This is the first visit since 2003. So much difference. Before, they are like many old town in China, very commercial and shops sell same stuff which were boring.
Now, it's clean, many varieties. Not only traditional thing but modern stuff that can blend into the environment. Most important is coffee shop!
Can easily spend 2-3hours there.

We get there by metro 10 and 17. About 1h30 drive. This charming little town has kept all its charm of yesteryear despite the many visitors and the incessant rain all day. Small alleys of small bridges obviously craft shops of many restaurants and 2 nice museums to visit. We really liked this little town of water and the little junk ride. Very nice day and visit. To see.

Zhujiajiao Ancient Town, often called the
"Venice of Shanghai," has a rich history and picturesque canals, but I found it a bit underwhelming compared to my expectations. While the stone bridges, traditional streets, and old architecture offer a glimpse into the past, the overall experience felt more commercialized than authentic.
The temples and shrines were not particularly impressive, and the much-hyped boat ride was short and unremarkable— not something l'd recommend. However, what made the trip enjoyable was having traditional afternoon tea at a historic tea house. The atmosphere was charming, and while the tea itself was good, the real highlight was relaxing with great company.
If you're already in Shanghai and looking for a short escape, Zhujiajiao can be a nice day trip, but temper your expectations. It's not very scenic, not quite as magical as some reviews might suggest.

Excellent half day trip from Shanghai, which can be reached by subway. Town itself is free, but you can buy a 80 rmb ticket to get access to 2 gardens, one small art gallery and 2 temples. At least the gardens are worth visiting. You don’t need boat tour to see everything. Just wander around and enjoy a bit growded narrow street with full of food and souvenir stalls.

It's a long drive, the subway is about 20 stations from downtown. But it's the subway. Admission is free, the tour makes no sense. Lots of shops and charades. You can eat crickets, scalmpendras, worms and other earthly bastards. Cheating

Jiangnan town without admission fee, feel really good, is my mind in the Jiangnan water town look. The degree of commercialisation is not high, prices are normal, come to Shanghai want to experience a water town style, it is worth to come and see.

Taken DiDi from Shanghai Bund area approximately 45 to 55m to reach this ancient city , Things I love was great experience of costume + make up (face & hair) + photograher only cost RMB199 each person . In fact , admission is FOC if you plan to just walk , eat and chill there , can avoid buying tickets . Fruit juice and dumplings is nice . It may be too commercialized as Ancient Town but nearest from Shanghai City Center .

I state that we saw it on a gray day and only during the day, we found it cute but no more than other similar places seen in the country and for us to do it in half a day without staying overnight was not worth as much as it took us to get there. We went by taxi and back by metro, and in both cases we put about 90min..(maybe something more with the metro that in our case required two changes)
Ganzo that in the river spin the gondolas. There are a couple of houses/gardens to visit for a fee.

An hour and 15 minutes from Central Shanghai by metro there is a unique village surrounded by water... A little Venice I can call it!!! When in Shanghai it's a must!!! It is definitely worth 4-5 hours from your time!! Tip: Go by foot and return to Metro Station by Boat! 40 Yuan per person one way.

How easy is it to organise a boat cruise once you arrive at Zhujiajiao Ancient Town. Is as simple as waliking up to one of the operators on the side of the canal? Any info welcomed, thank you.
Skrevet 5. juni 2019
There is a station in one of the bridges where you can line up and pay for the boat. There are payments depending on the number of attractions. Please refer below:
1. CNY 30 for four scenic spots (including Tongtianhe Medicine Shop, Qing Dynasty Post Office, Y-Art Gallery, and Kezhi Garden);
2. CNY 60 for eight scenic spots (including Y-Art Gallery, Tongtianhe Medicine Shop, Qing Dynasty Post Office, City God Temple, Yuanjin Meditation Room, Handwork Exhibition Hall, Quanhua Art Hall and Kezhi Garden);
3. CNY 80 for cruise boat and eight scenic spots mentioned above.

How much is taxi fare from Shanghai center to zhoujiajiao?
Thanks

Skrevet 9. november 2018
I would not take a taxi all the way to zhujiajiao. Public Bus is pretty convenient and fast only at 12RMB one way. Bus stop is in walking distance from Peoples Park or you can take a taxi from that area to bus stop around 30 RMB.
Since bus starts from there, your seat is pretty much guaranteed.
