A place with a lot of history. A legacy of the British Raj is currently serving as an institute of higher studies. If you are in Shimla, it makes total sense to visit this place. There is something to learn about Indian history, especially the days of the freedom struggle - the 1945 Shimla conference was held here and all the prominent leaders of the Indian freedom struggle were there.
The place is very well maintained and the same holds for the gardens. One can spend a lot of time sitting in the gardens itself.

great place to visit in shimla. One of the few things shimla has to offer .This is a heritage building that was constructed in British Rule around 135 years ago. A part of this building has been converted as museum and open for public. The rest of the area is being used for study and research by researchers working in the field of humanities. The institution is called as Indian Institute of Advanced Studies (IIAS). The area under IIAS cannot be visited by tourists. Many important historical events had been hosted in the past, couple of years ago when India got independence from the British rule. Great political leaders such as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru etc. had paid visits for various national conferences. Later the building was made residence of the President of India and was also known as Rashtrapati Niwas, Shimla.

Colonial history, can only be viewed with guide so check times and language. Cafe and toilets on site. Small garden area to wander if one has to wait. Worth seeing for beautiful architecture and historical aspect. Not expensive to visit

The Viceregal Lodge in Shimla, also known as Rashtrapati Niwas. It was originally built as the summer residence of the British viceroys and was later used as the summer retreat for the President of India. Now, it serves as the Indian Institute of Advanced Study (IIAS), a center for research and higher learning.

The Viceregal Lodge is renowned for its stunning British architectural design, combining both stone and wood elements. Its lush botanical gardens and picturesque surroundings make it one of the must-visit places in Shimla for tourists and history enthusiasts. There is a 30 minute guided tour inside the Lodge and each slot has limited quota with a maximum of 50 pax. Last slot is at 4.30PM as this place closes at 5PM. Guided tour along with access to outer area and botanical garden is charged 100/- for adults and 50/- for kids. If not interested in tour, visitors can pay 30/- for entrance. The entry fee for foreign visitors is Rs. 500 per person.

The best times to visit are from March to June and October to December when the weather is generally pleasant. The Lodge is closed on Mondays and other national holidays. Photography is not allowed inside the lodge, but visitors can capture the beauty of the exterior and the scenic surroundings.

This spectacular building built in the Scottish baronial style was the HQ of the British Indian empire for the best part of 60 years. You only get to visit a handful of rooms which are filled with pictures. Tours must be booked. The first room was the most interesting to us, with pics of the Raj era. The second room has pics of the abortive conference which lead to partition and (allegedly) the table where the deals were signed, and a fine walnut ceiling. The main entrance hall is spectacular, made of teak and even had a fire sprinkler system installed in 1888!
Bizarrely you are not allowed to take any pictures, and military style guards ensured this!
The grounds are pleasing to walk around, with plenty of primates in attendance.

One of Shimla’s grandest historic buildings, the grey stone Viceregal Lodge was built to house the Viceroy during his annual stay in Shimla, when this town was the summer capital of India. The building, in the Scottish Baronial style, was completed in 1888, when Lord Dufferin was Viceroy. After 1947 and Indian independence, it was renamed Rashtrapati Nivas; today, it houses the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, where scholars can come for advanced studies in the Humanities.

The extensive gardens around the building, with lawns, flowerbeds, and interesting trees, make for a picturesque locale. The ground floor of the building is the only area open to casual visitors, and that too only as part of a guided tour. The tour begins every hour from the porch (you have to buy tickets in advance: Rs 100 per adult, Rs 50 per child), and is a half-hour long tour conducted primarily in Hindi but with some English thrown in. The guide, after telling us a bit about each chamber we were in, allowed the entire group some time to examine the old photos/artefacts there before moving on. These photos mostly cover the historic sessions leading up to the Shimla Agreement (by which India was partitioned); the artefacts include a wall clock from 1826, and the round table on which Nehru and Mountbatten discussed the draft for the Shimla Agreement. The beautiful Burma teak interiors of the building are especially stunning. Note that photography is not allowed inside the building.

Public toilets, a book store (which mainly contains books by scholars at the Institute), and a small, very barebones eatery are part of the Fire Station building at the beginning of the premises. This is also where you buy your tickets for the tour.

The lodge building and gardens are impressive and on a clear day you can get a lovely view of the Himalayas. However, I found the guided tour somewhat underwhelming. We were herded around the place, as groups are, but spent way too long in the first reception room which was just full of old photographs of the area and people who had visited. i could have looked them up later or just heard about them on the tour as we went round. I wanted to see more of the house itself and it's story. They also didn't want you to take photos inside and some rooms like the ballroom and kitchen were sealed off to visitors. Not as good as I had hoped.
Also the only place I was asked my entire trip to wear a face mask.
Maybe read up on the place first or get a good guide book to then walk through the house at your own pace.

I was expecting a lot from a site that the guard said used to serve as the summer capital. I even shelled out 500 rupees for the guided tour inside the building, which turned out to be just a short partial showcase of 3-4 rooms. I have seen better palaces with British roots. The Scottish-influenced exterior is nice though, which has its own separate fee.
