An insane trek! The vertical rock-cut steps look straight out of an adventure movie. The climb is steep but totally worth it for the killer views at the top. Best done early morning to avoid the heat. Not for the faint-hearted, but if you love a thrill, this is a must-visit!

I visited last weekend. The weather was nice, and there was a good crowd. It’s a beautiful trek with 80-degree stairs, which are very steep. Make sure to keep fruit in bags or in hand because it's risky; monkeys can come anywhere, even in the middle of the 80-degree stairs. I was serviced by a monkey that came near me, opened my bag, and took the fruit. The trek is not suitable for beginners.

The stairs of the Harihar fort are quite unique. Most of them have notches to help with the climb. It took us about 2 hours and 10 mins for the ascend. The descend took almost the same time. We took plenty of stops based on comfort. My 65-year old mother and my 8-year old child managed to complete the Harihar Fort hike. So anyone wondering about the hike being a tough one, please at least give it a try! I already have plans to hike for a second time.

*Wonderful Trek to Harihar Garh*
*Harihar aka Harshgad*, almost 80 degree *standing, stone staircase (Katal Jina)* I was confused, whether can I would be able to climb it? (or can I descend further??); ultimately I decided to go.(Recently I had done the difficult trek to Phugtal Monastery in Zanskar Valley, so the confidence was boosted; another reason; more on that in my next blog!)
Finally, through the organization *Trek and Trail*, I and my classmate Dr. Hema and neighbor friend Jagdish and his wife Renuka , four of us decided to join the big group.
We reached Kasara at 12:30 pm , by a slow 10.22 pm kasara local, from Mulund.
Most of participants had arrived by the same train. The average age of all was 22 to 30. I (and Hema) was the eldest i.e. 61 years old and the youngest was a sixteen year old boy.
From there, we freshened up at Baba's dhaba(eight people in a jeep), we reached the foothills village of *Nirgunpada* after about two hours in two jeeps.
(On the Kasara-Khodala route, 1 km from Devgaon, if you take the Khodala-Take Harsh route on the left side, Niragudpada is a village at the foot of the fort. The first route is from Nashik to Trambakeshwar and the second route is also accessible from Harsh Wadi)
We were accommodated in the long porch of a house in the village.
We reached before time and rested for a couple of hours. Even though I was awake all night, I didn't feel tired, it was very cold there. The biggest problem is the morning ritual!
I thought that we have to go to the field . Fortunately, there was a well-built but Indian-style toilet in the distance. Meet in the dark in the mobile torch; When using it, I was not used to squatting and it was very difficult. But somehow I managed it (thanks to my yoga and gym.)
On arrival, a four and a half foot venomous snake lying dead on the road was shown by the accompanying villagers. It was really scary!
At 4:30 an , the landlady got up and made excellent onion poha. Although I am not used to breakfast so early, I took it for energy (with very sweet jaggery tea). Taking it, we set out through the Nachani field in the light of mobile torch and headlamp. A farmer uncle came to show us way to the base.
Later, I got tired while climbing the hill which had a high gradient from the beginning. We were climbing in our style, stopping in between.
I remember my MBBS days. From first MBBS we used to do many treks with our professor Deodhar and Bharadwaj sir.
And after about one and a half hours, that scary staircase of stone, stood in front of us. The way to get to its first step was very difficult (almost rock climbing). But actually climbing the steps was easier than anticipated . After entering through the upper Kesari gate, I felt rapturous as if I had ascended the fort and the panoramic view of the valley was delightful. There was a cave with a stone roof and one side open. There were many steps to climb again (177 steps in total).
The sun had just risen, so even though it was cold in the fort, the atmosphere was warm.
There is a Vetal temple on this fort. (If it is the month of May, you can eat the wild fruits of Karvanda.) After the climb, there is a small lake to the east. There is a temple of Hanuman on the bank and a statue of Mahadev and Nandi on the side. There are 4 to 5 water-filled water tanks around. Kapdya Hills and Brahmagiri can be seen in the east. To the south is the Vaitrana Valley. This fort is 3676 feet high. It was built in ancient times and was under the control of the Nizamshah of Ahmednagar. When Shahaji Raja restored the Nizamshahi in 1636, he also won this fort along with Trimbakgad.
Seeing the ranges and mountains of Sahyadri reminded me of Shivaji Maharaj, I felt a thrill and it felt worthwhile to have taken such a risk.
But ....... we didn't know what crisis was ahead.
After eating a little, I started going down the stairs.
When one of us went ahead, she was *attacked by monkeys* and checked all her pant pockets, opened her bag! Another girl who went after her was similarly attacked. I was also attacked by three monkeys. Monkeys opened the chain of my backpack and took out the toothpaste and brush (I think he didn't like the brand and threw it away.) Three monkeys sat on my back and started pulling me. All T-shirts and soft drinks, water bottles in a girl's bag pack were thrown away. Then some boys brought sticks and they chased the monkeys away.
The experience was very terrifying, as the monkey held us up on that difficult vertical ladder like a pass. So they thought that if the bag is gone, some people threw the bag down and gave it to their friends standing below.
(Organizers should have said not to carry bags on the way up )
There was a lot of trouble while coming down because of the very sleepy trail.
At 61, the entire group felicitated us both with flowers for seeing our guts and inspiring everyone; it felt worthwhile.
After coming down, delicious food like fresh fenugreek and flower vegetables from the field, polli, dal rice, was served in the house where we stayed in the morning. Even five star food would have paled in front of it.
Now seeing the photos and videos of this trek, many people; Why go after this issue?
Why?
I said why not?
It is a very valid point to observe complete security. (It is dangerous to make a selfie or reel in a difficult place).
There is no such indescribable joy unless you finally venture out of your comfort zone.
Ultimately it's all personal choice.

