It's manor built at the turn of the century by a local magnate holding a high position (mudliyar) under the colonial rule.
The story goes that he built the house (which was a replica of an Indian Maharaja's palace) to impress the girl he wanted to marry. They had the "wedding of the century" (with the house being completed just in time to host the wedding reception) only to part ways in a rather messy divorce a decade or so later. The mudliyar is said to have lived out the last few years of life alone in a room at the famous Queens Hotel in Kandy and he had willed this property to the Public Trustee, specifically to be used for the care and education of male children. The guide will tell a slightly nicer version of this story while showing you framed photos from the wedding, which leaves you with quite a hollow feeling....
Is it worth a visit?
We expect so little from our Public Service, I thought the Public Trustee Department is doing a relatively ok job in maintaing the property, specially the land surrounding the house. However the house itself could do with a renovation and furniture to create a proper ambience rather than just showcasing bare walls and leaving the rest to our imagination. It would also be nice if they could build some facilities like washrooms, restaurants, seating space in the garden etc. as the house itself may not really warrant a visit.
Direction: Google directions are accurate. Road conditions are good and it's very close to the Kalutara town.
We have to pay LKR 100 as the entrance fee (This is for locals, not sure whether the fee is different for foreigners). There is a lady who explains (in both sinhala and english) the family tree and titles at the entrance to the house and gentleman who will take you around the house. (I think he only explains in Sinhala though).

I did not know about this castle until my Sri Lanka buddy Saman described it briefly. It was a lovely castle set on higher grounds amidst greenery and away from the main road. 😍
There’s a lovely history to it.
The museum guide, Dinisha, explained the history well and lively and showed the various parts of the museum.
May thanks, Saman and Dinisha, for showing me a part of Sri Lanka’s history. 😊

Bungalow belongs to one of the richest personals in Sri Lanka in 1950's, its said that this was made ,copying a structure owner has seen on his visit to India. story goes that , when he asked for the blue print from the indian owner , he was ignored ,however he has invited that person from india for the opening to show his wealth .castle has its own theater and a well structured ventilation system , bungalow is next to the kalu-ganga river which makes it a ideal location for tranquility for the owner ."Mudali" had his own army also . now its maintained by a fund . from the looks its not easy to maintain such massive bungalow

If you are someone travelling to/through Kalutara, this is a must visit site. Won't say much because you should see this castle for yourself and experience.

Richmond castle is a blast from the past. When you visit you will receive a short history lesson by a very knowledgeable guide. Don’t be distracted by the obvious need for restoration and conservation, the story and artifacts, as well as the building, garden and surroundings itself are worth a visit. It’s a short Tuk Tuk ride from Kalutara. We went with Pradeep from Freddy Tours +94 77 634 9248 (WhatsApp). He is a cheerful and friendly tour guide. He has good knowledge of the local area and speaks good English. Very accommodating and ensured we had a pleasant journey.

Fascinating visit to Sri Lanka’s past. We did a half day tour taking in Temple visits, tea plantations and a local waterfall. Our tour was organised by Freddy Tours Kalutara +94 77 63 49248. Freddy is a lovely, polite and knowledgeable man who tailored our trips to suit our needs and budget. We would highly recommend him. Richmond Castle was the home of Don Arthur de Silva Wijesinghe and has interesting history which you need to discover for yourselves.

Great building with a lot of history, felt like a time travel. Also very nice garden around, we saw a lot of flowers and some lizards. The price is 500 rupees and we got a guide with decent English for it. Also there is a river view from garden. Last piece of cool things is amazing woodwork in the mansion - great stairs and pillars all masterfully carved. The tour takes around an hour and then you can stay in the garden for any time you like. Definite worth visiting.

Вилла была построена в 1910г местным богатым землевладельцем. Потомства он не имел и завещал виллу и территорию вокруг приюту для мальчиков-сирот.
Сейчас дом находится в плачевном состоянии и требует срочного ремонта.
