Extreme whether here. There are more beautiful mountains in Alaska, but a welcome change from tundra and stretches of wasteland along the Dalton highway. Really an interesting drive.

A friend and I drove a uhaul van all the way from fairbanks to Deadhorse last August. The weather was incredible. Everything about that drive was just spectacular. Im from Texas and we have alot of chug holes in old Texas roads. We didnt come upon anything worse than those. I guess one person's chug hole is anothers crater. At coldfoot I think they charge to much for an overnight stay. 200+. Im going back for that hamburger though cuz they do have a great hamburger. Great enough to drive to the artic for it! Atigun pass and the brooks range..You'll know for sure there is a God once you see this awe inspiring country. Driving past there at night to Dead horse. Ive never been to another planet but it was very eerie and strange. Totally beautiful though. You only need a good uhaul van. Enough gas and a good friend and a giant sense of adventure to make this trip. Itll change your life.

Took a December tour from Coldfoot to just past Atigun Pass. The expansive snow-covered landscape was absolutely beautiful. Our guide, Tim, was very knowledgeable.

What a great adventure. We drove on the Dalton over Atigun Pass through the Brooks mountains and was glad we had the chance to do it. It was an additional trip when we visited the Arctic circle and Coldfoot. 5 star all the way.

We had a chance to see the Brooks Range from the air while on a flight from Fairbanks to Utqiaġvik (Barrow). Most visitors don't get a chance to see the Brooks Range, but it is every bit as spectacular as the Alaska and Chugach Ranges to the south. Beautiful mountains!

This is all part of the Dalton Highway Experience. You will drive thru the Brooks Range along the way. When I started planning this, I was excited that my family agreed to take the 3 days to get to Prudhoe Bay and back to Fairbanks and the added cost of the rental that allows you to go on the haul road. Because we went on the Haul Road we got to see Wolves, Arctic Foxes, Snowshoe Hares, Ptarmigan (down south they were brown, but towards Prudhoe Bay they were still white), Muskoxen, Grizzly Bears and Caribou. We also got to see great scenery – the Brooks Mountain Range covered in snow, arctic tundra, boreal forest, etc. There was a rain storm that passed through, and we saw several rainbows which wasn’t expected.

Didn't get that far but viewed the Brooks range from the Dalton Highway en route to the Arctic Circle.

While visiting Coldfoot, Ak, to see the aurora, we took a tour to see Atigan Pass/Brooks Range. It is a very beautiful area, to say the least! Of course the road follows the Alaskan oil pipeline, and it adds interest to lots of photo ops. The road is well maintained in the winter. This is due to the many large trucks required to maintain the oil fields. The tour driver adds quite a bit of narratives/information on sights along the route. The only drawback, and it is MAJOR, is the windows in the tour van. They become frosted over very quickly, and are completely useless! The fellow travelers with us just slept during most of the tour, due to this. I used a 'Hot Hands' hand warmer to keep a peep hole, to be able to see the passing wonderland! If I ever go again in the winter, I will drive a rented vehicle, from Fairbanks. There were so many times I wanted to stop to take photos, it is truly a winter wonderland. On clear nights, the Aurora is amazing! You are not supposed to stop on the 'Haul Road' due to the truckers. But there are places along where you can pull over safely. Plan to stay 4-5 nights, to have the best chance of seeing the aurora. Avoid the Chinese New Year! It is quite busy then.

Brooks Range has a bit of everything but it is a long ways from anywhere to enjoy it. If you are Sunday driver then don't waste your time, there is much more to see in Alaska, but if you're an adventurer looking to get lost in the wilderness, go for it.

Hi and don't really know as my visit was in May and not the time of year to be searching and obeserving the Northern Lights. Sorry I can't help hoping others can help you from the TripAdvisor community. May I kindly suggest that you contact such organisations as the Alaska Visitors Bureau and perhaps Alaska Tour and Travel with your question as they may be able to help you.
Hope you enjoy Alaska as much as I did.
Best wishes
Rhys
