South East Asian style mosque
feb. 2020
The Kampung Hulu Mosque is a mosque at the northern end of the Heritage City of Malacca. It’s the oldest mosque in Malacca, but I would never have guessed that’s what it was from the architectural style of the building. The architecture is very much south-east Asian and even the free standing minaret owes more to Asian influences than Arab or even Indo-Islamic styles most prevalent for mosques. Even the minbar shows clear SE Asia influence predominating.

Most a must-see, but interesting for the unusual design for a mosque.

feb. 2019

Architecture Unique
sep. 2019

Oldest mosque with interesting symbol of harmony architecture
jul. 2019
Kampung Kling Mosque or Masjid Kampung Kling is one of the oldest mosques located at Jalan Tokang Emas, also known as Harmony Street. Harmony Street portrays a sense of harmony between the major races in Malaysia and temples of different religions. Within walking distance travellers will find two very old temples Sri Poyatha Moorthi Temple and Cheng Hoon Teng Temple, respectively for Hindu and Chinese population. Besides there is a fairly new Budhdhist temple name Xiang Lin Si Temple on the same vicinity and just opposite to the Cheng Hoon Teng Temple. Documents says that the mosques was built around 1748 by Indian Muslim traders.

I was a bit surprised to see a non-traditional architecture of the mosque. It doesn’t look like a typical mosque. Documents says that its design is a cross between Chinese, Sumatran, Hindu, and Maly influences. The minaret is separate from the main building and also color is different. While the main mosque is red and green, the minaret is distinctively white and beautiful.
