Divine darshan on 16/Aug/22

Visited the temple during attending an office event at Talkatora Stadium. Located in central Delhi, this is oldest or one of the oldest Kali temple of Delhi. As a Delhite, I have fond memories of all the pujas and events that his temple hosted for teh huge bengali community of delhi. At its peak till 2000s it is loosing its prime spot as bengalis are settling in Delhi NCR and local Kali Bari's are becoming convinient spot for celebration of religious festivals.

My darshan at this temple brought back childhood memories and teh love for this place is still in my heart. I will always look out for the opportunity to viist this place again and again.

Go and have a divine darshan of Goddess Maa Kali

This visit was sort of nostalgic to me. My dad used to bring us here whole I was a child. Same environment. Same ambience.Just that the Durga ma idol is now placed at a different place(opposite to main stage besides Kali ma temple) and all the food stalls are now placed on opposite side of the road. No shops for audio cassettes anymore ..times have changed for sure😊. Could not have khichudi prasad..
Queue was long.We had to go to CR park too. One thing for sure...will pay a visit next year too.

New Delhi Kali Bari is one of the oldest Bengali accommodation, you can get here affordable dormitory at Rs.250 per bed, taken as donation, you can also get free food (fish curry). However, you have to pay for blankets and hot water.

The temple is not only a religious site but provides shelter to many visitors in Delhi. Best time would be during Durga Puja.

Location wise Kali badi temple sits in heart of Delhi, very much close to Cannought place and sitting next to Laxmi Narayan Temple. Its pretty old built in 1930. The best things I liked is Idol of Kali Maaa, so mesmerizing. You go there, fold your hands, and look into the Kali Maa Idol and you somehow feel the divine presence. And I am sure this place must be a must visit place during Durgo Pujo time....

Many years ago, I read a short poem by Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore. That Bengali poem said:
“Bohu din dhore, bohu krosh dure,
bohu byay kori, bohu desh ghure,
Dekhite giyachhi parbotmala, dekhite giyachhi sindhu,
Dekha hoy nai chokkhu meliya,
Ghar hote shudhu dui pa feliya,
Ekti dhaner shisher upore ekti shishir bindu”

An English rendering of the poem (by Rajib Roy) goes like this:

I travelled miles, for many a year,
I spent a lot in lands afar,
I’ve gone to see the mountains,
The oceans I’ve been to view.
But I haven’t seen with these eyes
Just two steps from my home lies
On a corn of paddy grain,
A glistening drop of dew.

This hobo has visited many places in many countries over so many years. But living in Delhi as I do, I have not really seen many things in Delhi. I have taken many of them as granted; that they just exist as part of Delhi skyline and are places to see only for out-of-Delhi people.

One of these non-visited places of mine is the New Delhi Kali Bari where I had gone many times but never really “saw” it. It is a place that almost every Delhi Bengali goes during the Durga Puja. But I made up my default a few days back.

The occasion was the New Delhi Bengali Book Fair (Boi Mela) and the cultural festival organised by Bengali Association of Delhi a few days back. It also marked the fair’s 50th anniversary. I went to see this and in the process renewed my visit to Kali Bari as such. This time I paid attention to some details of this famous Kali Bari.

The New Delhi Kali Bari was set up in 1931. Earlier, the place of Goddess Kali worship in Delhi was on Baird Road of New Delhi which was also the venue of Durga Puja. The old Kali Bari still exists and many worshippers go there. But the New Delhi Kali Bari over the years has become a centre of Bengali cultural activity in Delhi. Its first President was Subhas Chandra Bose.

Besides, the Kali Puja, the Kali Bari is the locale for all Bengali major cultural and artistic events. The oldest Durga Puja venue in Delhi used to be Kashmere Gate and now the New Delhi Kali Bari is the most popular Durga Puja venue in Delhi. The New Delhi Kali temple is a simple structure and the Kali murti (idol) is not very tall. Its design is based on the Kolkata’s famous Kalighat Kali murti.

New Delhi Kali Bari is spread over an acre of land touching the New Delhi ridge. Besides the Kali temple, it houses a guest house and has a very good library. Many who want to read the Bengali newspapers and books come there regularly. The place is quiet and serene and a visit to the Kali Bari evokes a sort of mental peace.

The Kali puja here is held in the traditional style and the puja rituals have remained unchanged. For constructing the puja pandal, artisans and decorators are brought from Kolkata.

The New Delhi Kali Bari is easily accessible being near a Metro station at R K Ashram Marg. It is also near Connaught Place and buses, taxis, electric rickshaws are easily available.
