Honestly, it was pretty boring. I love seeing botanical gardens but this one did not have much to see. We didn't do the climb to the top but just the lower part, but it wasn't worth it.

These gardens are a gem if you are truly interested in either botany or the history of Roatan. It is not for those looking for a quick selfie. The gardens are very natural and go through annual cycles so what you see (blooms, fruits) depends on the time of year. Although we visited in April, the dry season, we were not disappointed.

We lucked out and were given a tour by Bill Brady, the owner and developer of the garden. He came to Roatan as a Peace Corps worker in the 70’s and fell in love with both the people and the ecology of the island. He freely shared his passion and wealth of knowledge with us. We spent 2 1/2 hours and wished he had had an hour more time so we could have taken the hike to the summit.

Pointers:

Wear comfortable hiking shoes

Fees on website are out of date. Admission is $15 and add $10 for guided tour.

Allow 3 to 3 1/2 hours

If you call ahead you may be able to get Bill Brady as your guide.

We visited late in the afternoon and had a guided tour with the founder of the gardens. He is a wealth of information and passionate about his natural garden. How lucky are we that his mission is to educate people about the importance of symbiotic relationships between flora and fauna. I wish we had more time with him. We missed the flowering season but we’re still impressed by the plants. If you are interested in nature, and preservation take the time to visit here.

This place has been our only true disappointment in Roatan. I do not understand the many good reviews (or photos for that matter) as it was not our experience at all. It was expensive at $15/person (cash only) and we received a white paper hand-drawn copied map.
We wanted to go to the top of Carambola Mountain but after a long, steep, difficult, unkept trail proved to be a false start—by the time we did find correct trail, I was too tired to make it to top!
Outside of the main area, there are only a couple signs pointing to the trails. The trails are dirt, not maintained, not blazed, and we discovered the map didn't provide any useful information about the way up. We've hiked plenty in Hawaii, Costa Rica, etc but this really felt like a tourist trap being labeled as an attraction/gardens.
It felt like mostly wild acreage with a few kept trails in jungle setting for people to hike, with a small roadside gift store. Perhaps it has really been let go over winter months? Whatever is was, labeling it a garden was more than a stretch. I have seen many more beautiful flowers and landscaping at my resort for free. We could never find the orchids. My husband did enjoy finding a cinnamon tree. Construction was going on. DO NOT come if you have any mobility issues or are not physically fit.

Beautiful tropical gardens and hiking spot. The owner provided us with an indepth personal account of the island history in addition to the garden.

Plan on 2 hours if you want to hike and have a tour with Bill.

Definitely recommend while in Roatan!

The lower gardens are well maintained and labeled. Beautiful variety of plants. The upper mountain trail was accessible most of the way, but disappointedly had to turn around due to a large slippery palm tree fallen across the trail. So couldn’t see the spectacular view we heard about.

We spent a recent afternoon exploring the trails at Carambola Botanical Gardens and despite the heat ( June!) we were impressed. They've done a great job presenting the native and ( other tropical) vegetation. The site is set up so that you can wander the trails for 2 hours or more - stopping at benches or swings for a break now and then-, or poke around for 30 minutes if that's all the time you have. Either way you'll feel like you're exploring a tropical jungle without ever worrying about losing your way. The giant palms, up the creek bed, as you climb the "mountain" were particularly stunning.

This was a gorgeous park and a wonderful way to experience the natural beauty of the island. We were told there is a hike up to the top of the mountain, but it was one of the hottest days of the year and we didn’t have appropriate shoes for the venture. I would’ve loved to see the view! We saw some jungle spiders, trees unique to the area and the “Monkey La La” or basilisk lizard. I wish there would’ve been more flat hiking but what we experienced was nice

I can't recommend going here. It was expensive for the family to get at $15/person in so we didn't spend another 4 x $10 for the tour figuring it wouldn't be too hard to find our way around. Boy were we wrong. The lower part of the garden is interesting and well-maintained, but it's a small area that you can see in maybe 20 minutes.

We wanted to go to the top of Carambola Mountain but failed. Outside of the main garden, there are only a couple signs pointing to the trails. The trails are dirt, not maintained, not blazed, and we discovered the map didn't provide any useful information about the way up. We're experienced hikers but gave up after following a half-dozen false starts that either ran out, became impassibly steep, or turned back down the hill.

I don't know why this place has such great reviews. We felt misled and wished we'd spent our afternoon and $60 doing something... anything... else.

We enjoyed our tour of these Botanical gardens. It wasn’t exactly what we were expecting as I believe it was a bit off season but a lot of cool stuff to see
