Surprisingly moving and spiritual place. Winding wall with nooks and benches that goes on for quite a distance. Even on a gray, rain-threatening day it was very atmospheric. A beautiful tribute.

We were not allowed in because we had our 9 pound papilion, Minnie, with us. We had not seen any restrictions on the internet before we made the trip all the way from Chattanooga, TN. We will not leave Minnie in the car even with the windows open. A very nasty women at the gate said that even if she was a service dog she would not be allowed in. She said that it would be very rude for someone to try to bring a service dog in. I was thinking how very sad with that attitude just miles from Helen Keller's birthplace.
When we were leaving another nasty lady yelled at a man wlking up to the entrance because he had parked his car on the wrong side of the street. They made him go back and move his car. There was not a no parking sign on tne street.

Absolutely amazing place. I could wax poetic about how meaningful and awe-inspiring it is, but I believe one would be best off reading the story behind the place on the website for it, as well as reading Tom’s book about his great-great grandmother, for whom this wall was built (I still haven’t but can’t wait to grab a copy!) and then seeing it for yourself. Seeing the result of this beautiful project brought upon by the passion for his history and ancestors and selflessly allowing anyone and everyone to come see it daily is astounding.

I’d be remiss to not mention, however, the lady that lives at the house RIGHT next to the monument, practically right there among it all, was very rude, and unfortunately started off the experience on a sour note.

We get there, we see a group ahead of us, and by the time we get started to start walking along the wall, I no longer see them, so I assume that they went down the path past the house, because I felt that they disappeared out of my field of vision too quickly to have gone around the corner after the first long stretch of the wall to your right that’s there when you first start, going around the house would have gotten them out of sight quicker, so simply put: I just thought they went that way!

So, assuming they did, plus there being only two chairs sitting a little but past the entrance and from where the wall starts, I think, “ah cool, I guess down this way is part of the whole grounds that one can also visit, and these chairs must be where the owners sit and greet people, I guess they’re just in the house right now.”

I also assume this because the owner of a nearby restaurant encouraged me to call Tom before going just to double-check that he’d be there that day. Little did he or I know, Tom had already passed a few years back (may he rest in peace), which is something I learned from a visitor of the grounds later in our visit.

So with those assumptions in mind, we walk a little bit past the chairs, and the lady that lives in the house directly next to the monument comes out and yells “can I help you???” To which I simply respond: “we’re here to see the rock wall.” She then said “this is private property, you need to go that way” very rudely, to which I respond “it made sense to me that this was part of it” in reference to the path that goes along side her house, while she rudely turned her back to me and slammed her door behind her, which was just a really disappointing start to seeing a beautiful homage to an incredible indigenous woman, while I’m there with my 7-month pregnant indigenous wife and two daughters, who of course were excited to see something not only beautiful and inspiring, but something that they could also connect with on a deeply personal level.

Apparently, those two chairs were supposed to send the message that THAT was the point that one must not cross. I will admit, on our way back around, I noticed a “private drive” sign/plaque, like the kind you can buy from Lowe’s or wherever, nearby along where the path starts, but I figured this didn’t really entail that one ought to stay clear of that path during the hours that this place is open to the public.

If this reaches anyone in Tom’s family, or even if the lady living there is someone in Tom’s family, let’s get in touch, I will gladly come back and help the lady living there build a nice retractable gate (retractable so you can still easily pull your car in and out) in that exact spot where the chairs were so it’s perfectly clear for everyone that one better not step too close in the wrong direction.

It’s really disappointing that a place made with such care, love, hard work, and passion, has a presence among it that is that hateful. I understand, everyone wants their peace, and I respect that (and I reiterate, I will even come help you build a gate or whatever you’d like to aid in keeping you comfortable!) but don’t yell at me and my family for making a harmless mistake at a place that’s meant for reflection and a chance to take in the fruits of the labor of an exceptional person who decided to dedicate so much of his time and health to creating something like this.

You live not just next to the monument, your house is so close that it is practically a part of it, so you are the ONE person who is uniquely at a spot to set the tone of a visitor’s experience, and you set a really ugly one. If you don’t want people to walk along that path again, I implore you, get in touch with me, I’ll help put together a team and we’ll get you a nice retractable gate there so there won’t be any more confusion.

I had read Tom Hendrix book about Tay-lah-nays journey before visiting. Did a bit of research about the building of the wall by Tom. But was unexpectedly moved and completely awed by the beauty and peace I experienced and the love and the commitment by Tom. Absolutely a must see

On County Rd 8, about 10 miles north of Florence and just off of the Natchez Trace, is a remarkable tribute to an amazing feat. Nothing big or flashy, just a low dry stone wall (ie no mortar) that runs for over a mile and was made by one man to honor his great, great grandmother's return home after being forced to travel the "Trail of Tears".

Definitely worth the detour!

The entrance is a private driveway so do not park there but rather across the road.

We did not realize entrance to the wall would be closed since it is an outdoor spot but did enjoy looking at it from the road!

The story behind the wall makes seeing it even more impressive. I recommend this as a must see stop on the Natchez Trace. There not much to do other than walk the wall and parking is a little weird. Otherwise, it's a nice stop.

What an awesome place to visit. After reading about it had to venture out to it and witness it. Completely worth the trip. And doing it on a weekend his son told the story about it and brought it to life for us and made the experience even more memorable

To see this tribute in honor of Tom's great-great grandmother was an honor to behold. After researching why this wall was built, I knew this was something I had to see. Everyone who has visited the wall heard Mr. Hendrix say that building the wall "wore out three trucks, 22 wheelbarrows, 3,800 pairs of gloves, three dogs and one old man". But, he enjoyed every minute of it. Especially the last several years when visitors came by every day - I think he enjoyed telling his great-great grandmother's story even more than actually building the wall. Tom Hendrix built a stone wall for over 30 years in memory of his great-great-grandmother's journey. His great-great-grandmother Te-lah-nay was part of the Yuchi Indian tribe that lived near there along the Tennessee River in the 1800s. Her tribe called the Tennessee River the Singing River because they believed a woman who lived in the river sang to them. When Te-lah-nay arrived in Oklahoma she said the streams and rivers did not sing to her and she longed for home.
