A good warehouse of art work articles. Needs better exhibition with price and material details. Price range not competitive. Staff keep engaging themselves in cell phone unmindful of the prospective buyers. Government servants!! Suffocating inside is repulsive!!

I had bought 5.5’ kuthuvilakku for occasions use. It is really very nice design and high quality.
Very very reasonable price. The team are very supportive and the polishing guy take very very care to polish the set and given.
They do many items..., super work. I strongly suggest people should go and see TN government operated unit and how quality and value for money and how supportive staffs.

On 9 March, I visited with a friend. I bought a couple of religious artefacts then we both went to the textile area, where the salesman showed us pashminas of various qualities. He told us that those we liked were about £20 each in UK currency, and when we decided to buy two each, he quoted us a price of 3696 rupees per two pashminas, which of course we were happy to pay. However, we were charged not 3696 rupees but 36960 rupees for the 2. It is evident that an error was made as we both have the same clear memory of the price quoted by the salesman & we would never have paid that for them.
We each emailed the shop & have had no acknowledgement.
I guess we should have checked more closely, but we trusted what the salesman said.

I visited last week for the first time in 20 years of being a madrasi ,and regret not having come here before.I was hugely impressed by the workmanship of deities,numerous crafts and show case stuff available.The quality is superior which is reflected in the price.
The staff were surprisingly helpful when asked questions and even few volunteered information.There was no hard selling salesman talk which was helpful.
I will definitely be returning more often.

Beaucoup de choix, sur deux niveaux, pour rapporter des souvenirs et des cadeaux. Il y en a pour tous les goûts et à tous les prix. Les prix sont très corrects et affichés (peu ou pas de marchandage possible). Le vendeur du rayon bijou vous signale spontanément ceux qui ne sont pas en argent.... Le vendeur d'écharpes vous explique la différence des prix en fonction des matériaux utilisés. On vous laisse tourner dans les rayons sans (trop) vous harceler. Bref, c'est le lieu idéal pour faire vos achats sans stress et dépenser vos dernières roupies avant de partir.
Aucun guide ou chauffeur ne vous amènera ici car ils ne touchent pas de commission, c'est un "magasin d'état". Et c'était ouvert un dimanche.

My search for a good Bronze Nataraja statue led me to this place after visiting a few others nearby. Though being a government run organization the staff are really friendly and try to help out wherever they can. They exactly tell you the plus and minus of each product. The ground floor is full of statues made of bronze and stone and the upper floor contains a variety of sections starting from hand loom made crafts, wood, metal and so on and so forth. There are several choices to choose from if you go here and you cannot come back empty handed. They also encourage self help groups to come and display thier products during festival season. During the festive season they are very crowded, but otherwise it is a good place for peaceful shopping. The car park is in front of the shop itself and can hold upto around 10 cars. The only small draw back i see in this place is that the finish of a lot of goods is not to perfection as seem in another shop nearby. If that is not too important then this would be the place to shop at a fairly decent price.

The shop is known since last 25 years or more for its speciality in wooden craft, brass metal craft of statues lamp etc., apart from traditional items like tanjor paintings toys, some special dress items ..

When I need a cultural or hand crafted item, such as a lamp, woolen shawl, pictures, etc I first stop at Poompuhar. It has a such a wide variety of well-made articles at reasonable prices. However, I have two complaints:
Every item sold there has the price sticker stuck on it with a glue that does not come off even after vigorous rubbing /washing. Any further attempts to remove the glue results in scratches on the article. They should find another way to display the prices without using these stickers!
The service at the store is mediocre. The staff is usually very lethargic and indifferent to customers wanting to know more about the items, or to find items they are looking for, etc. Improvement in the diligence and helpfulness of the staff will go a long way to showcase the excellent items on sale at Poompuhar.

This is a very good shop in the central part of Chennai which has got good collection of handi crafts which represents different part of the country. The articles are reasonably priced .You can take a chance during discount sale to buy at a bargain your favorite items

Thank you for the question. Unless poompuhar advertises on the website I would not know. Mind the timings of the shop as they are not open at 0400 or perhaps past midnight.
