Just a small slice of Buddhist caves. Kind of incomplete. Nothing much to see. Can skip. All that can be appreciated is preserve this huge chunk of land in such a busy capital city.

Had been to this ancient rock cut caves a few weeks ago. These caves are located on a hillock and is under the ASI.

Earlier known as Kondivita Caves, these caves are visited by Indian and foreign tourists. There are 19 rock cut caves carved out of a solid basalt rock. There is a small garden in front of the caves. One can get views of the surrounding area on top of the hill. Earlier, there was no entrance fee. Now, the entrance fees are Rs. 20 per Indian and Rs. 300 per foreigner. One has to fill the form and pay the fees online upfront. These caves are open from 9 am to 5 pm everyday. There are mobile toilets and small wash basin installed in the vicinity. Had visited these caves, admired the rock cut sculptures and saw the water cisterns cover with leaves on top of the hill.

These caves are an ideal place for families as well as history lovers. It is a must visit and should not be missed.

Buddhist Monastery to be found in Andheri District of Mumbai.
The site consists of 19 caves carved out of the solid rock over 2 separate periods.
I got there via a taxi from South Mumbai & the caves are not too far from the Western Express Highway but we encountered some pretty hideous congestion after leaving the Highway.
It was easy enough to park right outside the cave site which is fenced off. Plenty of shops for refreshment.
Payment is cashless which may present a problem for foreign travellers such as myself.
All I will say is that an alternative is possible.
Once inside , the site is clean & well maintained.
Being fairly high up , there is the possibility of a view , barring smog/ heat haze.
Probably more interesting for Buddhist & scholars. For run of the mill tourists such as myself not really worth more than a 30 minutes look

Interesting caves. A but if the main track so make sure you can get a taxi back if you go alone. Plenty of Tuktuk though.

Clean and worth an hour to wander around.

The Mahakali Caves are not as popular as Kanheri Caves. The nearest railway station is Andheri on the Western Railway. These are also known as Kondivite Caves due to the presence of a village of the same name. There are around 19 rock-cut caves.
There are only small shops outside the entrance of the caves.

The location vis not well publicised. The caves are clean and maintained well. More information would be helpful.
Entrance fee of 20 is ok. Access to the location can be improved. I travelled both ways by autorickshaw.
Drinking water supply was not working.
Will be worth for people interested in architecture history etc..
Overall, I didn't find it worth the effort to travel till there.

There is not much left to see in these caves as most of the carvings have been eroded. Also, the place is very badly managed, infact most of the times there's no one at the gate to even charge a fee. Also, there is no guide available to give you a proper tour.

It's a nice place to visit and see ancient caves. Not much is preserved. However what is present is really nice. Caves are set opposite Mumbai skyline. It's preserved under asi so entry fee is charged. Plus water and toilet facility is available.

Mahakali Caves are group of 19 rock cut monuments located in the western suburb of Andheri. These are a Buddhist monastery beautifully carved out of rocks. These caves are carved out of solid basalt rock. They are also known as viharas where monks used to stay. But the cave no 9 of the south eastern group is a prayer hall.
The caves have images of Lord Buddha engraved on them but they are not clearly visible as they have become mutilated. The caves are located on a hill that overlooks this link road and the government runs buses to these caves.

It's surely a place to visit if you're into buddhist caves, you have some knowledge on this subject or if you have someone to guide you here. These caves are built in two different time period. And there could have been more of them if not for the bad rock. There are not many details remaining since this rock weathers very easily. For the same reason, you'll see cement used to support structures from further breakdown. And yet, there are some inscriptions, a Buddha Stupa and some images worth seeing. There is also a visible difference between the two eras of construction, the later one shows more hindu influence.
Getting there - by BEST bus or taxi
Entrance is free of charge
