The place has a factory and canteen. The staff at souvenir shop are helpful, but stuff is little expensive compared to market.

If you decide to purchase a rug, or a scarf or whatever beware if the following:
The price shown on the item is in Indian Rupees. If you take the rug with you, that’s the price you pay ( so I’m told), but If you require postage, that’s a different matter.
They don’t tell you that on the “ pink coloured” receipt provided to you, the amounts are not in Rupees but in US Dollars (although “US$ “ is in the small print you just assume you are dealing in Indian rupees) and suddenly changing to deal in US$ when you are in India and when you had been dealing in rupees is not an immediate connection.
Additionally, another thing they don’t tell you is that they charge you US$25 per square foot of rug as Indian government tax. We were initially told it would be “ a gift” to avoid tax. We were told postage to Australia was Rs670 ( around $12 Australian).
We purchased a rug which was 3 x 6 ft. The price on the rug was Rs1860 - approximately AU$325 plus $12 postage. (So we thought we were spending around AU$337.00). BTW The internet price, we learned later was approximately Rs1200 for the same rug.
Our credit card debit showed just over AU$1,000.
We returned to the Tibetan refugee place following morning to inquire about the discrepancy. We were then told about the US$205 postage plus US$450 for Indian Government tax ( whether this is a true tax or not we cannot verify).
So a $337 rug turned into $1000 rug. Just providing WARNING to anyone who thinks they are doing a noble thing helping the Tibetan refugees. I think they are actually very shrewd so be alert.

I bought a rug from these guys back in November (after what was a great visit) and arranged for it to be delivered back to the UK. I was expecting the rug to arrive in March and have not yet received this. I have tried contacting them on multiple telephone numbers, email addresses and facebook. On facebook my private message are marked as 'read' but I never receive a message back. I would be very wary about purchasing a rug from them. If someone from the centre reads this please do get in touch with me about my order and its shipping details so I can look to track it.

It is a nice place where you can feel the history. Do not miss to climb the staircases at the rear end of the place. You will find a surprise there.

In one way, it is sad that the residents are all of advanced age and their skills are likely to die out with them. On the other hand, it is testament to the endeavours of this generation that their children and grandchildren have been educated and assimilated into the society to which they fled to escape Chinese oppression. The cottage industries of the Tibetan people including spinning, weaving and carpentry are on show here and it is a delight to watch these people in action.

Life in exile must be hard for the Tibetan refugees. This centre demonstrates the resilience of the refugees and the efforts to preserve their handicrafts. A small shop sells some of these crafts.

Visiting the Tibetan Refugee Self help centre is a unique experience. It gives us a flashback of the history regarding the Tibetan crisis during the 60's.
Reflects the hardwork & self respect of the Tibetans. Also, captures the relationship with Dalai Lama & Tibet from the times in the 70's. All the framed pics are nostalgic.
Good place to purchase woollen carpets - quality and amazing varieties.
Must visit place esp. if you are a history lover.

A visited this place strictly to buy a thangka as souvenir. However the life and conditions of helpless Tibetan refuges made me commit a little more budget for them. They great every customer coming to their centres of carpet weaving and so on. You can see the gratitude in their faces and best way to buy cheaper items from their shop in the center. Otherwise products in market of chaurastha are expensive.
