking through the castle is the typical yawnfest that I've come to associate with castles. Room after room with beds or tables or what-have-you behind roped off cordons. I could hardly wait to leave. Couple that with possibly the rudest, most hostile person at the entry gate into the castle and it was a pretty poor experience.
BUT
If you leave the castle and walk down and partway around the pond in front of it you' can get some great pictures. It's magnificent reflected in the water. Unfortunately you'll have to pay to get into the grounds to take the picture and once you have you may as well go walk through the crappy castle.

The castle is beautiful. You definitely have something to see in and around the castle. it just thrilled me. Who likes to take photos will be very interesting for him. Set aside for the castle an hour and a half. Everything interesting can be read and seen inside.

While you probably haven't heard of this castle much, it's a real gem that's worth visiting. It's amazingly well preserved, in a unique location, and tells an interesting story about a noble Croatian family that served the Austro-Hungarian Empire, including interesting hunting trophies and historical equipment.
Be prepared for a lot of walking and slopes, as the hill that it's located on is no joke, and the castle might seem "small" when viewed from below, but it stretches upwards for more than a dozen floors. However, once you reach the top floors, you will be rewarded by some truly magnificent views of the surrounding land.
Absolutely baffled at the gentleman in the previous comments expecting to find something the size of Windsor or Schönbrunn in the remote mountains of Croatia.

A Castle without originality, except one wall art/coat of arms, it was original.
There is nothing appealing or inviting about this castle. It is all about the history of the family who owned it and whom they were neither royalty nor a country figures
The country’s tourism officials try to make history from unworthy and irrelevant aristocracy family and a history that was not recorded in history books. (excuse my ignorance if I am wrong... I blame the tour guide)
As part for the "Tauck Tours" Program for the tour, it was wonderful to hear about the custom history and the dance of the middle age era in the area.
The lunch at the castle was acceptable and good; vegetable soup, simple salad and light sandwich were all delicious. They should skipped the wine; they were mediocre at its best and not properly served, white wine not chilled.
