The meal we had with traditional foods was delicious! The tour of the site and demonstrations of the textile fabrication was fascinating. I highly recommend a stop here. I bought some beautiful scarves, sweaters and a beautiful woven tapestry for my office.

José and Marina are wonderful people with a wealth of knowledge of the Quichua. Their products, from blankets to clothing, jewelry, weavings, and pillows are beautifully made and excellent quality, yet their prices are very reasonable. Don't miss the tour so you can learn how labor-intensive their wares are, from dying, to carding, to spinning and weaving. Just a short ride outside of downtown Otavalo, this place is not to be missed.

Jose' Farinango is the real deal. The textiles are amazing and the jewelry beautiful. And, the prices are so reasonable they are almost unfair to him. Jose' was there when we stopped by and he gave us a tour and we saw a weaving demonstration. He is very proud of the history of the indigenous weavers and will share that history without being overbearing. That in itself is quite a gift. From the other reviews, it seems that everyone is treated equally well and it is clear that every guest is valued.
Everything is hand-made and is of exceptional quality. We were traveling light and purchased very few items during our time in Ecuador, but we couldn't resist when we were at Peguche Wasi. As another reviewer commented, this - not the market - is the place to shop. You won't regret the time to stop in.

Forget about purchasing at the nearby Otavalo market this is THE destination. Jose and Marina are exceptional hosts and nothing is too much trouble, from explaining the age old methods of weaving to being just gracious hosts this place is incredible. The products are genuine and reasonably priced and a substantial range is available. You could spend the whole day here and feel you had more to discover. We had the privilege of being invited to join the principals for a typical Ecuadorian lunch and it was excellent. Wonderful wonderful people

Life at 13 minutes North of the Equator
Peguche Wasi
I wish I had the space to write you a book about this encounter but, alas, it is a review.
Living in Otavalo for four years, you would expect to know all the great places to buy textiles. Well I just discovered a great place that is not only beautiful textiles but master weavers, good prices and a great history lesson all in one place. Jose along with 5 other weavers create beautiful traditional weavings with vivid colors and designs. The shop has so many different things including weavings, jewelry, hats, pouches, purses, wall hangings, double woven blankets, finger puppets, and toys for all ages.
From the original style hut out back to the dye garden you will learn about the complete history of collecting the wool, carding, spinning and dyeing with all-natural dyes to the back strap and loom weaving. I must say that if you go, please plan to spend an hour or two as your hosts are most entertaining and have a great knowledge of weaving and the history of the Kichwa people.
This is so much more than a shopping experience; it is a history lesson, a cultural exchange…… meeting, spending time in the presence of people that span time itself. It truly leaves one breathless.
My favorite part is in the back outside at the hut and the dye garden, to see firsthand how they lived, worked, made the dyes and changed the wool into pieces of art and that many have a function is a miracle you need to be a part of.
The feeling I got from Jose and Marina was one of great joy in the wonderful things they have brought into this world. Not only the artistry but the truly great things they have done for their people is a testament all unto themselves. So, if you find yourself in or near Otavalo or Peguche make the time to spend with some of the most amazing people on the planet. You will be so very glad you did.
Now just a little business, they can provide wonderful dinners for about any size group there at Peguche Wasi, with a very good menu.
The artwork made from the looms to the murals on the walls is a scenery delight. To sit quietly, taking in this complete visual trip into the history of Ecuador is like no other. The place, the art, the people will stay with you for a lifetime. And no one will make you feel more at home than Jose and Marina….. no one.

This is a textile shop selling woolen and cotton textiles including scarves, ponchos, pillow cases etc. The owner gave us a tour showing how the textiles were produced from wool to cloth, which was very interesting. Some items were unique, others seem to be available from other vendors. Slightly higher prices than in the market stalls in Otavalo.

Just outside of Otavalo, but much quieter than the crowded Saturday market.
Good prices and very nice merchandise. Also had a tasty lunch at the buffet here and got a tour with Jose, the owner, of the murals depicting the history of the indigenous people in this area and of the dyeing and weaving of the textiles. Worth a stop if you are in Otavalo.

This is a beautiful shop with hand made local items. Artwork and replicas adorns the shop telling of the history of the Kichwa people. You can also see how they make the articles from the wool to the final product.

This place is much less expensive than the others "downtown" (a couple of blocks more away from the highway) that have the busloads of tourists. Quality seems as good or better.
