We made a last minute decision to stop here and we were so glad we did! We weren’t ready to do any serious hikes so the walking path to the frog pond and to the nest were perfect. The path to the nest takes you across the property and a small suspension bridge up a platform where you have such an epic view of the volcano.
You will see birds and other animals around the property and there are several trails. Next time we come back we will do other trails. It was $18 per person to go up to the lodge and do the hikes. I will look into staying there in the future.

Go there only to enjoy the trails. Spent 3 hours and covered about 70% of the trails.
Only one more difficult (the one towards the river) otherwise they are all easy trails.
Well maintained, well indicated and varied.
Interesting to occupy half a day.

My husband and I had booked a morning bird tour here. I had corresponded with them before we left the UK and they were very responsive and helpful. I decided to wait until we got to La Fortuna in case the weather was bad. The night before, I reached out to see if we could still book the tour as it was too late to book online. Anyway, there were spaces so we booked it and they organised a taxi for us.
When we arrived, there was only one other couple in our tour. Our guide, whose name I forget (I have a rubbish memory) was wonderful. There were some serious birders there with extreme zoom lenses, but our guide wasn’t any less enthusiastic to see me with my somewhat small camera! It was dark and raining when we arrived, but this didn’t stop the birds being pointed out from literally the first minute, in bushes right outside the reception area, and I cannot rate him highly enough. After about 2.5 hours, the tour ended, but by then the sun was out and we decided to wander round the beautiful gardens and spot more birds ourselves. The feeders with fruit are a magnet for the birds (and coatis and monkeys) and at one point we were the only ones there.
We spent 4 hours there and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. In our entire trip around various parts of CR, we did 3 other birding tours and this ranked as by far the best value for cost and time. We loved it so much we decided to return a few days later, just buying the entrance fees and roaming the grounds again and watching the birds at all the same spots.
One thing that irritated and disappointed me was a bunch of older teenagers feeding the coatis under the fruit feeder. Totally irresponsible and quite dangerous as one of the girls was scratched (lightly) by them as they (naturally) reached up to take a banana from her. All for that “must have” photo. There are signs saying not to feed the animals of course but apparently it doesn’t apply to these idiots. This is no reflection on AOL, they can’t police the site and a little part of me wanted the coati to take a bite out of her!😂
But that aside, fantastic place and if you enjoy seeing birds, come here! And the guide emails you the list of birds that you spot with him, nobody else did that on any other tour so another big plus.
We were also lucky to get a fantastic view of Arenal once the rain clouds cleared.

I have nothing but great things to say about this place. The entire staff was so incredible, respectful and prioritized my comfort to every detail. My room was amazing with a breathtaking view of Arenal Lake.
The food and experience here was fantastic!
The Service of genesis was very good, smiling and helpful when ordering. You can communicate in English with her.
I highly recommend this nice restaurant. If you're looking to relax and disconnect this is the place for you!!!

2 nights in this beautiful upscale hotel in spacious and ultra comfortable rooms overlooking the volcano!
We recommend hiking in the estate along the trails leading to a waterfall after enjoying a very good breakfast.
The location allows you to go to the zeepline, hot springs and suspension bridges in around twenty minutes.

We did not stay on site, but paid the admission to enjoy the grounds. This place has the best views, trails, and dining in the area. This is the one to do!
Tip- make sure you have a car with some good clearance. Getting here is a rough road!

Where else can you chase Howler Monkeys through the trees at 8am?
I am super late with this review and as I was standing in the kitchen tonight musing over our trip in May, I had to stop and make sure I shined ALL the love at AO&L……
Most people I know have been to Costa Rica and if they were lucky enough to spend any time at Arenal Observatory & Lodge, most only spent a night or two. After reading their website and doing a ton of research, we decided that our group of 8 was going to call the Lodge home for 5 solid nights. Definitely one of the best decisions we’ve ever made! It is truly a slice of heaven with access to all the other wonderful things that La Fortuna and the surrounding area have to offer as well. We went zip-lining, rappelling, to the animal park, to the hanging bridges, made chocolate, went shopping in La Fortuna, and to cap it all off, we went for an evening dip at Eco-Termales Hot Springs. The beauty of AO&L is that you can do full day adventures, 1/2 day adventures, easy excursions, healing excursions, etc but if you can slow down, you need no extra adventures at all. Climb the fire tower and watch sunrise or sunset. The cacophony is magical from up there when the sun starts to come up. Listen for the hoots of the howlers and follow the trails to find them. Truly, you can’t get lost. Love waterfalls? Grab a map and take a walk. Want to see some amazing nightlife? Sign up at the front desk earlier in the day for the walking tour: vipers, toads, frogs, bugs, etc. Just sit on the deck at the lodge and watch all the wonders go by at all hours of the day: agoutis, Montezumas, Great Curaçao, hummingbirds of all shapes and sizes, capuchins, howlers, etc. Or do like we did and get 4 rooms in the Smithsonians facing the volcano and never really need to leave the view other than to eat, get a massage, or swim in the giant pool. My gawd! What a view!
For me, travel is about culture and the space it occupies. How are we the same? How are we different? What makes a culture rich? Why do they know how to live slowly and we East Coast USA’ers all have ants in our pants? How do they cherish their wildlife? Well, in Costa Rica, the culture is PURA VIDA and the staff is of that cloth too. Pure smiles. Pure love of nature. Pure patience, many times. Do not pass go, AO&L is worth every dime.
- The grounds keepers, my word what pride they have in those grounds….
- The front desk staff, you were so helpful….
- The kitchen staff, we enjoyed every meal, every dessert(mostly the chocolate lava cake and sorbet), every drink…
- The drivers, they had all the stories…
- The guides(We love you Dedire!), are unbelievably knowledgeable with such love for the park…
- Massages, facials, and scrubs…the staff is well trained and make every minute in the spa, worth every colones
- AND the “piece de resistance”, the restaurant staff….Uvaldo, you were ever the gentleman. And Pablo! You! My friend, if I could have put you in my luggage, I would have. What a gentle soul with such a bright mind!
We know that the tourist industry is difficult. We have high expectations. Folks complain if they don’t see the wildlife they are looking for. Beds are too hard. Beds are too soft. Maybe the roof had a little leak :)? But you, the very, very patient staff, the people who make Arenal Observatory & Lodge the home away from home that it is…. Congratulations and MANY, Many, thanks from our group. It was truly a blessing to spend so much time in your heaven.

Are you able to request cots for the room? we don't want to spend $$$ on the villas for one night, but we would need two cots for our teenagers- (Logos has those neat ones built into bed)
Skrevet 4. mars 2024
Hi!
Just send them a quick email and ask. They are really responsive. They nay have a family room with bunks or something they can set you up in. There wouldn’t be any room for cots in the Smithsonian rooms. No matter the cost though, you won’t be disappointed. If you can stay around the lodge, you get the treat of all the morning bird, agouti, and primate action. It’s so fascinating!

The free day and night tour ... can you do it daily or once per visit?
Skrevet 12. november 2023
Do they help with luggage to our room? Concerned
Skrevet 12. november 2023
We’re hoping to take a bus from the airport and get to the hotel. Is this possible? Should we try a bus from Liberia to Fortuna and then taxi to the hotel from Fortuna?
Skrevet 4. september 2023
It should be easy to take the bus from Liberia to Fortuna. I suggest that you phone the Arenal Lodge for transportation from Fortuna to the Lodge. The front desk persons speak English well and I am pretty sure the Lodge has transportation available from Fortuna. You wouldn't want hike from the public road up to the Lodge.
