Kumbha Shyam Temple is an ancient Hindu temple, which was built by Rana Kumbha. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The Kumbha Shyam Temple served as a private place of worship for Meera Bai, she used to spend long hours here in dedication to Lord Vishnu. The temple is placed on an elevated platform. The temple has nice architecture. A Kali Mata temple and Meerabai Temple are placed in the same temple premise, however Kumbha Shyam temple is dominating in size. The temple is well preserved / manintained.

Kumbha Shyam Temple is one of the most intact and beautiful ancient structure that is well preserved. it was considered to be the private worship place of Meera Bai who had dedicated her entire life to Lord Krishna and had also proclaimed Him as her Husband. There are several other small Temples in the complex.

During our visit to Chitoregarh..it is the 3rd spot we visited after Kumbha Palace and Sringar Chauri..here the Ancient Architecture-History-Myth are blended in a superb way..one can feel the legacy of Meerabai in this temple complex..

The Kumbha Shyam Temple served as a private place of worship for Meera Bai. She spent long hours here in dedication to Lord Vishnu. Benign at heart, she fed the poor and the visiting pilgrims with her personal share of wealth. Meera Bai was the follower of Guru from the holy land of Varanasi. The Kumbbha Shyam Temple has a Chattri dedicated to her guru, Swami Ravidas, who was also known as Swami Raidas. The markings of the footprints of Guru Ravidas have been preserved in this place of pilgrimage.

Maharana Kumbha is well- known for architectural wonders & fortresses. In addition to being a great warrior , he was a great scholar & a patron of arts & crafts & made Mewar a dazzling cultural centre. In Fact , Chittorgarh is known as Bhakti aur Shakti ki Nagri - Land of devotion & military strength . The main architects behind these wonderful monuments were Shilpacharya Mandan & Jaita. Mandans brother Nath & his son are also known for their skills. The architecture of Mewar reached milestones during Maharana Kumbhas reign . He constructed 2 temples in Chittorgarh fort - one is the Kumbha Swami temple & other is the Shringar Chauri temple which is located within the premises of Kumbha palace Complex & many other temples in Mewar territory like Mamadev temple in Kumbhalgarh , Kumbha Shyam temple in Achalgarh , Shwetambar Jain temple in Nagda & Surya Narayan temple & many Jain temples in Ranakpur , Godwar etc.His reign is also considered as the golden era for sculptures & paintings in Mewar & the monuments constructed during his reign are adorned with some of the most remarkable sculptures of that period especially innumerable number of sculptures of Lord Vishnu & Goddess Shakti.
Kumbha Swami temple in Chittorgarh was originally dedicated to Varaha Avatar of Lord Vishnu ( Boar incarnation of Lord Vishnu ) & was renovated by Maharana Kumbha in 1448 AD .
The temple stands on a high plinth & comprises of an inner sanctum, a mandapa , a portico & an open pradakshinapath . The sanctum is crowned by a tall shikhara , & the mandapa is composed of 20 stone pillars & is topped by a beautifully sculpted pyramidal roof containing images of 8 celestial beings .The entrance of the mandapa is crowned by a beautiful Toran ( archway) adorned with intricate carvings which is typical of Jain Architecture.
The sanctum houses the idol of Varaha in the principal niche . The carved panels of the walls have beautiful images of Gods & Godesses .
A Garuda idol made of black stone stands under a canopy supported by 4 pillars in front of the temple.
The temple shares its premises with the smaller Meera temple built during Rana Sanghas reign.
This is the most photogenic place in Chittorgarh especially @ the time of sunset when you can capture the sunset silhouette of the temple in awesome colours..
It is not wheel chair friendly as there is no ramp & one has to climb 15 - 20 steps to reach the temple & is also not suitable for elderly with knee problems .
