A fantastic place and not hard to get to. I took an Auto from Borivali station which cost 23 rupees. I spent more than two hours exploring the caves (there are more than 100, some are magnificent, while some are small and plain). Not many food or beverage options inside, so take some supplies. Now here is some useful information. First you pay the entrance fee for Sanjay Ghandi National Park (85 rupees for foreigners, ignore the camera charge). The rickety bus to the caves costs 10 rupees (my return journey was in a share taxi at 50 rupees). The caves come under ASI so there is another entrance charge: 300 rupees. But so well worth while!

The caves themselves are amazing. The security guards will keep harassing you however - constantly interrupting asking if you want a photo or telling you things about the caves (and then demanding a hefty tip despite not asking for assistance!). The site ‘cafeteria’ sold us out of date drinks too - it’s pretty horrid so I’d advice taking your own food/drink.

The caves are really impressive and Sanjay National Park was lush and green. It was such a nice getaway from the noise and crowds of the city. I went with a tour guide, but you could easily do this on your own.

Visiting here is an amazing experience not to be missed. They are the best Buddhist caves I've visited. The waterfalls and trickling streams of water were pretty and cooling. Once you've climbed the steps to the top of the caves the views are awesome.
The only negatives I have were to watch out for the security guards who tag along with you talking like a tour guide but say they are not, then afterwards ask for a tip.
The other was paying to go into the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, where the caves are, and then paying again at the gateway to get into the caves.
Also as you arrive don't be taken in by the car/van guys who say it's a long way to the caves and try to usher you to their vehicle. There is a bus running inside the park very regular that goes direct to the caves costing only 26 rupees.
Sorry I can't comment on the National Park as we only visited the caves.

Very nice caves, close to the city. You can spend a hole day here (take lunch but watch out for the monkeys). Very nice if you want to be out of the busy city center. For sure go all the way to the top, the view is amazing!

Worth visiting. This is located inside Sanjay Gandhi national park. Here you will have to pay an entry fee. Once you are in, you have 2 options of reaching Kanheri caves. One is by bus and other by private vehicle. We opted for private vehicle where they take you to Trimurti Jain temple, some deer sightseeing on the way, Kanheri caves and back to National park safari for a charge of 1300. Kanheri has a total of 109 caves. They are many caves you will find with Budha statues and stupas. Important caves - I felt that cave 90 had more beautiful sculptures than the combined rest. Cave 34 has an colour painting on the ceiling. Need minimum of 3 hours to cover all.

My wife and I did the Kanheri Caves Tour through the Magical Mumbai Tours.
Our guide was Sahil and the driver was Naseer. Both were awesome and Sahil was very knowledgable on the Caves history. The whole experience was 5 star rated!

We had the most AMAZING morning at Kanheri Caves. We took Uber both ways from Mumbai (worked really well) & rented bikes for the road up to the base of the caves.
Just after the entrance to the caves we met a security guard named Pawan. He has worked at Kanheri for 20 years and is super knowledgeable about the caves’ history, explaining how the caves were used, pointing out Pali script & explaining different buddhas & carved figures. He really was fantastic and we highly recommend him. Again, he is not a guide, but a security guard who has made it his personal mission to learn and teach about these extraordinary caves.
As there is no tree cover around the mountain caves, it’s best to visit in the AM. We arrived at park ~8:15 & got to the cave trail base as it opened at 9am (closed on Mondays).

Kanheri Caves are located within Sanjay Gandhi National Park about 6 km from main gate. Kanheri word is derived from Sanskrit word Krishnagiri which means 'Black Mountain'. There are about 109 caves and about 2000 years old. It used to be Buddhist Monastery where people used to study, worship and meditate. It has got many Buddha statues , sculptures and paintings beside many streams and waterfall. If you like history and culture then this is THE place for you.

1. I bought 3 online tickets, but on all 3 tickets my name is written instead of different family members. Is it a problem?
2. If I go there by Ola/Uber, shall I be allowed to go upto caves or should I get down at the gate & then take the bus ride?

Mumbai (Bombay), India387 bidrag
Hi, the name on the tickets is not an issue. Regarding taking a cab to the caves, there is a entry fee that is charged for cars that go inside the main gate. So if you want to pay that it is fine. Else you can always wait for the bus. Its a long journey till the end so walking is not advisable unless you are really passionate. The cab will generally drop u to the main gate.

Can I book a tour guide when I get there? At the main gate maybe, with transport?
Organised tours listed on the Internet are incredibly expensive, and I probably don’t need anything like what they are advertising. I certainly don’t want to go around the park according to other reviews it’s not worth it. I’ve seen enough Safari parks in India.

Its not a safari park and you don't need a guide. The desk at the park is self explanatory. You can cycle to the caves entrance. and then walk around the caves. Its a park right in the heart of the city. 20 mins from the airport.
Is there a bus from Borrivali to Kanheri Caves?
The number is? Where can I ride?

Hi, is the site too secluded during the monsoons? Will it be all right for a lone woman to visit?
mustpppp
Mumbai (Bombay), India73 bidrag
From a woman travelling alone safety point of view it is OK if:
- You go during main sunlight hours
- A holiday - crowds bring safety
- You hire a vehicle (with driver) to take you there (the park has leopards)
Some other factors:
- Monsoon means slippery rocks. Have protective gear, especially boots/shoes. You need to have good balance.
- Abandon if heavy rain.
