This place came highly recommended by relatives in Chennai, and I see why. They have a great collection of curios from all over the country, and the owner is very knowledgable about the origin of each piece. We ended up buying a bunch of things but wished we had more space in our luggage to carry back with us!

With a few hours left before flying out, I was looking for a shop where I could purchase some unique Indian gift items. Cane and Bamboo fit the bill perfectly. They have a large array of quality items at many different price levels. I found everything I needed in a one place. The owners and staff are friendly and accommodating. I was able to spend time looking around without any pressure to buy and the prices are quite reasonable. Highly recommended. I’m sure I’ll stop back on my next trip.

This is my 3rd visit to this store in past few years. Always have enjoyed walking around and picking up unique gift items which totally reflect the heart and soul of India. There are a lot of handcrafted items in silk, cotton, beads. They also support the NGOs which help the handicapped artisans to find an avenue to market their work. Some of the items I bought include beautiful embroidery wall hangings, phone purses, glass cases, ipad sleeve/bags done by artisans of Shrujan. They also have unique ties. Always can find small gifts for anyone.

Cane and Bamboo is a small shop in a residential part of the city. Its collection is good, with presents to suit all budgets. The staff are generally helpful. But the owner/managers are incredibly rude, at least to some customers. (I see another reviewer has had a similar experience). They follow customers around suspiciously, telling them to be careful in patronising tone when they pick up any goods, however gently, to examine.
I heard the owner/manager tell another customer multiple times that a particular item was 'very expensive' and discouraged her from looking at it, even though she was interested. (Perhaps he was prejudiced and decided that she did not look privileged enough to afford it?)
If you are short on time and looking for a small and accessible collection, and you can brace yourself for some rude obnoxious behaviour (especially if you are not a visibly wealthy privileged tourist), visit this shop.

I have been shopping at Cane & Bamboo for the last twenty years at both the current and the previous location. Current shop is spacious and beautifully arranged. I travel to Chennai once a year and take care of all the birthday, Christmas, etc.gift shopping at Cane & Bamboo. I am already looking forward to my next visit! The Philips are warm and lovely people and the shopping experience is never hectic or rushed. The best hidden gem in Chennai!

I have been known Cane and bamboo for more than 15 years now! Have bought quite a lot of gifts for friends and family from the store. It first started with birthday gifts for school friends and now it's wedding gifts for the same friends or gifts for their new borns :) now even my husband and my in laws love the collection. The owners are are friendly and very well-spoken. Never have I come out of the store disappointed with what I found. The place is well maintained and an absolute delight. It's location ensures that it has a good crowd too and not bargain hunters.

I walked in with a lot of enthusiasm and eagerness as this place was recommended by my froends. Nay....collection is basic, prices are bit more than other competitor's. Worst of all is the owner/manager' attitude. He got irate when I was exploring and looking at collection closely. I am supposed to know what I was going to buy, as if it was some sort of grocery store...lol. There are two excellent ones on Mount road, with better collection, wonderful, and polite service. Poompuhar, state owned and the another one at the other end of Mount road, Indian handicrafts. Both have superb collections, competitively priced, and very polite service than Cane and Bamboo.

A lovely little shop hidden from the high street. There are abundance of lovely authentic Indian objects that would make a perfect gift to take back home!

I always go here first to buy souvenirs for friends at home, because the prices are reasonable, and the variety is incredible. You can find almost everything here! The owners are very friendly and helpful.