DO NOT go here on weekend. too much rush. It is certainly best place to visit for a trek, but these days too much rush here. Go with the mindset of Trek in western ghat, not a picnic..

Great day trip from Nashik, I arrived there by hitchhiking and returned on a motrcycle with some friends met there who were kind enough to give me a lift.
I started the trek from the 160A road (Khodala - Thake Harsha Rd). There were few times that I missed the trail and went on a wrong path but overall it was relatively easy to reach till the last part of the trek. Having offline map on the phone with GPS active helps a lot.
Climbing the steep stairs carved in the mountain was exciting. I visited already after monsoon season, during monsoon it can get bit more tricky.
Very much worth a visit. Beware of monkeys.

The best trekking experience, and well recommended!!!!
Few key points to note
1. Reach Nashik road station before 6pm
2. Take shared taxi from Nashik road to Triyambakeshwar temple (INR 100 per person and Maximum 6-8person in a cab )
3. You will be reaching Triyambakeshwar in an hour, and take a hotel room ( There are plenty of availablity, so choose upon our budget, i choose Balaji Place Lodging for 900/- with 24hrs hot water facility and decent room. Checkout at 12pm.
4. Start next day early morning 5am with either shared taxi/auto or private auto. I took private auto since I don't get any shared vehicle. This cost me 600/- to reach Harshe vadi and reached 6am.
5. After reaching Harshe vadi, cross the check post by paying 30rs (as you are reaching early there won't be any forest gaurd and no need to pay, the check post is open.
6. Start your trek from the check post and first 10mits would be normal surface and after that next 1hrs would be Streep walk.
7. The 80degree stairs will be only short session and going would be easy, after climbing up the stairs go still further till you reach Hanuman temple at the top.
Strictly wear well floor gripped trekking shoes.. there are so many places would be slippery on monsoon.. so avoid the risk !!!
Take rain jacket if it's monsoon.. you can experience the fogs around you .
8. Avoid 🚯, and there will be lots of Monkey family would be there and if they sees you are having any covers/food items/boxes/bottle they will try to snatch.. so BEWARE !!!!
9. Decline the stairs would be challenging, and be careful on your each steps.
10. There will be lots of mosquitos, either carry the cream with you or avoid wearing shorts..
Ideally recommended a track suit.
11. The entire trek ,you can be finish by 3hrs, and ideally recommended to book the auto or taxi in two - way, else getting vehicle for your return would be difficult 😔!!!
( There is a chance to cheating by auto wallas, so clearly explain them what you want and try to bargain as much as possible)
One way I paid 600/- and return it cost me 400/-only.
Own vehicle would be ideally good !!!
Have a safe and pleasant experience!!!!!

We were travelling from Mumbai to Nashik via Jawhar to trekk this fort. Raods r good, through valley section, with a lots of turns and twists. Drive carefully, it may take time as it's not NH.
It's just 40 kms before Nashik. Roads from highway to fort (10 kms) are not good, there r no hotels in this leg. However, small shops r there till the top of the fort.
It takes one hour to climb up from the foothill, I along with my 11 years daughter started at 5:15 pm and reached on top by 6:20 pm. Don't carry ur kid, if ur kid is not confident and strong enough.
Wear good trekking shoes for better grips. Yes, trekking here is quite adventurous and downward view may fill u with thrill.
Don't keep any valuable in backpack, as monkeys enroute come and look for eatables, and may throw away remaining items, like, they did with my hotel booking papers, vaccination certificates and water bottles. If they come, be calm, let them check ur bags, keep ur grip on stairs, and let them take away what they wish. They don't harm.
From Maha Darwaja (main entrance), there r more 30 steps that will take u to the top. Views from there is breathtaking.
By the time, we reached top, sun was set. All the shopkeepers enroute had left (shops were closed) , as we started late. Fort remains opened round the clock. But in dark, one may stray as after sunset it's completely dark.
Climbing down is more adventurous, I think. U will have to be on your fours. U will have to climb down in the same way (on your fours), u climbed up.
We strayed several times due to complete dark, and mere mobile torch is not enough. So start early and have sufficient time with you. It was a great fun, adventure and a lifetime moment trekking Harihar fort. We loved it very much.

Easy trek but be careful. The forts has some monuments and a hidden place which seems like old route of harihar fort which has a deep storage or might be old darwaja but going there is risky. Go at your own risk.

Is their any public transportation from igatpuri to nirgudpada??
Skrevet 2. april 2020
the area of kasara and others are low lying areas. If there is continuous rain then there could be problems in transport due to flooding on roads. Otherwise it shouldnt be a problem at all.
Carry very good grip trekking shoes as the steps are too slippery in rains, of the fort.

Not recommended. I did the same mistake, I started late and by the time i reached on top, it was complete dark. It's completely dark after sunset there. I strayed several times. However, I managed to reach safely, but, later i realised my mistake.

The best way to reach the railway station is to reach the harihar fort nashik railway station or Igatpuri
