The employees ask foreigners for an 800% markup on the adult ticket price. This is not on their website or signage. Security parroted that you have to pay eight times more. They let me leave. Horrible place.

There are very few animals to call it a zoo. There are cages for lions and wolves but they are yet to be introduced in to the zoo. The animals we see have nothing exotic about it. The only charming section is the one with penguins. If one goes there perceiving it as a zoo, one is more than likely to be disappointed. But there are other positives. It is a green lung in the middle of the city where the green leaves of any plant are found in brown colour with multiple layers of dust on them. There are several exotic trees the details of which are given on the tree itself which are extremely well maintained. Open spaces with decent air in the middle of the city is indeed a great charm. It provides a great picnic spot for small groups. Regarding the entry fee - a family of four is entitled for a single ticket for INR 100. Entry is free for senior citizens. Adults are charged INR 50/ person and children INR 25/person. There is a decent parking area in the front which seems to have some charge. There are innumerable toilets in the property right from the entrance onwards. There are at least 2 food courts in the zoo.

I'm a regular at the Byculla Zoo (Rani Baug) for the past 2 decades. The zoo was originally and still is a splendid botanical garden, with an abundance of greenery giving verdant relief in the heart of Mumbai's concrete jungle.

Previously I consciously avoided the animal enclosures as Im not happy with the idea of life imprisonment for the hapless creatures. Then there was a period of complete renovation which is still not quite complete, as well as the Covid lockdown when the zoo was closed to the public.

Now after resuming our regular visits, I must admit that the renovation has been very much for the better and the Zoo currently attracts hordes of daily visitors and revenue.

Most come for the star attraction - the tiger, who obliges the crowds by pacing up and down in front of them a few times before jumping into his swimming pool and coming up close to meet his excited audience (through the glass panel). The penguins also attract a good crowd. There are also black bears, a couple of hapless leopards in a small enclosure, hippos, deer, a sick old elephant, a fairly well made walk through water bird aviary which needs a much higher ceiling, and assorted other animals. Lions are expected soon. Cant help feeling sorry for the life sentence these poor creatures are stuck with ... I wish at least the tiger and leopards could be relocated to the much larger safari area of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park in Borivili.

The old trees and the many gardens are as verdant as ever. Rare trees such as the Amherstia nobilis, Gustavia superba, Strophanthus boivinii and others regularly bloom in their seasons. Mongooses roam freely on the grounds as do assorted butterflies, birds and some cute stray cats. There are also a good nursery, a rose, medicinal and a butterfly garden as well as a small forest walk, a closed Japanese garden and a tiny patch of Miyawaki forest.

A small food court selling popular snacks, water etc is near the hippos.

I wholeheartedly recommend the Zoo to all local Mumbai residents, and certainly to visitors who have the time.

Wednesdays are closed. Weekends are packed. Come early at opening time if you want an unhurried view of the tiger in his swimming pool. Senior citizens free entry with ID. From memory, entry is INR50 per adult, INR100 for family of 4.

Visited this Zoo with my daugther. Surprisingly, not many Mumbaikars were aware that this Zoo has been renovated and has "Penguine". Zoo is very well maintained and has animals like Elephant, Tiger, Lion, Hippo, Crocodile, Bird section, Turtle Section etc.
For us the best part was "Humbolt Penguine" gallary. It was exciting to see Penguines right in front of you.
Really a nice weekend place with kids. Good food options also available.

The Zoo is an excellent spot to visit with kids and adults. It is well planned and walkways are easy and wheel chair friendly. The penguin enclave is the show stopper. In addition to the abundant animals, the entire atmosphere with paved walkways and nice large shady trees makes it a pleasureable experience. They must introduce a small EV for elderly people who may not wish to walk like in other Zoos in HYD, Mysore etc.
