Earliest and Largest Museum

it was founded in 1814 and is one of the earliest and the largest multipurpose museums not only in the Indian subcontinent but also in the Asia-Pacific region of the world. It is the situation in the middle of the Park Street. It has many departments and has a rare collection of fossils, coins, skeletons, ornaments, antiques, historical paintings etc. The architecture is quite impressive.
It is a very well-maintained museum and you need almost half a day to explore the whole museum if you are a museum person. Some departments do not allow photography or videography. No need to buy tickets in advance. The ticket price is 75.
Washroom is available and there is a cafeteria also inside.

Lots of interesting pieces but the condition of the museum could be improved

I imagine that this museum was incredible when it was first opened. However, it feels like it it needs to be kept in better condition and have some newer displays

Oltre al fatto del prezzo non equo tra stranieri e locali la cosa peggiore è questo museo abbandonato, molte sale chiuse , altre insignificanti, guano di piccione ovunque

Great collections but in lousy condition

What should I say, I am a museum buff and love to see their collections, and for this reason this place is awesome. Their collection of fossils, art, archaeology and coins are excellent. That's where it ends!!! The place is very run down and the artifacts are not even displayed very well with descriptions. The biggest problem is the lack of air conditioning in a museum of this scale and importance. The entry and building look great from a distance but as u get closer to see the issues, the paint is falling apart, the giant stairs are breaking apart or almost black from soot and dirt over the years. Frankly, this requires investment from the govt or bodies to bring it up to speed with the rest of the world's museums. Its collection can rival the Smithsonian but the apathy and mismanagement is very bad and stark. It can easily become a top attraction in Kolkata but does not want to, they need to increase the measly entry charges and help to build up the place, install ACs , clean it up, paint the place , have better food options, etc.

Must visit place for everyone

It was a wonderful experience. Must visit place in Kolkatta. The entry ticket is affordable price for everyone. They charge 59 for mobile camera. It took around 3 hours for complete visit.

Lots of good displays although parts of the building need repair & better maintenance

Pretty good museum with quite a lot of displays, especially of Indian history & art, archaeology, money history, Natural artefacts which include botany, zoology and geology, and even Egyptian History in display. I especially loved the historical artefacts which were from the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya alongside the natural artefacts in the museum, not to mention the prices weren't that expensive (although it is more expensive if you're a foreign tourist), the open green space outside in the centre of the museum looked nice and relatively well maintained, and its location is pretty good lying beside the main road and also lying within walking distance of Kolkata Metro's Line 1. My only issues with this museum is that while the building looks beautiful & historic (with its colonial-era architecture), parts of the building, especially near the main entrance & staircases close to it (the other areas looked cleaner & better maintained), are in a poor state of repair and could do with better maintenance given the museum's age (I believe it is the oldest museum in both India & Asia and one of the oldest museums in the world) and the other issue I had was that there didn't seem to be a cafe/restaurant inside the building given its large size (unless I missed it) but apart from those minor issues, I enjoyed my visit there.

Best Indian Museum

It's one of the best museums in India that I have seen, some of the fossils are not available in any other museum in India.
There is also a Egyptian Mummy at this museum.

Relive India's History and Culture in One Place

India is known for its old civilizations and their cultures.
Sanskrit is the earliest language that has ever been recorded in India; according to many experts, the Vedas (6500–1500 B.C.) were written in this ancient and classical language.
From around 400–300 B.C., many kingdoms, like the Maurya Empire, Shunga Empire, Gupta Empire, and many more, came and ruled over India's different parts and left their cultures all over the country.
That's why I always have a love and affection for Indian history and culture and am eager to know them in detail, so this December I visited the Indian Museum in Kolkata, the biggest and oldest museum in Asia.
The museum is filled with lots of astonishing and eye-catching sculptures. On three floors, there are approximately 35 galleries.
It has almost every historical and cultural detail about India that anyone would want to know. Starting with Hindu Gods, Indian kings and their cultures, different rulers who conquered this country at some point in their lives, and various sculptures and discoveries from various eras of Indian history, there is something for everyone.
If you have a desire to know about the historical aspects and cultural values of India, I suggest you visit the Indian Museum in Kolkata at least once in your lifetime; you will not regret it.

A Astonishing Experience

While visiting the Indian Museum in Kolkata,

Throughout my childhood, I had the impression that museums were stuffy and dreary, and that bored children from school trips went there. However, I credit Kolkata for changing my perception.

From the outside, the magnificent white pillars standing tall appear massive and spectacular. As I enter the museum, I notice that it has three floors and 35 galleries. Each floor has a minimum of 1000 years of history. Art, Archaeology, Anthropology, Geology, Zoology, and Botany are said to be the six major sections.

The Indian Museum has everything from Egyptian artifacts to Buddhist relics and stores carvings from southern India. It has a Zoological Garden with very unique well-preserved specimens of animal species that are more than 100 years old, which astounded me. Every floor introduces us to a new era in history. There is something for everyone. The fascinating artifacts and relics left me speechless. If you want to go back in time and relive history from prehistoric to modern times. Then visit the Indian Museum.

Music of Satyajit Ray
I went with m y student, Anindya Datta,to see a programme 'Music he Lived by :Music of Satyajit Ray on 31st August, 2022.The programme was a mix of audio visual presentations along with live music by an orchestra We learned about Satyajit Ray's love for western music, especially his admiration for Beethoven, the noted German composer. He also loved Rabindranath Tagore, who he regarded as the best composer in the world. Apart from western classical music, the band played Satyajit Ray's compositions
