Shame. Rude, unpleasant staff, the girl from customs, patting me in a rather questionable way for security, burped on me.
And to think that I rode on my great horses when they took pictures of cultures or ethnicities. Be careful not to make a generality all the same, but in 6 hours of stopover, the twenty people I met (reception, flight attendants, customs, waiters and salesmen) are odious, dirty (they spit!) and racist.
I apologized so many times and sketched smiles hoping for an answer or at least a softening of their behavior, but nothing, on the contrary. The more I submitted, the more odious they were.
To flee, you shame China! You are supposed to be the showcase for us foreigners who arrive in this first place... I hope they are not representative of the people...

Nous allions voir la famille de ma femme aux Philippines et nous avons fait escale à Shanghai. Notre fille de 2 ans avait de la fièvre et toussait. Nous avons passé 3 heures à remplir les formalités. D'abord scan des 5 doigts 3 fois de suite... y compris pour ma fille.. ensuite on nous donne une feuille avec les 17 étapes à suivre pour pouvoir embarquer sur notre vol pour les Philippines !!! incroyable. Finalement nous arrivons dans la dernière queue avant l'embarcation. Je dois porter ma fille en permanence car j'ai demandé à être prioritaire mais contrairement à tous les aéroports du monde qui laisse les parents avec bébé ou femmes enceintes passer prioritairement cela a été refusé. La queue dure un heure au moins et ma fille est exténuée car elle n'a pas dormi depuis une vingtaine d'heure et est malade. Je la porte car il n'y a pas de chaise. Pas de wifi et il est interdit de sortir son téléphone. Finalement on passe et le dernier contrôleur reprend toutes nos empreintes et discute beaucoup car sur le passport de ma fille la photo ne ressemble pas en effet ma fille avait 3 mois quand elle avait eu son passeport pour un voyage précédent. Ensuite il dit que l'oreille de ma femme a changé !! On reste calme mais cela dure et finalement on part les derniers. Ma fille pleure et tousse dans les bras. Je ne mettrai plus jamais les pieds en Chine. Ce sont des ordures déshumanisés

It took me almost 3 hours to get out of this airport.
1. There is no clear sign at finger print collecting area that foreigners only need to do it once in their previous trip to Shanghai. The result is we who have already done the collecting have to walk for an extra long distance just to find out we do not need to do it.
2. The custom counters for foreigners are really slow. The line in front of counters for Chinese citizens are four or even five times longer than ours, but they just disappeared in one blink. In the end, the airport had to let us use the Chinese citizen’s counters.
3. There are actually two “green” exits, but there is no clear arrow sign on the ground or whatsoever. People had to wait in a super long queue, waiting to have their luggage scanned. After almost half an hour, when we almost reached the exit, we realised we can actually go through the other door with almost no queue there.
And yes a couple of shameful queue jumping during this time too.

The worst experience ever! Never to Shanghai again for transit!
Ttansit is not as transit, but nearly as arrival, meaning; through ridgid passport control with scanning eyes, after that through extremely rude and unpleasant security check, then finally to the transit gate.
All personals in the airport have stone faces, rigid voices, rude and extremely unfriendly attitude. I had hard time to supress my frustration and unsatisfied desperation towards yelling and rude security personnel, who yelling at me in Chinese which I don’t understand at all.
I haven’t seen a single friendly personnel in this terrible airport.
China suck!

I took a round trip ticket for my parents vacation to USA from Philippines. There flight going to US is through China Eastern Airlines and United Airlines. A terrible experience for the first timer and oldies. Aside from the immigration hassle, As I booked this flight it was clearly stipulated that the luggage will be picked up in their final destination...but never happened...my parents need to unload all their luggages in every lay over.. and the worst thing happened is when they went home..in the US airport United Airlines told and gave the claim stub labeled cebu and clearly told them that the luggages will be picked up in Cebu City.... but it never happened when they arrived in China, my mom have a doubt with their luggages, so they go down to the luggage area and found their luggage unattended... they wanted to check whats inside and mom has to open it so they can look on the inside.This made me pissed off!!! whoever read this!!!! never ever get a flight that has something to do with Pudong China Airport!!! And the person attending their luggages was so rude and don't speak English!!!!! thinking my parents were oldies!!!!! the treatment is not a good one!!!!! I will never ever booked this flight again!!!!

Okay, I'm only giving 2 stars because they have terrible non english speaking bad customer service skills. Lines are always long whether it is immigrations, customs, transfers or just to get out of the airport. Wifi sucked and chairs are uncomfortable. I regret booking my flight with a layover here. Never again. It is clean and huge and has a bunch of restaurants. That's about it.

A very frustrating and poorly organized airport. Upon arrival it took 30 minutes from a very remote part of the airport to Immigration. (I catch this flight every weekend so I know it is standard). It then took 50 minutes to clear immigration and we still had to wait quite some time for the bags to arrive. After an absurdly long wait for baggage you are met with a huge queue to leave the airport. All bags are scanned again to try and squeeze some extra money in duty for gifts or luxury products they find in suitcases. Sadly they rarely find anything as the security are laughing, play fighting and horsing around rather that looking at the security cameras. Shanghai airport staff have a unique unprofessionalism I have never seen anywhere else.
Departure is a similar debacle, I arrived at the airport with 1 and half hours before my flight. (10.50 as the flight was 12.20) Unfortunately bags are ‘scanned before entering the airport by a similar disinterested and unfocused security person, yawning and dozing and occasionally looking at the screen. ‘Security check 1’ this took 35 minutes just to get into the airport and by the time I went to check in the flight had closed. It’s important to add that check in staff can be rude at best. They found me the worst seat they could on a 1.00 pm flight which gave me 1 and a half hours to reach the gate. The usual chaos that takes place at immigration and security meant that after waiting in line for almost an hour I had to be rushed through security as I was going to miss yet another flight. Expectedly, the gate had been changed without any notice on the main board to the complete opposite side of the airport. Anything this airport can get wrong they will with flying colours. They have the latest infrastructure but it seems when they get a system that is efficient they immediately change it to create complete chaos.
Frankly I am shocked that they don’t feel any shame or embarrassment for delivering a system that could be improved by a 5 year old. I dread using this airport! They have excessive security checks but the sheer lack of serious professionalism across almost all support staff makes you feel unsafe. Still have to say the treatment of passengers is still better than in any US airport I have visited!

There is bottle neck before you can get outside airport . All passengers have to have their luggages went through
x-ray machine . Expect 2 hours between plane arr. and get out of airport. Lots of taxi outside and well
organized.

I only had five hours to kill here, but between the comically bad (and expensive) dining options, no bar whatsoever, crappy and confusing WiFi, uncomfortable seats, and a million other reasons, it seemed like an eternity. Easily the worst large airport I've ever seen in all my travels. It was clean—that's about the best thing I can say about it.
