I went there because I shared a ticket with Butsuji Temple, but I enjoyed it more than I expected. It was very interesting to see the exhibits about the Buddhist culture of not only Sri Lanka and India but also Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Bhutan, Nepal, China, Korea and Japan.
We highly recommend stopping by.

This museum, located within the Temple of the Tooth complex, is a must-see during your visit. Entry is included in the ticket price, and it provides fascinating insights into the various branches of Buddhism, tracing its origins in India and its spread across Southeast and Central Asia. Each country has its own section with detailed write-ups on how Buddhism is practiced there. Highly informative and worth exploring.

The ticket for the temple of the tooth also includes this vast and very interesting museum that traces and documents, even scenically, the history of Buddhism but above all the declination that this religion takes in the different countries where it is widespread.
It is frequented by tourists but we met many locals and school groups.

The International Buddhist Museum, also known as The Museum of World Buddhism, in Kandy, Sri Lanka, stands as the first museum dedicated to the worldwide heritage of Buddhism. Nestled next to the renowned Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, this tranquil museum offers visitors a chance to explore Buddhism's rich history and diverse practices from around the globe.
Within its walls, the museum features artifacts, sculptures, and cultural displays from over 16 countries, including India, Thailand, Japan, China, Korea, and Myanmar, showcasing how Buddhism has uniquely integrated into various cultural landscapes. Each exhibit offers insight into Buddhism's spiritual and cultural evolution across different regions, taking visitors on a meaningful journey through this influential faith's global impact. The museum’s serene atmosphere, graceful architecture, and thoughtfully curated exhibits make it a must-visit. Entry is included with the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic ticket, though it can also be visited separately. While photography isn’t allowed inside, I’ve included a few photos of the beautiful exterior. If you’re in Kandy, this museum is definitely worth a visit!

We did a quick tour of the museum where you’re not allowed to take pictures and have to walk barefooted.
The museum features displays of Buddhist parafernalia from different countries.
We found it very uninteresting and were glad to get out. Thankfully our guide didn’t seem too enthralled either.

Terrific for anyone interested in the spread of Buddhism throughout Asia. An easy hour of your time, accessible after exiting temple of tooth… also free if you got the ticket to the temple, so it’s best to just see them big together, temple first.

An excellent museum with galleries of different nations which practiced/ practice Buddhism. It’s very well maintained with excellent display of artefacts and information. I would highly recommend this place, and one should keep at least 2 hours.
Our Tuk Tuk driver befooled us and took us to many places which were not in our itinerary. We insisted on this place but he dissuaded us as he knew that cultural centre was in the vicinity of this museum and we would come to know, as he wanted to take us to another cultural centre, where he fixed up his commission. Rest of the Kandy city looked overhyped, continuous rain and tuk tuk driver spoiled our day. The tourist must hire the tuk tuk according to their itinerary, not that of the driver. They tend to take you to the places of commercial interests- gems/ jewellery/ spices/ tea etc.
However this place was amazing, wish we could get more time over here.

The museum is great and gives a great overview of the history, variety, and practice of Buddhism around the world. Don't miss this museum when you are visiting Sri Dalada Maligawa! Especially interesting are the exhibits curated by different countries with a tradition of Buddhism around the world. Every one of these exhibits is very different in its approach, focus, and curation. This gives a good impression of the aesthetic and spiritual variety of Buddhism around the globe. Visiting this museum first made me appreciate the ceremony at Sri Dalada Maligawa even more.

International Buddhist Museum can be considered as the world's first International Buddhist Museum. It portrays expansion of the Buddhism throughout the Asia. This place is located next to Temple of the Tooth Relic (Kandy Dalada Maligawa) in Kandy, Sri Lanka.
It is worth to spend some time there.
