A bit disappointing

First off, beware the monkeys! They lie in wait at the station in Shimla and seek out anyone with food. Our poor guide was carrying our packed lunches and had to run and hide before he got grabbed!
Second off, it doesn't really look like a toy train. I imagined open wooden carriages but it is a pretty hulking thing that is not overly pretty to me.
Thirdly, it doesn't seem geared to tourists. Not as I thought anyway and is more a functional train journey with mainly locals in our carriages. They also don't announce when approaching things of interest eg the high arched bridge/viaduct like other countries would do.
Finally, it wasn't as scenic as I hoped. Too many trees. Too many tunnels. You are either in the dark or have a huge tree right at the track so very hard to take great photos or see stunning views.
The pass throughs and stops at the small stations was the main highlight. These were delightful.

An essential trip. The train is small but not as tiny as the words Toy Train might imply! Not uncomfortable but quite basic. It stops three or four times and you can buy strong tea, pakora and rolls on the station. It’s a long, long journey - 5.5 hours. The view is somewhat better seated on the right of the carriage, especially at the beginning but it winds around. Over 100 tunnels. Although the view is stunning it’s quite hard to photograph as the trees grow right by the track. Not a journey I’d take with small or easily bored kids

Navigating the Indian railway system is not for the faint hearted, and patience is needed. Book early through your travel agent, because you do not want to go through the nightmare of working your way through booking on the net!.. Himalayan Queen and other trains are available, cheap, but get the deluxe for comfort, and a toilet in each carriage. 67kms in 5 hours seems slow, but its needed, you just cannot go faster for safety reasons. Keep an eye out for the highest arched bridge, chance to get a good picture on the curve. Plenty of chances for pictures on the way.

Amazing experience. Especially when travelling with kids. It was real fun. No tension of driving and parking in Shimla. Always book in advance as the general coach is really cramped especially on weekends. It is amazing to see how this rail system is still going strong and using the old techniques to operate

Himdarshan VISTADOME: a pathetic experience

I booked Himdarshan being mentioned AC VISTADOME for memorable experience to my family though it's costlier than other trains. But when I saw the train coaches they were very old and far from VISTADOME. One of the co-passengers got ticket just in front of toilet. Outside also it wasn't clean. Considerably cheaper train Himalyan queen was looking quiet clean. Travelling with train is great experience but railway isn't giving what's mentioed at time of booking. Moreover new VISTADOME coaches have arrived but don't know whom they are waiting for inauguration. My advice is go with any train other than Himdarshan as it's not at all a ac VISTADOME as roofs are of opaque sheet, until and unless you confirm that railway has deployed new coaches.

Never again! As a group there were 28 of us in a carriage with uncomfortable bench seats - barely room for two people. Toilets disgusting. 5 hours 15mins of unpleasantness. Thanks to Imagine holidays for booking us cattle class when there were lush padded massive seats in some carriages. An upgrade may have been a slightly better experience but way too long - especially as we had just transferred from a 4 hour Shabdi Express from Delhi. I see that there are much better carriages recently introduced. Beware!

One of highlights of my trip. The views are magnificent. Plenty of stops to stretch your legs or buy food/drink. I travelled in a carriage of Indians which was a marvellous experience as everyone was chatty, shared food etc. officially third class but better than some British trains. Warning- the ticket office does not accept credit cards so cash or pre book. When you arrive at Shimla station be prepared for harassment on a grand scale, keep your head down and keep walking. Shimla is hilly but everything is within walking distance

Views outstanding, pictures do not do justice, need your own personal experience. Pick up local food and drink at stops. Carriage very comfortable and airy, other passengers engaged in conversation.

Do not use 12go to book this train they left me with no ticket and still awaiting refund, so they would not cancel my train from Delhi to kalka and charged me.

Interesting but very shabby and needs refurbishing badly

This is a fun thing to do but it is very shabby. The Indian government needs to charge a bit more for Executive class and improve the facilities. The washroom smelled appalling. It is a Unesco World Heritage site and it is a crying shame to not fix it up. Pretty views.
