Since I was in Mumbai 7 years ago the area around Flora Fountain has been re vamped. I seem to remember that the fountain was surrounded by some nice greenery but now it sits unadorned in a pedestrian plaza that also includes Hutatma Chowk.
The fountain gets it's name from the statue of Flora , the Roman Goddess of flowers which sits atop the fountain.
Worthwhile studying closely to appreciate the ornate detail & symbolism.
This is a very busy intersection of South Mumbai so this area provides a little relief & is really quite an iconic spot.
The fountain has been here since the 1860's.
Area around is well maintained & clean.
I do think I miss the greenery that used to surround the fountain - now it seems a little stark.

Wednesday 1st March and we were walking from Churchgate to Colaba via Dadabhai Naoroji Road where we saw this fountain.
The ornate fountain, a heritage monument, is located at the Hutatma Chowk, a busy road intersection in the Fort district of Mumbai.
There is a paved pedestrian pathway by the Fountain which meant we could get up close to the Fountain.
It was built in 1864 and stands thirty-two feet tall, which includes the seven foot statue of the Roman Goddess Flora, the Goddess of flowering plants.
It was originally sculpted in Portland stone, imported from England in honour of Sir Bartle Frere, Governor of Bombay from 1862 to 1867. It became symbol of a new chapter in the city's history.
Flora tops the Fountain with a wreath in each outstretched hands, symbolising abundance. At the base of circular column, on which the statue stands, there are four fish, with water pouring from their open mouths into scalloped shell shaped basins below. From there the water spills down to the reservoir at the base of the Fountain.
The main part of the structure is an ornately sculpted almost square shaped structure. It has an arch on each side and on the corners there is a sculpture, four in total. They represent India's cereal and plant foods in keeping with the theme of abundance.
There are also 20 lions heads about the fountain, they all spurt water down to the bottom reservoir.
The entire structure stands on numerous supporting stone columns in large circular reservoir at the base which surrounded by railings.
There are so many facets to this beautiful structure it takes a while to notice everything, so don't just walk by, stop and have a good look at the beautiful fountain.

The fountain wasn't running when I went as they were maintaining it. The fountain was still quite beautiful and very nice to look at. The carvings and statues around the fountain were really nice.
I also quite liked the immediate area around the fountain since it was clean and nice to look at, particularly the step area.

This area which has a very rich past/history is now extremely congested, disorganized and very messy. There's always some sort of road work going in some part and it is never easy to navigate yourself through this mess.

Flora Fountain is a well-known landmark in Mumbai. The fountain is situated at Fort area at busy road junction, an impressive statue of the Roman Goddess crowns this structure and adds to its architectural beauty.

Zbudowana w XIX w. w formie pomnika w stylu imperialnym. Przedstawia rzymską boginię Florę Świetna jako tło do robienia zdjęć.
