Crawford Market is a busy, noisy, colorful and active market. It isn’t designed for the occasional buyer so just go to look, watch and listen. There are many vendors offering produce, candies, materials and supplies. There are many people around - those who stock, those who carry purchases, customers, suppliers, etc. Be sure to stay out of the way.

Vasant gave us a very interesting historical tour of Crawford Market and surrounding streets.
His English is impeccable and he gave us so much information about how the market had changed over the years.

Most shops only open late mornings. So it would be best time for browsing early in the morning . Later on it gets crammed up and totally chaotic. People keep calling you from everywhere to buy everything and empty your wallet. Everyone has online payment options but most of shops prefer cash for the first transaction of the day signalling good luck. Most of the goods are priced at double if not triple the rate so just quote your price and walk away till they call you back and agree with your price. For example imitation perfumes from Burberry, mont Blanc, Lacoste etc are quoted at 700 rupees whereas the adjacent shops sell for 250 rupees. Body sprays for 150 rupees are good steal as long as you don't use them on your body. But rather on your clothes just for a change. Some Shops will show you some genuine bottles of perfumes claiming to be original tester sets. The bottles are genuine but cannot trust the liquid inside which could be neutral injected spirit and cost around 800 rupees as claimed by the shopkeepers. Guerlain,Lancome,CK,Davidoff,Issey Miyake are all available without box.

Food items like cheese chocolates and milk powder are available in most shops for decent price like a bag of 100 pc chocolates for 200 rs or good quality for 380 bucks. Kraft cheese for 220 rupees . Tang powder for 220 rupees etc etc...

. Good deal to gift to your family and friends. But doing shopping and caring those bags and roaming around is a hassle. It's totally crowded outside and forget train travel with those bulky bags. Duffle bags are sold on the roadside for 300 rupees initially quoting 600 rs. It's good for a experience. You will also need one full day to travel from the suburbs, browse, shop and then return.
Rather order online the same items instead of getting mugged by the shopkeepers. And trampled by the crowd in the train. Since trains are the fastest means of transport in Mumbai as compared to Uber. Or rather travel by scooter if you are living close by.

It is what it says on the tin, it is an Indian market. It is not aimed at tourists. You will be asked by every other stall holder to buy stuff. Do not stop unless you really want something because the clothing stalls will literally take dozens of things out to show you and it can be hard to get away. It is great when you want something but if you do it at each stall you will be worn out. I was there on a Saturday and both the street market and the clothing market were very busy. This is how Indian markets are. You will get nudged by mopeds and yelled at by people wheeling wagons and carrying enormous packages on their heads. Most places want cash. Although I was not buying high end, they might take electronic. It's really interesting and fun. The street market has everything you could want but this is not a craft market, this is what people buy for life. If you don't like noise and jostle, this is not for you. If you are wanting street food make sure you look to see how they are washing cups and plates. You are more likely to get sick from poorly washed plates than from the food. I am contemplating purchasing a plate so I can try some things. I already have a stainless steel cup in my bag but wasn't not in a juice or sugar cane mood. There were a couple of banana stands. These are a safe go to snack. The other thing to say is that at some stalls if you are foreign you will get overcharged. I look at it with the view that I have a privileged life financially and I don't mind a little up charge. If it is egregious walk away. I checked with an Indian friend about bartering, she said it is not a big thing, it can work but she does not tend to barter.

The place with a historical building - structure, the place we get all kinds of food ; from local to foreign delicates. I visited this place in the month of December 2023 with my friends and I can say that it should be on your bucket list. It has all varieties of food, drinks, also there is shopping lane for clothes and home decor. All this at one stop that is CRAWFORD MARKET; and that too at reasonable and cheap rate when bought in bulk. All in all a good place and a must visit when you are in Mumbai :)

I’m sure it’s an interesting place to browse around but that pleasure is completely denied to visitors by the awful persistent “porters”. There is a sign by the entrance saying visitors must use a porter which these annoying people use as justification for following you everywhere & continuously hassling you to visit whichever shop they’re from. Stupid thing is we might well have been interested in a spice shop if they weren’t so aggressive about it.

For Tourists this is probably the most well known market in South Mumbai.
Not very far beyond Chhatrapati Shivaji Railway Terminus. Just make sure you go to the left of the flyover & not right like I did at first.
I believe that the market , unlike many , does not get going properly until late morning so no point in getting there too early.
The main building dates from the 1860's & was donated to the city by Cowasji Jehangir. ( the convocation Hall of Bombay University bears his name , too ).
It is interesting to note the carved panels above the entrance , 2 of them carried out by Rudyard Kipling's father , John Lockwood Kipling.
Once inside you will find a high , skylit roof & a stone fountain. All the aisles are well lit & various stalls are piled high with a dazzling array of goods : Vegetables , fruit , dried fruit , nuts , spices , chocolate , household goods & any amount of jars & packets containing a bewildering array of sauces , olives , jelly mixes etc.
Most fruit sellers had a delicious looking pile of Alphonse Mangos on display.
I kept well away from the pet section , not wishing to witness the caged birds that I could hear.
To one side of the main entrance there is a dingy shed area used exclusively for the sale of fruit & vegetables.
This was the first Market in the whole of India to be lit by electricity.
