My son preferred this course when visiting the area. He made special trips to the area because of this course He liked the small clubhouse and folks he met their. We understand the Course is now closed.....sad news, indeed.

We drove over from Mobile, AL to play this course one last time before they permanently close on December 2nd. This was a great state park course that is an easy walk. Competition, hurricanes and I’m sure politics have had a hand in the decrease in funding for this course. We enjoyed our final 18 holes here and hope the State of Alabama makes good use of this prime property.

This is a well laid out golf course; we've been golfing here for 25 years. But, every year the condition of the course gets worse. There is virtually no grass on the fairways, the greens are abysmal, and there are fallen limbs everywhere. I have read the responses on this site from management saying there is no $ from the state to maintain the course. Well, what a shame. There seems to be plenty of money to build miles and miles of trails (which are wonderful), a new hotel/conference center and fancy beach pavillions. Shame on the fellows in Montgomery for not maintaining this jewel of a golf course. The fees are low, yes; but not that much lower than several other courses in the area that are much better.

The golf course upkeep and maintenance is covered under an operating budget from the Alabama State Parks division, whereas the lodge and trails are being constructed by funds from other sources. We do hope you continue to visit the golf course and witness the changes being made.

Called the course early this morning to see if we needed a tee time, was told no to come on so we went to pro shop to check in a was charged the normal senior price. At no time during these two opportunities did anyone tell us that the greens were in bad condition due to top dressing with sand. Had we wanted to play in sand for 4 hours we would have gone to the beach. Do not appreciate the not telling us about conditions and at least a discount because of conditions.

I have played this course 3 or 4 times in the past couple of years. It was always in decent condition and a very good value for a public course. I approached it this year with that in mind only to be thoroughly disappointed. The employees were very nice. However, nice employees cannot compensate for terrible course conditions. For all practical purposes, there were no fairways. I am not sure if they were lost due to a disease, fungus, weather or a combination of all three, but the entire course should have been labeled "Ground Under Repair". The greens were in acceptable condition but unmowed and very slow. I had planned to play here twice during the weekend, bringing others to join us on the next day. By the 3 hole I called and made reservations at another course.

The Refuge is a nice family course. It has a decent number of challenges with some left and right doglegs. Greens where shaggy so ball did not roll much.
Price was average for 18 holes with cart. They did not charge for riders only. There is a restaurant at the clubhouse that makes quick food for you at the turn.
Overall not fancy but a good fit for those who just want to get out and play golf.

The ground crew was running a drag up and down the fairways in front of us for 3 holes in a row and would not move. We asked them what the deal was and they said management makes them do that. I actually hit one of them with a drive. The greens were as long as the fairways. The fairways were very weedy and full of bare areas. The cart paths were busted up. It gets worse each year. I won't go back.

My brother-in-law and I went here to golf on a beautiful day. Front nine the course was packed. Marshall kept everything moving. Back nine, no Marshall. There were only 8 people left on the course. Foursome in front of us. One behind us and one on front nine. We waited every shot on the back nine, score cards say let groups play through. Did not happen, I repeat did not happen. Ruined a beautiful day.

Just finished a horribly kept golf course in Aruba. It was relatively cheap but decent greens. Gulf State being a State Park and being located in AL, it's light years better, but definitely needs major improvements. Right now they are working on the nature walking paths.
Overall it has lots of potential and needs major improvements, but considering that state officials golf down the road at the best golf clubs, knowing AL, it won't happen.
BTL nice for a quick nine, greens are decent, walk if you can.

Was not aware that this golf course was in Gulf Shores. It is a nice 18 hole course. Don't expect Kiva Dunes, pretty sure it is State maintained so they probably have to survive on limited funds. But, it was fun to play. Nice little snack bar too.

Is the dress code the normal soft spikes, golf shirt and no denim shorts or something more stringent?

We have a pretty relaxed dress code at Refuge Golf Course. You do not have to wear a collared shirt but no sleeveless. Denim is allowed. No swim wear.
